    This article studies the potential of combining charged-current disappearance measurements of \nu_{\mu} to \nu_{\tau} from MINOS and an off-axis beam. I find that the error on \Delta m^2 from a 100 kt-yr off-axis measurement is a few percent of itself.     Evidence for <i>L</i>-dependence generated by channel coupling: <sup>16</sup>O scattering from <sup>12</sup>C at 115.9 MeV

    Background: In earlier work, inversion of S matrix for 330 MeV 16O on 12C resulted in highly undulatory potentials; the S matrix resulted from the inclusion of strong coupling to states of projectile and target nuclei. L-independent S-matrix equivalent potentials for other explicitly L-dependent potentials have been found to be undulatory. Purpose: To investigate the possible implications of the undulatory dynamic polarization potential for an underlying L dependence of the 16O on 12C optical potential. Methods: S matrix to potential, SL → V (r), inversion which yields local potentials that reproduce the elastic channel S matrix of coupled channel (CC) calculations, will be applied to the S matrix for 115.9 MeV 16O on 12C. Further, SL for explicitly L-dependent potentials are inverted and the resulting L-independent potentials are characterized and compared with the undulatory potentials found for 16O on 12C. Results: Some of the undulatory features exhibited by the potentials modified by channel coupling for 115.9 MeV 16O on 12C can be simulated by simple parameterized L-dependent potentials. Conclusions: The elastic scattering of 16O by 12C is a particularly favorable case for revealing the effective L dependence of the potential modified by channel coupling. Nevertheless, there is no reason to suppose that undularity is not a generic property leading in many cases to the choice: nucleus-nucleus potentials are (i) smooth and L-dependent, (ii) L-independent and undulatory, or (iii) both

    Indications of a Large Fraction of Spectroscopic Binaries Among Nuclei of Planetary Nebulae

    Previous work indicates that about 10% of planetary-nebula nuclei (PNNi) are photometrically variable short-period binaries with periods of hours to a few days. These systems have most likely descended from common-envelope (CE) interactions in initially much wider binaries. Population-synthesis studies suggest that these very close pairs could be the short-period tail of a much larger post-CE binary population with periods of up to a few months. We have initiated a radial-velocity (RV) survey of PNNi with the WIYN 3.5-m telescope and Hydra spectrograph, which is aimed at discovering these intermediate-period binaries. We present initial results showing that 10 out of 11 well-observed PNNi have variable RVs, suggesting that a significant binary population may be present. However, further observations are required because we have as yet been unable to fit our sparse measurements with definite orbital periods, and because some of the RV variability might be due to variations in the stellar winds of some of our PNNi.Comment: 11 pages, 1 table, no figures.     Signless Laplacian Estrada index of a graph GG, defined as SLEE(G)=i=1neqiSLEE(G)=\sum^{n}_{i=1}e^{q_i}, where q1,q2,,qnq_1, q_2, \cdots, q_n are the eigenvalues of the matrix Q(G)=D(G)+A(G)\mathbf{Q}(G)=\mathbf{D}(G)+\mathbf{A}(G). We determine the unique graphs with maximum signless Laplacian Estrada indices among the set of graphs with given number of cut edges, pendent vertices, (vertex) connectivity and edge connectivity.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figure
