    Numerical and Analytical Modelling of Hat-section Web Crippling Behaviour

    Hat-sections of thin-walled steel are subject to a concentrated load and a bending moment at an interior support. For a large concentrated load and a small bending moment, two failure mechanisms can occur: the yield-arc and the rolling mechanisms. Research indicated that the corner radius has a strong influence on the failure mechanism to occur [1-2}. It has been investigated whether small strips of the hat-section cross-sections can be used to gather insight into the differences of the two failure mechanisms. For small corner radii, strip behaviour and section behaviour are comparable. For large corner radii, this is not the case. Finite element models have been used to describe the cross-sectional behaviour of hat-sections for varying corner radii. Relatively simple analytical models have been derived which determine the location of first yield in the cross-section's web and the cross-section's rigid-plastic behaviour. Except for the largest corner radius, analytical models and finite element models give comparable results

    Design rules describing failure at an interior support of cold-formed steel flexural members are of an empirical nature. This is probably due to the complex character of the failure mechanisms, which makes an analytical approach difficult. An overview of research on this subject has been made. The Bakker model is reviewed. This is the first analytical model accurately describing one of the failure mechanisms occurring for a concentrated load and a small bending moment. A new research project is introduced for extending the Bakker model for a concentrated load and a medium or large bending moment

    FE Models for Sheeting under Interaction Load

    Experiments show that, after ultimate load, sheeting may fail by three distinct post-failure modes. In this paper, three finite element models are presented, one for each post-failure mode. One of the finite element models was difficult to develop. A spring model explains this. The finite element models show that, at ultimate load, only two different ultimate failure modes exist. This is important for the development of mechanical models for sheeting failure

    The Diagnostic Value of 18F-FDG PET/CT Scan in Characterizing Adrenal Tumors

    CONTEXT: Imaging plays an important role in the characterization of adrenal tumors, but findings might be inconclusive. The clinical question is whether 18F fluodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) is of diagnostic value in this setting.OBJECTIVE: This meta-analysis was aimed at the diagnostic value of 18F-FDG PET/CT in differentiating benign from malignant adrenal tumors discovered either as adrenal incidentaloma or during staging or follow-up of oncologic patients.DATA SOURCES: PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library were searched to select articles between 2000 and 2021.STUDY SELECTION: We included studies describing the diagnostic value of 18F-FDG PET/CT in adult patients with an adrenal tumor. Exclusion criteria were 10 or fewer participants, insufficient data on histopathology, clinical follow-up, or PET results. After screening of title and abstract by 2 independent reviewers, 79 studies were retrieved, of which 17 studies met the selection criteria.DATA EXTRACTION: Data extraction using a protocol and quality assessment according to QUADAS-2 was performed independently by at least 2 authors.DATA SYNTHESIS: A bivariate random-effects model was applied using R (version 3.6.2.). Pooled sensitivity and specificity of 18F-FDG PET/CT for identifying malignant adrenal tumors was 87.3% (95% CI, 82.5%-90.9%) and 84.7% (95% CI, 79.3%-88.9%), respectively. The pooled diagnostic odds ratio was 9.20 (95% CI, 5.27-16.08; P &lt; .01). Major sources of heterogeneity (I2, 57.1% [95% CI, 27.5%-74.6%]) were in population characteristics, reference standard, and interpretation criteria of imaging results.CONCLUSIONS: 18F-FDG PET/CT had good diagnostic accuracy for characterization of adrenal tumors. The literature, however, is limited, in particular regarding adrenal incidentalomas. Large prospective studies in well-defined patient populations with application of validated cutoff values are needed.</p

    Identification of numerical chromosome aberrations in archival tumours by in situ hybridization to routine paraffin sections: Evaluation of 23 phaeochromocytomas

    We have applied non-isotopic in situ hybridization (ISH) to interphase cell nuclei of 23 phaeochromocytomas (18 primary and 5 metastatic tumours) within routine paraffin-embedded tissue sections. Each tumour was screened for numerical aberrations with a defined alphoid repetitive DNA probe set containing DNA probes specific for chromosomes 1, 7, 15, and Y. Normal adrenal medullas and other normal human cell types served as cytogenetic controls. Preservation of tissue morphology enabled targeted analysis of tumour cells. The presence of numerical chromosome changes in the tumour cells could easily be evaluated by comparing the ISH results of the DNA probes. Numerical abnormalities not previously reported in this neoplasm included overrepresentation of chromosomes 1 and 7, loss of chromosome 15, and both gain and loss of chromosome Y (P values <0.01). The percentage of aneuploid cell nuclei in a tumour correlated well with the percentage of cells in the 4C peak of flow cytometric DNA histograms from these neoplasms. We conclude that interphase ISH can be used for the identification of new and reported cytogenetic changes in tumour cell nuclei within archival tissue sections. This novel procedure also allows for retrospective analysis of previously not karyotyped material

    Isolated Gust Generation for the Investigation of Airfoil-Gust Interaction

    As part of an effort to examine the impact of vortical gusts on airfoils, a simple gust generator has been built and investigated. This consists of a heaving at plate capable of following a specifed transverse trajectory across a water tunnel. The relationship between the trajectory and the properties of the gusts that are shed downstream is characterized for non-periodic heaving motion described by Eldredge's smooth motion equation. PIV experiments show that the circulation of the vortical gust is proportional to the heaving speed of the plate. Tests with a downstream NACA 0018 airfoil demonstrate repeatable forces in response to the produced gusts

    Angiotensin administration stimulates renal 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase activity in healthy men.BackgroundWe examined whether acute administration of angiotensin modulates the activity of 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (11βHSD), the intracellular enzyme catalyzing the interconversion between the hormonally active cortisol and inactive cortisone.MethodsTwenty-one male healthy subjects were examined after 1week of a low- and high-salt diet (50 and 200mmol/day, respectively). Separate infusions of angiotensin I (Ang I) and II (Ang II) were administered, both at rates of 4 and 8ng/kg/min. The ratios of tetrahydrocortisol + allotetrahydrocortisol/tetrahydrocortisone (THF + allo-THF/THE) and of free cortisol/free cortisone (UFF/UFE) in urine were measured as indices of overall 11βHSD set point and activity of renal 11βHSD type 2, respectively. Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was measured by constant infusion of 125I-iothalamate.ResultsAng I and Ang II infusion dose-dependently increased mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) and plasma aldosterone, and decreased plasma renin activity (PRA) and GFR at both diets. Ang I and Ang II infusion resulted in a dose-dependent decrease in the excretion of UFF, UFE, and of the UFF/UFE ratio at both diets, without changing the urinary (THF + allo-THF)/THE ratio. Salt restriction did not affect these 11βHSD variables, but was accompanied by a decrease in UFF and UFE excretion.ConclusionThis study suggests that acute angiotensin administration stimulates the activity of 11βHSD type 2 in human kidney. Angiotensin might therefore exert a dual effect on the mineralocorticoid receptor (i.e., an indirect agonistic effect by increasing aldosterone availability and a direct or indirect antagonistic effect by stimulation of renal 11βHSD type 2 activity)
