Prediction of RNA pseudoknots by Monte Carlo simulations
In this paper we consider the problem of RNA folding with pseudoknots. We use
a graphical representation in which the secondary structures are described by
planar diagrams. Pseudoknots are identified as non-planar diagrams. We analyze
the non-planar topologies of RNA structures and propose a classification of RNA
pseudoknots according to the minimal genus of the surface on which the RNA
structure can be embedded. This classification provides a simple and natural
way to tackle the problem of RNA folding prediction in presence of pseudoknots.
Based on that approach, we describe a Monte Carlo algorithm for the prediction
of pseudoknots in an RNA molecule.Comment: 22 pages, 14 figure
Can the Zee ansatz for neutrino masses be correct?
Working in the framework of three chiral neutrinos with Majorana masses, we
investigate a scenario first realized in an explicit model by Zee: that the
neutrino mass matrix is strictly off-diagonal in the flavor basis, with all its
diagonal entries precisely zero. This CP-conserving ansatz leads to two
relations among the three mixing angles and
two squared mass differences. We impose the constraint to conform with experiment, which requires the to
lie nearby one of four 1-parameter domains in -space. We exhibit the
implications for solar and atmospheric neutrino oscillations in each of these
cases. A unique version of the Zee {\it ansatz} survives confrontation with
experimental data, one which necessarily involves maximal just-so vacuum
oscillations of solar neutrinos.Comment: 7 pages, harvmac, typo corrected, ref. added, text modifie
Metallicities of galaxies in the nearby Lynx-Cancer void
Does the void environment have a sizable effect on the evolution of dwarf
galaxies? If yes, the best probes should be the most fragile least massive
dwarfs. We compiled a sample of about one hundred dwarfs with M_B in the range
-12 to -18 mag, falling within the nearby Lynx-Cancer void. The goal is to
study their evolutionary parameters -- gas metallicity and gas mass-fraction,
and to address the epoch of the first substantial episode of Star Formation.
Here we present and discuss the results of O/H measurements in 38 void
galaxies, among which several the most metal-poor galaxies are found with the
oxygen abundances of 12+log(O/H)=7.12-7.3 dex.Comment: 2 pages, one figure. To appear in proceedings of 'Environment and the

Aspects of Neutrino Mass Matrices
After an Introduction briefly describing the rise and fall of the three-zero
texture of the Zee model, we discuss still-allowed two-zero textures for the
Majorana three-neutrino mass matrix. Finally, a model with two right-handed
neutrinos and two Dirac texture zeros is described (FGY model) which can relate
CP violation in leptogenesis to CP violation in long-baseline neutrino
oscillations.Comment: 9 pages latex. Talk at Coral Gables 2003. Added reference
A study of fracture mechanisms in ATD roller bearing
The purpose was to investigate how microstructures, especially anisotropy, affects internal stresses and the overall mechanical response of bearings. Samples with the stress axis along the aligned carbide direction possessed high modulus values compared to those with their axis perpendicular to the carbide stringers. The difference in the modulus was found to be more than a factor of two. A series of experiments was conducted on rolled samples to further investigate this effect; the two sets of results were consistent with each other. The degree of anisotropy of the microstructure in terms of the carbide and matrix orientations was determined using x-ray diffraction. The stress state determination was conducted using neutron diffraction. It was found that there was little variation in the distribution of the internal stresses amongst different samples, indicating that small changes in the processing and geometrical conditions did not result in significant variations in the internal stress. A nominal tensile hoop stress of 39 ksi was obtained for the inner raceway. Furthermore, during the course of the investigation, it was apparent that there was a need to determine the stress state induced by the shrink fitting process. Therefore, a series of experiments was conducted using strain gages to identify the stress distribution in a shrink fitting process in three different types of geometries. Correlations were obtained to estimate the highest stress values in the outer and inner groove geometry. A finite element program based on the ANSYS system was developed to compute the stress distribution in the inner raceway geometry. This analysis indicates that the highest tensile stress in the system occurs at the ID of the ring with a stress value of over 5 times that of the applied radial stress. Results from all these facets were correlated with one another. It appears that the material does not fail as a result of any one single factor, but results from a combination of the various factors investigated
Electromagnetic Structure of Light Baryons in Lattice QCD
A method in which electromagnetic properties of hadrons are studied by direct
simulation of dynamical photon effects is applied to the extraction of the
isomultiplet structure of the octet baryons. Using 187 configurations at
with Wilson action, and up and down quark masses determined from
the meson spectrum, the nucleon splitting is found to be MeV; the hyperon splittings are found to be
, ,
MeV. Estimated systematic corrections arising
from finite volume and the quenched approximation are included in these
results.Comment: Talk presented at LATTICE96(phenomenology
The Cystic Sponge Anus
Introduction: A peculiar spongy appearance of the perianal skin was observed in a patient who underwent wide excision surgery for inguinal and gluteal hidradenitis suppurativa (HS). Case Presentation:This peculiar appearance was observed in a 62-year-old male patient. It included multiple orifices and cavities forming the spongy aspect of the perianal skin with multiple cysts and giant comedones. The perianal lesions were asymptomatic and the patient had never received any perianal treatment for the comedones or cysts. Histopathology was performed and demonstrated dilated hair follicles with flaky keratin and loose hair shafts in the center. The spongy appearance was most likely the result of spontaneous shedding of the cystic contents. Conclusion: We suspect that the "cystic sponge anus"might be associated with HS, smoking, the male gender, and may yet be another expression of an occlusive follicular disease. Future studies will be needed to clarify the prevalence and comorbidities of the "cystic sponge anus."</p
