    Synthesis of AgInS2 nanoparticles Directly in Poly (3-hexyl thiophene) (P3HT) Matrix: Photoluminescence quenching studies

    Inorganic semiconductor AgInS, nanoparticles and P3HT/AgInS2 composite was synthesized by decomposition of silver indium xanthate. The synthesized nanoparticles and composite were characterized by XRD and UV-Vis spectroscopy. PL quenching of the composite demonstrate that the electron transfer from polymer to inorganic NPs through ex-situ solution blending is less efficient in PL quenching as compared to in-situ synthesis

    Search for Quark-Lepton Compositeness at Tevatron and LHC

    We make a Monte Carlo study on compositeness of first generation quarks and leptons using the Drell-Yan distribution in the high dielectron mass region at the Tevatron and LHC energies. The current experimental lower limits on the compositeness scale, \Lambda, vary from 2.5 to 6.1 TeV. In the present analysis, we assume that there will be no deviation of the dielectron mass spectrum from Standard Model prediction at center of mass energy 2 TeV (Tevatron) and 14 TeV (LHC). We then find that in the LL, RR, RL and LR chirality channels of the quark-electron currents, it is possible to extend the lower limits on \Lambda (at 95% {CL}) to a range of 6 to 10 TeV for 2 fb^{-1} and 9 to 19 TeV for 30 fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity at Tevatron. At LHC, the corresponding limits extend to a range of 16 to 25 TeV for 10 fb^{-1} and 20 to 36 TeV for 100 fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity

    Oral myiasis in a cerebral palsy patient: a case report

    Myiasis is a rare condition caused by the invasion of tissues by the larvae of flies, mainly from the order of Diptera. Many cases of myiasis involving various human organs have been reported. Oral Myiasis is very rare in healthy persons. It occurs mainly in the tropics and is usually associated with inadequate personal and public hygiene; sometimes accompanied by poor manual dexterity. We present a case of oral myiasis in a mentally retarded, 13- year-old boy suffering with cerebral palsy. The diagnosis was based on the characteristic clinical features and the visualization of wriggling larvae. Large numbers of larvae were found in the gingival sulcus. Treatment consisted of manual removal of the larvae, one by one, with the help of turpentine oil and clinical forceps, local debridement of the labial gingival and oral hygiene practice. Healing was uneventful, with resolution of the condition

    Evaluation of burn wound healing property of ocimum sanctum by monitoring of period of re-epithelization in rabbits

    Background: Burns remain a major public health problem all over the world, especially in developing countries. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a major cause of infection and a contributing factor in the death of patients with burns. So, there is a growing need to develop drugs which will prevent infections and complications more effectively than the presently used drugs. Ocimum sanctum L. (Tulsi in Hindi) has been shown to have antioxidant properties, which may be responsible and favorable for faster wound healing. The present study was carried out to evaluate the wound healing property of O. sanctum by monitoring the period of re-epithelization in thermal burns with and without supportive treatment of ointment silver sulfadiazine.Methods: Wound healing property of O. sanctum was evaluated by monitoring the period of re-epithelization.Results: The period of re-epithelization, in Control group was 34 ± 1.26 days, in Standard group treated with ointment silver sulfadiazine was 30.33 ± 1.37 days, in group treated with O. sanctum was 30.50 ± 1.87 days and in group treated with ointment silver sulfadiazine + O. sanctum was 26 ± 1.41 days.Conclusions: Group treated with ointment silver sulfadiazine + O. sanctum showed minimum re-epithelization period. So, the most effective treatment for burn wound healing in this study was ointment silver sulfadiazine + O. sanctum

    Stiffness Characteristics of Fibre-reinforced Composite Shaft Embedded with Shape Memory Alloy Wires

    Frequent coast up/coast down operations of rotating shafts in the power and aerospace industry expose the flexible rotors to the risk of fatigue failures. Resonant vibrations during passage through critical speeds induce large stresses that may lead to failures. In this paper, the use of nitinol [shape memory alloy (SMA)] wires in the fibre-reinforced composite shaft, for the purpose ofmodifying shaft stiffness properties to avoid such failures, is discussed. A setup has been developed to fabricate the composite shaft (made of fibre glass and epoxy resin) embedded with pre-stressed SMA wires. Experiments have been carried out on the shaft to estimate the changes in the natural frequency of the composite shaft due to activation and deactivation ofSMA wires. The comparisonofthe experimental results with the established analytical results indicates feasibility ofvibration control using the special properties of SMA wires
