    Benchmarking Mentoring Practices for Effective Teaching of Mathematics and Science

    Pre-service mathematics and science teachers’ perceptions of their mentoring experiences were investigated using the five factor model of mentoring practices as a lens through which mentoring practices can be benchmarked for improvement. The Mentoring for Effective Teaching instrument was used to collect data from 68 preservice mathematics and science teachers on school placements in two Local Education Authorities (LEAs) in the South East region of England. The results of the data analysis indicate that mentors in the two LEAs overwhelmingly exhibit personal attributes for effective mentoring, provide adequate mentoring in pedagogical knowledge development, model effective teaching and professional practices and provide effective feedback to pre-service teachers. Yet, the results also indicate mentors did not provide adequate mentoring on systems requirements in relation to the national curriculum and school policies

    Level Of Physical Activity And Pain Scale In Elderly At Posyandu Lansia Mekar Sari Surabaya

    Introduction : The increasing number of elderly life expectancy has caused health issues. The majority of elderly have dealt with a pain issue. furthermore, the pain can affect their physical activities. Aim : This study aimed to analyze the relationship between elderly physical activity level with pain scale. Methods : An observational analytical study with a cross sectional approach was used for the study. The respondents were elderly people who visited Posyandu Lansia Mekar Sari Surabaya from 29th July until 11th October in 2017. Data of physical activities were collected by interviewing the respondents with questions taken from International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). They were also asked to point which scale matched their pain problem best on the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) card. The results of the questionnaire was examined by Rank Spearman Test. Result : There was no significant relationship found in between the two variables (p=0,328). Conclusion : The elderly people at Posyandu Lansia Mekar Sari Surabaya were active and mostly has mild and moderate scale of pain

    CORRELATION OF ALKALOID CONTENT AND TASTE OF HONEY FROM VARIOUS PROVINCES IN INDONESIA

    Objective: This study analyzed the correlation between alkaloid contents and taste (bitter and rough taste). Methods: Qualitative analysis was analyzed using Mayer and Draggendorff methods, while quantitative analysis was analyzed using spectrophotometric methods. Taste evaluation in each sample was carried out by descriptive method with parameters including bitter and rough taste. The correlation between alkaloid content and taste in honey was statistically analyzed using a correlation test. Results: The alkaloids testing showed that the sample with the highest alkaloid content was Tetragonula fuscobalteata honey from Sumbawa province, with an alkaloid content of 119.71 mg/g. In contrast, the sample with the lowest alkaloid content was Geniotrigona thoracica from West Sumatra at 21.24 mg/g. Taste evaluation results showed that the sample with the highest alkaloid content had the most bitter and rough taste. Conclusion: Honey that has the highest alkaloid content is T. fuscobalteata Sumbawa, with an alkaloid content of 119.71 mg/g, because the availability of adequate alkaloid feed supports this species. In contrast, the honey with the lowest alkaloid content was G. thorasica, with an alkaloid content of 21.24 mg/g, because the availability of adequate alkaloid feed did not support this species. Based on the data, the alkaloid content of honey has a linear correlation with the bitter and rough taste. The higher alkaloid content in honey causes the honey taste to become more bitter and rough

    Orbital Parameters and Chemical Composition of Four White Dwarfs in Post-Common Envelope Binaries

    We present FUSE observations of the hot white dwarfs in the post-common envelope binaries Feige 24, EUVE J0720-317, BPM 6502, and EUVE J2013+400. The spectra show numerous photospheric absorption lines which trace the white dwarf orbital motion. We report the detection of C III, O VI, P V, and Si IV in the spectra of Feige 24, EUVE J0720-317 and EUVE J2013+400, and the detection of C III, N II, Si III, Si IV, and Fe III in the spectra of BPM 6502. Abundance measurements support the possibility that white dwarfs in post-common envelope binaries accrete material from the secondary star wind. The FUSE observations of BPM 6502 and EUVE J2013+400 cover a complete binary orbit. We used the FUSE spectra to measure the radial velocities traced by the white dwarf in the four binaries, where the zero-point velocity were fixed using the ISM velocities in the line of sight of the stellar systems. For BPM 6502 we determined a white dwarf velocity semi-amplitude of K_WD = 18.6+/-0.5km/s, and with the velocity semi-amplitude of the red dwarf companion (K_RD = 75.2+/-3.1 km/s), we estimate the mass ratio to be q = 0.25+/-0.01. Adopting a spectroscopic mass determination for the white dwarf, we infer a low secondary mass of M_RD = 0.14+/-0.01 M_solar. For EUVE J2013+400 we determine a white dwarf velocity semi-amplitude of K_WD = 36.7+/-0.7 km/s. The FUSE observations of EUVE J0720-317 cover approximately 30% of the binary period and combined with the HST GHRS measurements (Vennes et al. 1999, ApJ 523, 386), we update the binary properties. FUSE observations of Feige 24 cover approximately 60% of the orbit and we combine this data set with HST STIS (Vennes et al. 2000, ApJ, 544, 423) data to update the binary properties.Comment: Accepted for publication in Ap

    Hurst Coefficient in long time series of population size: Model for two plant populations with different reproductive strategies

    Can the fractal dimension of fluctuations in population size be used to estimate extinction risk? The problem with estimating this fractal dimension is that the lengths of the time series are usually too short for conclusive results. This study answered this question with long time series data obtained from an iterative competition model. This model produces competitive extinction at different perturbation intensities for two different germination strategies: germination of all seeds vs. dormancy in half the seeds. This provided long time series of 900 years and different extinction risks. The results support the hypothesis for the effectiveness of the Hurst coefficient for estimating extinction risk

    The second-generation of direct-acting antiviral agents are the current treatment for chronic viral hepatitis C infection. To evaluate the regression of liver fibrosis in patients receiving this therapy, liver biopsy remains the most accurate method, but the invasiveness of this procedure is its major drawback. Different non-invasive tests have been used to study changes in the stage of liver fibrosis in patients with chronic viral hepatitis treated with the second-generation of direct-acting antiviral agents: liver stiffness measurements (with transient elastography or acoustic radiation force impulse elastography) or different scores that use serum markers to calculate a fibrosis score.     Hydroxamic acid-modified peptide microarrays for profiling isozyme-selective interactions and inhibition of histone deacetylases

    Histones control gene expression by regulating chromatin structure and function. The posttranslational modifications (PTMs) on the side chains of histones form the epigenetic landscape, which is tightly controlled by epigenetic modulator enzymes and further recognized by so-called reader domains. Histone microarrays have been widely applied to investigate histone–reader interactions, but not the transient interactions of Zn2+^{2+}-dependent histone deacetylase (HDAC) eraser enzymes. Here, we synthesize hydroxamic acid-modified histone peptides and use them in femtomolar microarrays for the direct capture and detection of the four class I HDAC isozymes. Follow-up functional assays in solution provide insights into their suitability to discover HDAC substrates and inhibitors with nanomolar potency and activity in cellular assays. We conclude that similar hydroxamic acid-modified histone peptide microarrays and libraries could find broad application to identify class I HDAC isozyme-specific substrates and facilitate the development of isozyme-selective HDAC inhibitors and probes

    Protease inhibitor-induced nausea and vomiting is attenuated by a peripherally acting, opioid-receptor antagonist in a rat model

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Protease inhibitors such as ritonavir can cause nausea and vomiting which is the most common reason for discontinuation. Rats react to nauseous and emetic stimuli by increasing their oral intake of non-nutritive substances like kaolin, known as pica behavior. In this study, we evaluated the effects of methylnaltrexone, a peripherally acting <it>mu</it>-opioid receptor antagonist that does not affect analgesia, on ritonavir-induced nausea and vomiting in a rat pica model.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We observed that 24 to 48 hr after administration of oral ritonavir 20 mg/kg, kaolin consumption increased significantly in rats (<it>P </it>< 0.01). This increase was attenuated by pretreatment with an intraperitoneal injection of methylnaltrexone (0.3–3.0 mg/kg) in a dose dependent manner (<it>P </it>< 0.01) and also with naloxone (0.1–0.3 mg/kg) (<it>P </it>< 0.01). The areas under the curve for kaolin intake from time 0 to 120 hr were significantly reduced after administration of the opioid antagonists. Food intake was not significantly affected. Plasma naltrexone levels were measured after methylnaltrexone injection, and no detectable levels were found, indicating that methylnaltrexone was not demethylated in our experimental paradigm.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These results suggest that methylnaltrexone may have potential clinical utility in reducing nausea and vomiting in HIV patients who take ritonavir.</p
