Publisher's version (útgefin grein)The conventional magnetic proximity effect and double-proximity effects were studied in a set of fully coherent high-quality Fe/Fe0.32V0.68 superlattices. Applying a simple model to the saturation magnetization, it is seen that the magnetic proximity effect is gigantic in magnitude in the alloy—the magnetization is enhanced by 20–450 % and the ordering temperature is enhanced by a factor of 2. The magnitude of the effect can be explained by the large susceptibility of the alloy above its intrinsic ordering temperature. Additionally, a strong dependence of the ordering temperature of single monolayers of Fe on the interlayer distance is observed. The results give insight into new ways of using alloying and large magnetic susceptibility combined with magnetic proximity effects to enhance the functionality of materials that are of interest for spintronic devices.F.M. acknowledges funding from the Icelandic Centrefor Research (Grant No. 174271-051). Forward-Looking Sustainability Agency for Developing Future Cruise Ships

The study addressed sharing of futures insights as a component of sustainability agency for long-term company enhancement in an interorganizational shipbuilders’ network. The purpose was to analyze social structures under “agency” terminology. This joint sustainability project involved a partnership of firms, academia, and nongovernmental organization (NGO) actors in collaborative cruise ship building. The study adapted a mixed method approach where social network analysis (SNA) was enriched with other contextual data to make network data more applicable and accessible. The results revealed a loose and thin network structure, with relatively high trust among network actors. The network’s social structure was found to facilitate insight sharing. Lead firm actors clearly played a central role in enhancing sustainability, and the researchers, as well as industrial association actors, made a significant contribution to insight sharing and transmission. The findings suggest that the case network would benefit from an open and balanced social structure that incorporates a number of insight brokers to enhance forward-looking sustainability agency (F-L SA). Futures insight sharing enhances agency in the context of joint sustainability actions and improves capacity to respond to systemic challenges. Understanding how proactive agency can be promoted in network settings strengthens strategic aspects of managerial practice and contributes to discourse around sustainability agency</p

Rhetorical-Performative Analysis of the Urban Symbolic Landscape : Populism in Action

    Get PDF
This chapter introduces a rhetorical-performative analysis as a tool for exploring urban symbolic landscape and populism and hence deals with relationality and materiality from the postfoundational perspective. It connects the articulation theory of cultural theorists Stuart Hall or political theorists Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe and spatial analysis of cultural geographer Doreen Massey to the study of populism. The case of Hungary shows how political frontiers have been articulated in the public space, contestable interpretations of the past are deliberately used and key symbolic urban landscapes transformed radically to articulate a political ‘us’—and ‘them.’ In the 2010s, in the Hungarian capital Budapest, the top-down process transforming urban space faced bottom-up movements which reproduce the populist logic of articulation.Peer reviewe

Giant magnetic proximity effect in amorphous layered magnets

Publisher's version (útgefin grein)Here we study the magnetic proximity effect in amorphous layered magnets of alternating high- and low-Tc materials using magnetometry and polarized neutron reflectivity. By altering the thickness of either the high- or low-Tc layer we are able to extract the induced magnetic moment in the low-Tc layer directly and study how it scales with thickness. We observe that the ordering temperature of the low-Tc layer is enhanced and above which a second magnetically ordered state with a very large extension is observed. This induced magnetic state survives to a temperature at least three times that of the ordering temperature of the low-Tc layer and the induced magnetization is approximately constant throughout at least a 10-nm-thick layer. The induced magnetic region within the low-Tc layer does not depend on the thickness of the adjacent high-Tc layer. This work was supported by the Icelandic Centre forResearch, Grant No. 174271-051, the University of IcelandResearch Fund, and the Swedish Research Council (VR).Peer reviewe

The Angular Dependence of the Critical Current of BaCeO3 Doped YBa2Cu3O6+x Thin Films

    Get PDF
The angular dependencies of the critical current of BaCeO3 (BCO) doped YBa2Cu3O6+x (YBCO) thin films grown with pulsed laser deposition (PLD) on SrTiO3 (001) were systematically investigated. The BCO concentration in the YBCO matrix was varied between 0-8 wt.%. Transmission electron microscopy confirmed that the 4% BCO containing sample has point-like, partly agglomerated BCO particles with diameter of 2.5 nm. The dopant degrades the crystal quality of YBCO but improves its in-field current carrying performance especially at low temperatures. The BCO addition affects the angular dependence of the critical current by broadening the B parallel to ab-axis peak of YCBO but no c-axis peak is seen, which is contrary to BaZrO3 doped films made by PLD. Although the particles are point-like, it is found that a model featuring only isotropic pinning centers is not sufficient to describe the angular dependence of the samples where B parallel to ab-axis of YCBO.</p

Multilayering BZO nanocolumns with different defect densities for YBCO high field applications

    Get PDF
The multilayer structures of alternating superconducting YBCO films doped with different BZO nanocolumn densities were utilized. We show that using 50 nm thick layers increases J (c) in the whole angular range by maximum 40% as compared with 200 nm single layer BZO-doped or multilayers with smaller thickness. Multilayering is found to be most effective at high magnetic fields and temperatures. These results indicate that demonstrated multilayer structures are extremely attractive for various electrical power applications in the foreseeable future. The experimental outcomes are thoroughly discussed with the mechanisms of crystalline quality and flux pinning in YBCO with different BZO nanorod densities multilayers of varying thicknesses

Implementing virtual collaborative inquiry practises in a middle-school context

The aim of the present study was to investigate the challenges that relate to the implementation of virtual inquiry practises in middle school. The case was a school course in which a group of Finnish students (N = 14) and teachers (N = 7) completed group inquiries through virtual collaboration, using a web-based learning environment. The task was to accomplish a cross-disciplinary inquiry into cultural issues. The students worked mainly at home and took much responsibility for their course achievements. The investigators analysed the pedagogical design of the course and the content of the participants' interaction patterns in the web-based environment, using qualitative content analysis and social network analysis. The findings suggest that the students succeeded in producing distinctive cultural products, and both the students and the teachers adopted novel roles during the inquiry. The web-based learning environment was used more as a coordination tool for organizing the collaborative work than as a forum for epistemic inquiry. The tension between the school curriculum and the inquiry practises was manifest in the participants' discussions of the assessment criteria of the course. The aim of the present study was to investigate the challenges that relate to the implementation of virtual inquiry practises in middle school. Does delayed measurement affect patient reports of provider performance? Implications for performance measurement of medical assistance with tobacco cessation: A Dental PBRN study

    Get PDF

Abstract

Background:

We compared two methods of measuring provider performance of tobacco control activities: immediate "exit cards" versus delayed telephone follow-up surveys. Current standards, e.g. HEDIS, use delayed patient measures that may over or under-estimate overall performance.

Methods:

Patients completed exit cards in 60 dental practices immediately after a visit to measure whether the provider "asked" about tobacco use, and "advised" the patient to quit. One to six months later patients were asked the same questions by telephone survey. Using the exit cards as the standard, we quantified performance and calculated sensitivity (agreement of those responding yes on telephone surveys compared with exit cards) and specificity (agreement of those responding no) of the delayed measurement.

Results:

Among 150 patients, 21% reporting being asked about tobacco use on the exit cards and 30% reporting being asked in the delayed surveys. The sensitivity and specificity were 50% and 75%, respectively. Similarly, among 182 tobacco users, 38% reported being advised to quit on the exit cards and this increased to 51% on the delayed surveys. The sensitivity and specificity were 75% and 64%, respectively. Increasing the delay from the visit to the telephone survey resulted in increasing disagreement.

Conclusion:

Patient reports differed considerably in immediate versus delayed measures. These results have important implications because they suggest that our delayed measures may over-estimate performance. The immediate exit cards should be included in the armamentarium of tools for measuring providers' performance of tobacco control, and perhaps other service delivery.</p
