    Renoprotective effects of antioxidants against cisplatin nephrotoxicity.

    Nephrotoxicity is the major limitation for the clinical use of cisplatin as an anti-tumoural drug. Intracellular effects of cisplatin cause tubular damage and tubular dysfunction with sodium, potassium, and magnesium wasting. Renoperotective strategies against cisplatin are classified on 8 targets: 1) Decrease of cisplatin uptake by renal cell, 2) Inhibition of cisplatin metabolism, 3) Blocking cell death pathways, 4) Cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors, 5) Pharmacologic, molecular, and genetic blockade of p53, 6) Inhibition of specific Mitogen-activated protein kinase, 7) Antioxidants usage for renoprotection against cisplatin injury and inhibit of oxidative stress, 8) Suppress of inflammation. The oxidation reactions can produce free radicals, which start chain reactions and subsequently can cause a large number of diseases in humans. Antioxidant from natural products have attracted the physicians' attentions, nowadays. The natural product antioxidants detoxify reactive oxygen species (ROS) in kidneys, without affecting the anticancer efficacy of cisplatin. Hence, antioxidants have potential therapeutic applications

    The association of fasting blood glucose (FBG) and waist circumference in northern adults in Iran: A population based study

    Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between Fasting Blood Glucose (FBG) level and Waist Circumference (WC) in men and women among 25-65 years old people in the north of Iran.Material and methods: This was a cross-sectional and analytical research gender that carried out on the 1797 subjects (941 males and 856 females) between 25-65 years old using multistage cluster sampling technique. FBG was measured in the morning after a 12-hour fast and was determined by using laboratory kits (enzymatic methods) and spectrophotometry technique. Central obesity was defined based on World Health Organization criteria: waist circumference ≥102 cm and ≥88 cm in men and women, respectively. The SPSS.16 software was used for statistical analysis.Results: As whole, the mean of FBG in women (98.3 ± 40.1 mg/dl) was higher than in men (94.6 ± 32.2 mg/dl). Also, the mean of WC in men 4.5 cm was lower than in women. In men, the mean of FBG statistically differs between normal and central obese subjects both in 35-45 year-age group (P = 0.001) and in 45-55 year-age group (P = 0.042). As whole, in men, the FBG level increased up 2.82 mg/dl in each 10 cm of WC with the highest rate in 35-45 year-age group. In totally, in women, the FBG level increased up 3.48 mg/dl in each 10 cm of WC and in 25-35 year-age group and it was higher than in other age groups. In men, the regression coefficients were constant with age increasing while in women it was decreased. Constant trend in men and decreasing trend in women with age was shown between FBG and WC. The cut-off point of WC for detecting of diabetes obtained 89 cm and 107 cm in men and women, respectively.Conclusion: The positive correlation was seen between WC and FBG level and it was declined with age in women. Cut-off point for detecting of diabetes in men was less than in women. WC is useable as a predictor of type 2 diabetes mellitus risk among adults in the north of Iran. © 2014 Veghari et al.; licensee BioMed Central Ltd

    Effect of pimecrolimus on postoperative peritoneal adhesions in rat: An experimental study

    Introduction: Postoperative peritoneal adhesions (PPAs) is a common complication of abdominal surgeries causing significant morbidity and mortality. The inflammatory response to damaged peritoneal tissue is a speculated culprit. The aim of this study is to investigate the protective effect of pimecrolimus, an anti-inflammatory and immunomodulator agent, in formation of PPAs in rats. Methods: Complied with the Animal Research Reporting In Vivo Experiments (ARRIVE) Guidelines Checklist, 50 Albino rats underwent laparotomy and were allocated into 5 groups. In groups 1 to 3, topical pimecrolimus (25, 50 and 100 concentration, respectively) was applies on a scratched area of peritoneum. In group 4, only topical Eucerin was used and group 5, was the control group. On postoperative days 7 and 28, five rats from each group were randomly selected and the tensile strength and adhesiveness of intraabdominal fibrotic bundles were assessed. Results: There was no significant difference in tensile strength and adhesiveness, between the groups on postoperative day 7. On postoperative day 28, however, the tensile strength was significantly lower in pimecrolimus groups than in Eucerin (<0.001) and control (<0.001) groups. Groups with higher concentrations of pimecrolimus (group 2 and 3) developed significantly less adhesions than group 1, in which lower pimecrolimus concentration was used. Conclusion: Administration of topical pimecrolimus decrease adhesions and their tensile strength on postoperative day 28 in rats. © 2020 The Author

    On black hole temperature in Horndeski gravity

    It has been observed that for black holes in certain family of Horndeski gravity theories Wald's entropy formula does not lead to the correct first law for black hole thermodynamics. For this family of Horndeski theories speeds of propagation of gravitons and photons are in general different and gravitons move on an effective metric different than the one seen by photons. We show that the temperature of the black hole should be modified from surface gravity over 2\u3c0 to include effects of this effective metric. The modified temperature, with the entropy unambiguously computed by the solution phase space method, yields the correct first law. Our results have far reaching implications for the Hawking radiation and species problem, going beyond the Horndeski theories

    Enhanced transmission and beaming via a zero-index photonic crystal

    Certain types of photonic crystals with Dirac cones at the Γ point of their band structure have a zero effective index of refraction at Dirac cone frequency. Here, by an appropriate design of the photonic structure, we obtain a strong coupling between modes around the Dirac cone frequency of an all-dielectric zero-index photonic crystal and the guided ones supported by a photonic crystal waveguide. Consequently, we experimentally demonstrate that the presence of the zero-index photonic crystal at the inner side of the photonic crystal waveguide leads to an enhancement in the transmission of some of the guided waves passing through this hybrid system. Moreover, those electromagnetic waves extracted from the structure with enhanced transmission exhibit high directional beaming due to the presence of the zero-index photonic crystal at the outer side of the photonic crystal waveguide. © 2016 Author(s)

    Beaming and enhanced transmission through a subwavelength aperture via epsilon-near-zero media

    We numerically validate and experimentally realize considerable funneling of electromagnetic energy through a subwavelength aperture that is covered with an epsilon-near-zero metamaterial (ENZ). The epsilon-near-zero metamaterial is composed of two layers of metasurfaces and operates at microwave frequencies. We demonstrate that the presence of the metamaterial at the inner and outer sides of the aperture not only lead to a significant enhancement in light transmission, but also cause a directional emission of light extracting from this hybrid system. In addition to these experimental results, we theoretically demonstrate the same concept in mid-IR region for a subwavelength gold aperture with indium tin oxide as an epsilon-near-zero material. Moreover, we found that using a dielectric spacer in-between the sunwavelength aperture and the ENZ medium, it is possible to red-shift the enhancement/directional frequency of the system. © 2017 The Author(s)

    Long-range Tamm surface plasmons supported by graphene-dielectric metamaterials

    Considering the Ohmic losses of graphene in the calculations and by obtaining exact dispersion relations of the modes, we theoretically study propagation and localization characteristics of Tamm surface plasmons supported by terminated graphene metamaterials. The metamaterials are composed of alternating layers of graphene and dielectric with subwavelength periods. We also examine the Tamm modes within the framework of long-wavelength approximation. It is shown that, in case the Ohmic losses of the graphene layers are taken into account, surface plasmons are not supported in a long-wavelength region, in which the graphene-dielectric multilayer structure behaves as a hyperbolic metamaterial. We prove that, when the metamaterial is truncated with air, by choosing sufficiently thick but still subwavelength dielectric layers, i.e., d = 300 nm, these surface waves will have a moderate propagation (localization) length that is comparable with those of a single layer of graphene. On the other hand, in case a miniaturized graphene metamaterial (10 &lt; d(nm) &lt; 100) is truncated by a thick cap layer (dcap = 5d) with εcap &gt; εdielectric, it is possible to considerably improve the propagation and localization characteristics of the Tamm modes supported by the system within the 5.5-50 THz range of frequency, as compared to a single layer of graphene. © 2017 Author(s)

    A suggested prototype for assessing bone health

    Background- Osteoporosis is becoming a health concern worldwide. Considering the fact that prevention plays an important role in reducing the burden of this silent disease and in view of the limited resources available, many countries have adopted certain programs to fight osteoporosis through shifting their attention towards at-risk individuals. The Iranian Multicenter Osteoporosis Study (IMOS) is one of these programs. The program aims to assess bone health and the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in different parts of Iran with various altitudes, latitudes and lifestyle habits in a way that the results could be generalized to the country. Method- The present article presents the protocol used in the third phase of the study. It was designed based on the experiences gathered in the previous phases to overcome the shortcomings particularly subject loss. The questionnaire applied in this study was developed based on a thorough literature review of the risk factors and secondary causes of osteoporosis and was approved by an expert panel. It should be added that while the majority of the existing studies aim to study a certain aspect of osteoporosis, the present protocol provides the information needed for policy makers and researchers to study different osteoporosis-related issues. Conclusion- The authors believe the protocol, to be implemented with small modifications, can help policymakers in different parts of the world, particularly developing countries, gather accurate information on different aspects of bone health at the national level. © 2015, Academy of Medical Sciences of I.R.     Nearly perfect resonant absorption and coherent thermal emission by hBN-based photonic crystals

    In this paper, we numerically demonstrate mid-IR nearly perfect resonant absorption and coherent thermal emission for both polarizations and wide angular region using multilayer designs of unpatterned films of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). In these optimized structures, the films of hBN are transferred onto a Ge spacer layer on top of a one-dimensional photonic crystal (1D PC) composed of alternating layers of KBr and Ge. According to the perfect agreements between our analytical and numerical results, we discover that the mentioned optical characteristic of the hBN-based 1D PCs is due to a strong coupling between localized photonic modes supported by the PC and the phononic modes of hBN films. These coupled modes are referred as Tamm phonons. Moreover, our findings prove that the resonant absorptions can be red- or blue-shifted by changing the thickness of hBN and the spacer layer. The obtained results in this paper are beneficial for designing coherent thermal sources, light absorbers, and sensors operating within 6.2 μm to 7.3 μm in a wide angular range and both polarizations. The planar and lithography free nature of this multilayer design is a prominent factor that makes it a large scale compatible design. © 2017 Optical Society of America
