    Hydraulic jumps: Turbulence and air bubble entrainment

    A free-surface flow can change from a supercritical to subcritical flow with a strong dissipative phenomenon called a hydraulic jump. Herein the progress and development in turbulent hydraulic jumps are reviewed with a focus on hydraulic jumps operating at large Reynolds numbers typically encountered in natural streams and hydraulic structures. The key features of the turbulent hydraulic jumps are the highly turbulent flow motion associated with some intense air bubble entrainment at the jump toe. The state-of-the-art on the topic is discussed based upon recent theoretical analyses and physical data

    Multi-objective Optimization of Zero Propellant Spacecraft Attitude Maneuvers

    The zero propellant maneuver (ZPM) is an advanced space station, large angle attitude maneuver technique, using only control momentum gyroscopes (CMGs). Path planning is the key to success, and this paper studies the associated multi-objective optimization problem. Three types of maneuver optimal control problem are formulated: (i) momentum-optimal, (ii) time-optimal, and (iii) energy-optimal. A sensitivity analysis approach is used to study the Pareto optimal front and allows the tradeoffs between the performance indices to be investigated. For example, it is proved that the minimum peak momentum decreases as the maneuver time increases, and the minimum maneuver energy decreases if a larger momentum is available from the CMGs. The analysis is verified and complemented by the numerical computations. Among the three types of ZPM paths, the momentum-optimal solution and the time-optimal solution generally possess the same structure, and they are singular. The energy-optimal solution saves significant energy, while generally maintaining a smooth control profile. © 2014 Springer Science+Business Media New York

    Optimal control of impulsive switched systems with minimum subsystem durations

    This paper presents a new computational approach for solving optimal control problems governed by impulsive switched systems. Such systems consist of multiple subsystems operating in succession, with possible instantaneous state jumps occurring when the system switches from one subsystem to another. The control variables are the subsystem durations and a set of system parameters influencing the state jumps. In contrast with most other papers on the control of impulsive switched systems, we do not require every potential subsystem to be active during the time horizon (it may be optimal to delete certain subsystems, especially when the optimal number of switches is unknown). However, any active subsystem must be active for a minimum non-negligible duration of time. This restriction leads to a disjoint feasible region for the subsystem durations. The problem of choosing the subsystem durations and the system parameters to minimize a given cost function is a non-standard optimal control problem that cannot be solved using conventional techniques. By combining a time-scaling transformation and an exact penalty method, we develop a computational algorithm for solving this problem. We then demonstrate the effectiveness of this algorithm by considering a numerical example on the optimization of shrimp harvesting operations

    The control parameterization method for nonlinear optimal control: A survey

    The control parameterization method is a popular numerical technique for solving optimal control problems. The main idea of control parameterization is to discretize the control space by approximating the control function by a linear combination of basis functions. Under this approximation scheme, the optimal control problem is reduced to an approximate nonlinear optimization problem with a finite number of decision variables. This approximate problem can then be solved using nonlinear programming techniques. The aim of this paper is to introduce the fundamentals of the control parameterization method and survey its various applications to non-standard optimal control problems. Topics discussed include gradient computation, numerical convergence, variable switching times, and methods for handling state constraints. We conclude the paper with some suggestions for future research

    The Sparrow Question: Social and Scientific Accord in Britain, 1850-1900.

    During the latter-half of the nineteenth century, the utility of the house sparrow (Passer domesticus) to humankind was a contentious topic. In Britain, numerous actors from various backgrounds including natural history, acclimatisation, agriculture and economic ornithology converged on the bird, as contemporaries sought to calculate its economic cost and benefit to growers. Periodicals and newspapers provided an accessible and anonymous means of expression, through which the debate raged for over 50 years. By the end of the century, sparrows had been cast as detrimental to agriculture. Yet consensus was not achieved through new scientific methods, instruments, or changes in practice. This study instead argues that the rise and fall of scientific disciplines and movements paved the way for consensus on "the sparrow question." The decline of natural history and acclimatisation stifled a raging debate, while the rising science of economic ornithology sought to align itself with agricultural interests: the latter overwhelmingly hostile to sparrows

    Pleomorphic liposarcoma of bone: a rare primary malignant bone tumour

    Abstract Background Liposarcoma is an extremely rare primary bone sarcoma. Case presentation We report a case of primary pleomorphic liposarcoma that arose in an 18 year old male in the metaphysis of the left tibia. Plain radiographs showed a partly sclerotic lesion and MR imaging a heterogeneous tumour predominantly isointense on T1- and high-signal on T2-weighted sequences with focal areas of increased T1 signal that suppressed with fat saturation. PET/CT showed marked FDG uptake (SUV = 17.1) in the primary tumour as well as a metastasis in the right distal femur and multiple small pulmonary metastases. Histologically, the tumour was a pleomorphic liposarcoma containing large tumour cells with vacuolated cytoplasm and hyperchromatic pleomorphic nuclei as well as numerous lipoblasts and scattered brown fat-like cells. Tumour cells strongly expressed FABP4/aP2, a marker of adipocyte differentiation, and UCP1, a marker of brown fat, but not S100. The case was treated with neoadjuvant MAP chemotherapy, resulting in extensive (> 95%) necrosis in the primary tumour and almost complete resolution of the femoral and pulmonary metastases. Conclusions Pleomorphic liposarcoma can present as a sclerotic primary malignant bone tumour; markers of adipose differentiation are useful in histological diagnosis and neoadjuvant MAP chemotherapy results in significant tumor necrosis
