Class of self-limiting growth models in the presence of nonlinear diffusion
The source term in a reaction-diffusion system, in general, does not involve
explicit time dependence. A class of self-limiting growth models dealing with
animal and tumor growth and bacterial population in a culture, on the other
hand are described by kinetics with explicit functions of time. We analyze a
reaction-diffusion system to study the propagation of spatial front for these

A certain class of Laplace transforms with applications to reaction and reaction-diffusion equations
A class of Laplace transforms is examined to show that particular cases of
this class are associated with production-destruction and reaction-diffusion
problems in physics, study of differences of independently distributed random
variables and the concept of Laplacianness in statistics, alpha-Laplace and
Mittag-Leffler stochastic processes, the concepts of infinite divisibility and
geometric infinite divisibility problems in probability theory and certain
fractional integrals and fractional derivatives. A number of applications are
pointed out with special reference to solutions of fractional reaction and

Partially Annealed Disorder and Collapse of Like-Charged Macroions
Charged systems with partially annealed charge disorder are investigated
using field-theoretic and replica methods. Charge disorder is assumed to be
confined to macroion surfaces surrounded by a cloud of mobile neutralizing
counterions in an aqueous solvent. A general formalism is developed by assuming
that the disorder is partially annealed (with purely annealed and purely
quenched disorder included as special cases), i.e., we assume in general that
the disorder undergoes a slow dynamics relative to fast-relaxing counterions
making it possible thus to study the stationary-state properties of the system
using methods similar to those available in equilibrium statistical mechanics.
By focusing on the specific case of two planar surfaces of equal mean surface
charge and disorder variance, it is shown that partial annealing of the
quenched disorder leads to renormalization of the mean surface charge density
and thus a reduction of the inter-plate repulsion on the mean-field or
weak-coupling level. In the strong-coupling limit, charge disorder induces a
long-range attraction resulting in a continuous disorder-driven collapse
transition for the two surfaces as the disorder variance exceeds a threshold
value. Disorder annealing further enhances the attraction and, in the limit of
low screening, leads to a global attractive instability in the system.Comment: 21 pages, 2 figure
Reaction-diffusion systems and nonlinear waves
The authors investigate the solution of a nonlinear reaction-diffusion
equation connected with nonlinear waves. The equation discussed is more general
than the one discussed recently by Manne, Hurd, and Kenkre (2000). The results
are presented in a compact and elegant form in terms of Mittag-Leffler
functions and generalized Mittag-Leffler functions, which are suitable for
numerical computation. The importance of the derived results lies in the fact
that numerous results on fractional reaction, fractional diffusion, anomalous
diffusion problems, and fractional telegraph equations scattered in the
literature can be derived, as special cases, of the results investigated in

A computational analysis of lower bounds for big bucket production planning problems
In this paper, we analyze a variety of approaches to obtain lower bounds for multi-level production planning problems with big bucket capacities, i.e., problems in which multiple items compete for the same resources. We give an extensive survey of both known and new methods, and also establish relationships between some of these methods that, to our knowledge, have not been presented before. As will be highlighted, understanding the substructures of difficult problems provide crucial insights on why these problems are hard to solve, and this is addressed by a thorough analysis in the paper. We conclude with computational results on a variety of widely used test sets, and a discussion of future research
Ownership, Activism and Engagement: Institutional Investors as Active Owners
Research Question We research two questions: First, why do some institutional investors operate at a distance from organizations seemingly acting only to “exit” and “trade” shares while others actively engage through various means of “voice”? Second, what processes and behaviour are associated with active ownership? Research Findings/Insights We develop the concept of active ownership by drawing on contrasting theories and images of ownership, identifying antecedents of active ownership and distinguishing between alternative processes of active ownership. Theoretical/Academic Implications Alternative pathways to active ownership contrast the distant, sometimes adversarial nature of shareholder activism with an engaged, collaborative relationship between investors and corporations. Few studies examine active ownership as a process of engagement and mutual exchange between parties taking a generally longer-term perspective towards investment in the firm and its affairs. After modelling active ownership, we develop a research agenda of substantive issues ranging from market and institutional conditions, through investment organization and practice, to board and investor relations. Practitioner/Policy Implications Opening up the multidimensionality of engagement and relations between investors and corporations is crucial to promoting good corporate governance. Policymakers and practitioners require such knowledge when anticipating and developing adjustments to institutions of corporate governance. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved
Quality of life in couples living with Huntington’s disease: the role of patients’ and partners’ illness perceptions
Research suggests that chronically ill patients and their partners perceive illness differently, and that these differences have a negative impact on patients’ quality of life (QoL). This study assessed whether illness perceptions of patients with Huntington’s disease (HD) differ from those of their partners, and examined whether spousal illness perceptions are important for the QoL of the couples (n = 51 couples). Partners reported that their HD-patient spouses suffered more symptoms and experienced less control than the patients themselves reported. Illness perceptions of patients and partners correlated significantly with patient QoL. Partners’ beliefs in a long duration of the patients’ illness and less belief in cure, were associated with patient vitality scores. Suggestions for future research emphasize the importance of qualitative research approaches in combination with cognitive-behavioural approaches
Technological Change in Economic Models of Environmental Policy: A Survey
This paper provides an overview of the treatment of technological change in economic models of environmental policy. Numerous economic modeling studies have confirmed the sensitivity of mid- and long-run climate change mitigation cost and benefit projections to assumptions about technology costs. In general, technical progress is considered to be a noneconomic, exogenous variable in global climate change modeling. However, there is overwhelming evidence that technological change is not an exogenous variable but to an important degree endogenous, induced by needs and pressures. Hence, some environmenteconomy models treat technological change as endogenous, responding to socio-economic variables. Three main elements in models of technological innovation are: (i) corporate investment in research and development, (ii) spillovers from R&D, and (iii) technology learning, especially learning-by-doing. The incorporation of induced technological change in different types of environmental-economic models tends to reduce the costs of environmental policy, accelerates abatement and may lead to positive spillover and negative leakage
