    Kinetic Heterogeneities in a Highly Supercooled Liquid

    We study a highly supercooled two-dimensional fluid mixture via molecular dynamics simulation. We follow bond breakage events among particle pairs, which occur on the scale of the α\alpha relaxation time τα\tau_{\alpha}. Large scale heterogeneities analogous to the critical fluctuations in Ising systems are found in the spatial distribution of bonds which are broken in a time interval with a width of order 0.05τα0.05\tau_{\alpha}. The structure factor of the broken bond density is well approximated by the Ornstein-Zernike form. The correlation length is of order 100σ1100 \sigma_1 at the lowest temperature studied, σ1\sigma_1 being the particle size. The weakly bonded regions thus identified evolve in time with strong spatial correlations.Comment: 3 pages, 6 figure

    Characteristics of farmers’ selection criteria for cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) varieties differ between north and south regions of Burkina Faso

Walp.) varieties was conducted using the data collected from farmers’ participatory varietal selection (FPVS) activities conducted over 3 years with a total of 2401 farmers (1230 male and 1171 female) in 13 villages in Tougouri department in northern region and Tiéfora department in southern region of Burkina Faso in West Africa. Over the 3 years, farmer criteria for variety selection remained basically stable, but some variations among the regions and years were noticed. Grain yield was the most common and the most important criterion for farmers’ choice in both regions. Farmers in Tougouri (north) put more emphasis on early maturity (90%) and drought resistance (19.7%) as selection criteria than farmers in Tiéfora (south). Farmers in Tiéfora placed statistically significant importance on seed colour and plant type, while farmers in Tougouri did not, and for these selection criteria, there were only slight differences between genders in both areas. Results of stepwise multiple regression indicated that maturity and seed colour in the north, and seed size and seed colour in the south were the most important selection factors for farmers to select cowpea varieties. Improved varieties should have sufficiently good yield to be accepted, but other favoured traits may differ by target region as a reflection of local and regional market demands as well as deep-rooted cultural preferences. Understanding local and regional differences in selection criteria for cowpea varieties is necessary to improve the acceptance of newly released improved varieties. Preferences identified in the participatory activities could inform further development of cowpea breeding strategies for north and south regions of Burkina Faso

    Evidence for High-frequency Phonon Mediated S-wave Superconductivity : 11B-NMR Study of Al-doped MgB2

    We report 11^{11}B-NMR study on Al-doped MgB2_2 that addresses a possible mechanism for a high superconducting (SC) transition temperature (TcT_c) of ∼40\sim 40 K in recently discovered MgB2_2. The result of nuclear spin lattice relaxation rate 1/T11/T_1 in the SC state revealed that the size in the SC gap is not changed by substituting Al for Mg. The reduction on TcT_c by Al-doping is shown to be due to the decrease of N(EF)N(E_F). According to the McMillan equation, the experimental relation between TcT_c and the relative change in N(EF)N(E_F) allowed us to estimate a characteristic phonon frequency ω∼700\omega \sim 700 K and an electron-phonon coupling constant λ∼0.87\lambda \sim 0.87. These results suggest that the high-TcT_c superconductivity in MgB2_2 is mediated by the strong electron-phonon coupling with high-frequency phonons.Comment: 6pages, 3figure

    Evidence for Strong-coupling S-wave Superconductivity in MgB2 :11B NMR Study

    We have investigated a gap structure in a newly-discovered superconductor, MgB2 through the measurement of 11B nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate, ^{11}(1/T_1). ^{11}(1/T_1) is proportional to the temperature (T) in the normal state, and decreases exponentially in the superconducting (SC) state, revealing a tiny coherence peak just below T_c. The T dependence of 1/T_1 in the SC state can be accounted for by an s-wave SC model with a large gap size of 2\Delta /k_BT_c \sim 5 which suggests to be in a strong-coupling regime.Comment: 2 pages with 1 figur

    High-Resolution Photoemission Study of MgB2

    We have performed high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy on MgB2 and observed opening of a superconducting gap with a narrow coherent peak. We found that the superconducting gap is s-like with the gap value of 4.5 meV at 15 K. The temperature dependence (15 - 40 K) of gap value follows well the BCS form, suggesting that 2Delta/kBTc at T=0 is about 3. No pseudogap behavior is observed in the normal state. The present results strongly suggest that MgB2 is categorized into a phonon-mediated BCS superconductor in the weak-coupling regime.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures, accepted in Physical Review Letter

    Heterogeneous Diffusion in Highly Supercooled Liquids

    The diffusivity of tagged particles is demonstrated to be very heterogeneous on time scales comparable to or shorter than the α\alpha relaxation time τα\tau_{\alpha} (≅\cong the stress relaxation time) in a highly supercooled liquid via 3D molecular dynamics simulation. The particle motions in the relatively active regions dominantly contribute to the mean square displacement, giving rise to a diffusion constant systematically larger than the Einstein-Stokes value. The van Hove self-correlation function Gs(r,t)G_s(r,t) is shown to have a long distance tail which can be scaled in terms of r/t1/2r/t^{1/2} for t \ls 3\tau_{\alpha}. Its presence indicates heterogeneous diffusion in the active regions. However, the diffusion process eventually becomes homogeneous on time scales longer than the life time of the heterogeneity structure (∼3τα\sim 3 \tau_{\alpha}).Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
