A neotype for Clarias gariepinus (Burchell, 1822) is designated and described. Data from 41 specimens from the type locality are also presented. The geographical distribution of the species is discussed.Rhodes University Libraries (Digitisation
Marine Incursion: The Freshwater Herring of Lake Tanganyika Are the Product of a Marine Invasion into West Africa
The spectacular marine-like diversity of the endemic fauna of Lake Tanganyika, the oldest of the African Great Lakes, led early researchers to suggest that the lake must have once been connected to the ocean. Recent geophysical reconstructions clearly indicate that Lake Tanganyika formed by rifting in the African subcontinent and was never directly linked to the sea. Although the Lake has a high proportion of specialized endemics, the absence of close relatives outside Tanganyika has complicated phylogeographic reconstructions of the timing of lake colonization and intralacustrine diversification. The freshwater herring of Lake Tanganyika are members of a large group of pellonuline herring found in western and southern Africa, offering one of the best opportunities to trace the evolutionary history of members of Tanganyika's biota. Molecular phylogenetic reconstructions indicate that herring colonized West Africa 25–50MYA, at the end of a major marine incursion in the region. Pellonuline herring subsequently experienced an evolutionary radiation in West Africa, spreading across the continent and reaching East Africa's Lake Tanganyika during its early formation. While Lake Tanganyika has never been directly connected with the sea, the endemic freshwater herring of the lake are the descendents of an ancient marine incursion, a scenario which may also explain the origin of other Tanganyikan endemics
Taxonomy, phylogeny and biogeography of catfishes (Ostariophysi, Siluroidei): an overview
An overview is given of our present knowledge on taxonomy, phylogeny and biogeography of catfishes or Siluroidei, one of the worlds economically important groups of fresh and
brackish water fishes. In an introductory chapter, the taxonomic position of catfishes in the
ichthyological classification is discussed; their external morphology is briefly described and synapomorphies showing their monophyly are listed. In the following chapter, cattish systematics are presented. Thirty three families with 416 genera and 2 584 species are presently recognized, but these numbers are continuously changing; it is therefore obvious that the systematics of many taxa are still rather poorly known. For each family, data (if any) supporting their monophyly are given together with a short description of their external morphology. The valid genera are listed, with for each genus, the number of presently recognized species with a reference (if any) to a recent revisionary study. Contributions to the phylogenetic study of catfishes are scarce, and dealing only with a few families and with a limited number of taxa within the families. As a results
only few data on catfish phylogeny are presently known. Therefore, also our knowledge on historical
biogeography of catfishes is seriously limited, until more date become available on interfamilial and intergeneric relationships
Patterns of microhabitat use among fourteen abundant fishes of the lower Ntem River Basin (Cameroon)
A study of microhabitat use by fourteen abundant fish species was undertaken in the lower Ntem River Basin in Cameroon (Africa). Seventy-one microhabitats including pools, raceways and riffles were studied twice during the 1994 and 1995 dry season. Results obtained by Canonical
Correspondence Analysis (CCA) showed a good niche separation along the ordination axes I
(λ1 = 0.37) and II (λ2 = 0.20). Microhabitat selection by these species reflects response to several physical factors including width, depth, current velocity and substrate type. However, a substantial part of the variation in species segregation was explained by both instream (% leaves, woods and roots, and aquatic plants) and bankside (% mean canopy closure)
cover. A striking pattern encountered during this study was the frequent size-related variation in habitat use displayed by many species. For example, smaller individuals of Brycinus longipinnis, Barbus camptacanthus, Distichodus notospilus, and D. hypostomatus, occurred
more often in faster flowing waters than did their larger conspecifics. The association displayed by CCA was high (0.957 and 0.938, respectively for the first and second axis), and Monte Carlo test (99 permutations) revealed that these associations were significantly different from random (p = 0.01). The implications of these results for habitat management are discussed
