    Labour Market Dynamics in Pakistan: Evidence from the Longitudinal Data

    The bulk of research on labour market conditions in Pakistan has concentrated on the economic activity rate, the number of employed persons, or the unemployment rate at a particular point in time. These stock measures of labour market situation are useful from a policy viewpoint as they give a broad indication of the dimension of the problem. For example, the recent labour force surveys show an increase in the level of open unemployment from 5.9 percent in 1997-98 to 7.8 percent in 1999-2000 [Pakistan (2001)]. There is also an emerging consensus that during the 1990s poverty has increased at the national as well as for rural and urban areas of the country [Qureshi and Arif (2001)]. Labour market is considered as the main route for establishing the link between macro policies, the resulting GDP growth and poverty alleviation [Rahman (2002)]. Interim Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (IPRSP) and other development plans have suggested various targets of employment creation for poverty reduction. The stock measures of labour market conditions, such as unemployment rate, are considered to be inadequate from the viewpoint of developing appropriate policy responses. There is a need to gain further insights by examining the structure of labour market in terms of its dynamic components: these being the turnover of persons into and out of the labour force and turnover into and out of employment and unemployment pools

    Increased platelet reactivity in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is mediated by a plasma factor

    Introduction Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) is a progressive, incurable fibrotic interstitial lung disease with a prognosis worse than many cancers. Its pathogenesis is poorly understood. Activated platelets can release pro-fibrotic mediators that have the potential to contribute to lung fibrosis. We determine platelet reactivity in subjects with IPF compared to age-matched controls. Methods Whole blood flow cytometry was used to measure platelet-monocyte aggregate formation, platelet P-selectin expression and platelet fibrinogen binding at basal levels and following stimulation with platelet agonists. A plasma swap approach was used to assess the effect of IPF plasma on control platelets. Results Subjects with IPF showed greater platelet reactivity than controls. Platelet P-selectin expression was significantly greater in IPF patients than controls following stimulation with 0.1 µM ADP (1.9% positive ±0.5 (mean ± SEM) versus 0.7%±0.1; p = 0.03), 1 µM ADP (9.8%±1.3 versus 3.3%±0.8; p<0.01) and 10 µM ADP (41.3%±4.2 versus 22.5%±2.6; p<0.01). Platelet fibrinogen binding was also increased, and platelet activation resulted in increased platelet-monocyte aggregate formation in IPF patients. Re-suspension of control platelets in plasma taken from subjects with IPF resulted in increased platelet activation compared to control plasma. Conclusions IPF patients exhibit increased platelet reactivity compared with controls. This hyperactivity may result from the plasma environment since control platelets exhibit increased activation when exposed to IPF plasma

    Modelling of the Terahertz Communication Channel for In-vivo Nano-networks in the Presence of Noise

    This paper focuses on the modelling of communication channel noise inside human tissues at the THz band (0.1-10THz). A novel model is put forward based on the study of the physical mechanism of the channel noise in the medium, which takes into account both the radiation of the medium and the molecular absorption from the transmitted signal. The derivation and the general concepts of the noise modelling is detailed in the paper. The results show that the channel noise power spectral density at the scale of several micrometres is at acceptable levels and the value tends to decrease with the increase of both distance and frequency. In addition, the channel noise is also related to the composition of the human tissues, with the result of higher channel noise in tissues with higher water concentration. The conclusion drawn from the conducted study and analysis paves the way for more comprehensive characterisation of the electromagnetic channel within in-vivo nano-networks

    THz Time Domain Characterization of Human Skin Tissue for Nano-Electromagnetic Communication

    This paper presents an experimental investigation of excised human skin tissue material parameters by THz Time Domain Spectroscopy in the band 0.1-2.5 THz. The results are used to evaluate the channel path loss Nano-electromagnetic communication. Refractive index and absorption coefficient values are evaluated for dermis layer of the human skin. Results obtained illustrate the effect of hydrated tissue on channel parameters and provide the optimum distance, which can be utilized for effective communication inside the human skin

    Conjugated Polymer (MEH-PPV:MWCNTs) Organic Nanocomposite for Photodetector Application

    Fabrication of a photodetector consists of the conjugated polymer "MEH-PPV"- poly (2-methoxy-5-(2'-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenlenevinylene) and MEH-PPV:MWCNT nanocomposite thin film. The volume ratio investigated was 0.75:0.25. MEH-PPV was dissolved in chloroform solvent and doped with MWCNTs. The spin coating method was used to achieve a facile and low cost photodetector. The absorption spectrum decreases by adding the CNTs. The PL spectrum detected recombination curve results by doping the polymer with CNTs, and AFM measurement showed an increase of roughness average from (0.168 to 2.43nm) of "MEH-PPV" and "MEH-PPV:CNTs", respectively. The doping ratio 0.25, which has a higher photoresponsivity, was evaluated at 1.70 A/W and 2.14 A/W of the UV and Vis. wavelength range. Time-dependent photocurrent analysis showed that the higher sensitivity was 176.56 % at 350nm and 290.99% at 500 nm of the "MEH-PPV:MWCNTs" thin films, while I-V characteristics showed a rectifying behavior

    Sensitivity of a Red Sea numerical wave model to spatial and temporal resolution of forcing wind field

    566-575Simulating waves using numerical wave models provide essential wave information for navigational safety and coastal protection applications. Accuracy of such simulations depends mainly on the accuracy of the forcing wind fields, which are influenced by the wind fields’ spatial and temporal resolutions. In this study, the sensitivity of a SWAN-based Red Sea wave model to spatial and temporal resolutions of forcing wind fields was investigated. The sensitivity analysis showed that forcing the wave model with wind fields of low spatial and/or temporal resolutions will affect the quality of wave model outputs, not only in terms of integrated wave parameters, but also in terms of the overall wave energy distribution in both frequency and directional domains. This study suggests that the spatial resolution of the forcing wind filed plays more significant role than the temporal resolution on the quality of the wave model predictions

    Thermal profiles within the channel of planar gunn diodes using micro-particle sensors

    The paper describes the use of a novel microparticle sensor (~3 μm diameter) and infra-red (IR) microscopy to measure the temperature profile within the active channel (typically 3 μm length and 120 μm width) of planar Gunn diodes. The method has enabled detailed temperature measurements showing an asymmetrical temperature profile along the active width of these devices. The asymmetrical temperature profile suggests a similar behaviour in the channel current density, which may contribute to the lower than expected RF output power

    Determination of training needs for water users associations in Gezira Scheme, Sudan

    124 The main objective of the study was to determine the training needs for Water Users Associations (WUAs) in order to suggest appropriate training programs. Seven irrigation divisions were selected randomly from 21 irrigation divisions (Wad Elnaw,Wad Elbur, Tabat, Kab Elgidad,  Shalaie, Wad Elmansi and Gaboja).  A questionnaire was designed to collect the required data by using random sample technique from 395 farmers. The information was collected during the period from April to July 2010.The data were statistically analyzed using the statistical package for social science (SPSS) to calculate frequency, percentages, mean and standard deviation. A Likert scale was used to determine the needed level of training. The study revealed that the previous training courses, training content and duration were neither suitable nor sufficient, because the training courses were concise, short and irrelevant to farmers training needs. In addition, the study revealed that the vast majority of Gezira Scheme farmers preferred practical oriented methods (field demonstrations and field days) to encourage the WUAs to adopt new technology in the irrigation of fields to develop skills, upgrade knowledge and bring positive change among farmers. The study showed that most of farmers were not convinced with the WUAs performance, and that there is a strong need for regular and intensive training programs to raise WUAs capacity regarding management and proper use of irrigation water; rules and regulations; operation and maintenance of irrigation canals; water request and crops water requirement; and water management and water supply contract. All farmers need active participation in water charge, cost recovery and participation in crop choice.
