    Jacobi-Predictor-Corrector Approach for the Fractional Ordinary Differential Equations

    We present a novel numerical method, called {\tt Jacobi-predictor-corrector approach}, for the numerical solution of fractional ordinary differential equations based on the polynomial interpolation and the Gauss-Lobatto quadrature w.r.t. the Jacobi-weight function ω(s)=(1−s)α−1(1+s)0\omega(s)=(1-s)^{\alpha-1}(1+s)^0. This method has the computational cost O(N) and the convergent order ININ, where NN and ININ are, respectively, the total computational steps and the number of used interpolating points. The detailed error analysis is performed, and the extensive numerical experiments confirm the theoretical results and show the robustness of this method.Comment: 24 pages, 5 figure

    Technology Decomposition and Technology Recombination in Industrial Catch-up for Large Emerging Economies: Evidence from Chinese Manufacturing Industries

    ABSTRACT The influence of technological learning on industry-level catch-up has long drawn substantial attention in the catch-up research field. However, the underlying mechanisms of technological learning and the unique catch-up context in large emerging economies are much less explored. To explain the technological learning processes of latecomers that face the technology gap and strive to build differentiated competitive advantage, this study builds on the absorptive capacity perspective and deconstructs technological learning processes into two mechanisms: technology decomposition and technology recombination. The former entails decomposing advanced technologies into pieces, parts, or modules, while the latter entails the process of capturing market opportunities through recombining knowledge from diverse sources into commercial products through localized innovations and adaptations. Then, we propose a unique ‘ladder-like’ catch-up context (i.e., technology ladder and market ladder) and investigate how the technological learning process and the unique catch-up context jointly affect industrial catch-up performance in China. Using seven-year panel data from Chinese manufacturing industries, the results indicate that only technology recombination has a significantly positive relationship with industrial catch-up performance. In addition, the market ladder strengthens the positive impact of technology recombination on industrial catch-up, while the technology ladder weakens the positive impact of technology decomposition on catch-up.</jats:p

    Molecular Diversity and Potential Anti-neuroinflammatory Activities of Cyathane Diterpenoids from the Basidiomycete Cyathus africanus

    Ten new polyoxygenated cyathane diterpenoids, named neocyathins A-J (1-10), together with four known diterpenes (11-14), were isolated from the liquid culture of the medicinal basidiomycete fungus Cyathus africanus. The structures and configurations of these new compounds were elucidated through comprehensive spectroscopic analyses including 1D NMR, 2D NMR (HSQC, HMBC, NOESY) and HRESIMS, and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) data. Neuroinflammation is implicated in the pathogenesis of various neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimers' disease (AD). All isolated compounds were evaluated for the potential anti-neuroinflammatory activities in BV2 microglia cells. Several compounds showed differential effects on the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated and AÎČ1-42-treated mouse microglia cell line BV-2. Molecular docking revealed that bioactive compounds (e.g., 11) could interact with iNOS protein other than COX-2 protein.     A novel osmosis membrane bioreactor-membrane distillation hybrid system for wastewater treatment and reuse

A novel approach was designed to simultaneously enhance nutrient removal and reduce membrane fouling for wastewater treatment using an attached growth biofilm (AGB) integrated with an osmosis membrane bioreactor (OsMBR) system for the first time. In this study, a highly charged organic compound (HEDTA3-) was employed as a novel draw solution in the AGB-OsMBR system to obtain a low reverse salt flux, maintain a healthy environment for the microorganisms. The AGB-OsMBR system achieved a stable water flux of 3.62 L/m2 h, high nutrient removal of 99% and less fouling during a 60-day operation. Furthermore, the high salinity of diluted draw solution could be effectively recovered by membrane distillation (MD) process with salt rejection of 99.7%. The diluted draw solution was re-concentrated to its initial status (56.1 mS/cm) at recovery of 9.8% after 6 h.     Polymorphism of the pig-implantation protein 3 (preis3) gene and its association with litter size traits

    The pre-implantation protein 3 (prei3), which might play a role in pre-implantation embryogenesis, is one of the promising candidate genes for litter size traits in pigs. In this study, a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP: T802G) in intron 6 of the pig prei3 gene was detected and a genotyping assay for this SNP was developed. An association study for this SNP with litter size was performed in two independent populations. One population consisted of crossbred sows derived from Landrace, Large White, Chinese Tongcheng and/or Chinese Meishan (Line DIV). The other population constituted of crossbred animals derived from Chinese Qingping and Duroc (QD). Statistical analysis demonstrated that, in first parity, 2.65 more piglets were born and 3.82 more piglets were born alive in sows in Line DIV with genotype TT than with genotype GG. For second and subsequent litters, in both the DIV and QD lines there were significant differences in the number of piglets born alive between TG and GG sows, with the TG sows producing more piglets born alive than the GG sows. These results suggest that the prei3 SNP is significantly associated with litter size in the two populations studied, and could be useful in selection for increasing litter size in pigs.     Effective Capacity in Broadcast Channels with Arbitrary Inputs

    We consider a broadcast scenario where one transmitter communicates with two receivers under quality-of-service constraints. The transmitter initially employs superposition coding strategies with arbitrarily distributed signals and sends data to both receivers. Regarding the channel state conditions, the receivers perform successive interference cancellation to decode their own data. We express the effective capacity region that provides the maximum allowable sustainable data arrival rate region at the transmitter buffer or buffers. Given an average transmission power limit, we provide a two-step approach to obtain the optimal power allocation policies that maximize the effective capacity region. Then, we characterize the optimal decoding regions at the receivers in the space spanned by the channel fading power values.     Superconducting ECR ion source: From 24-28 GHz SECRAL to 45 GHz fourth generation ECR.

    The development of superconducting ECR source with higher magnetic fields and higher microwave frequency is the most straight forward path to achieve higher beam intensity and higher charge state performance. SECRAL, a superconducting third generation ECR ion source, is designed for 24-28 GHz microwave frequency operation with an innovative magnet configuration of sextupole coils located outside the three solenoids. SECRAL at 24 GHz has already produced a number of record beam intensities, such as 40Ar12+ 1.4 emA, 129Xe26+ 1.1 emA, 129Xe30+ 0.36 emA, and 209Bi31+ 0.68 emA. SECRAL-II, an upgraded version of SECRAL, was built successfully in less than 3 years and has recently been commissioned at full power of a 28 GHz gyrotron and three-frequency heating (28 + 45 + 18 GHz). New record beam intensities for highly charged ion production have been achieved, such as 620 eÎŒA 40Ar16+, 15 eÎŒA 40Ar18+, 146 eÎŒA 86Kr28+, 0.5 eÎŒA 86Kr33+, 53 eÎŒA 129Xe38+, and 17 eÎŒA 129Xe42+. Recent beam test results at SECRAL and SECRAL II have demonstrated that the production of more intense highly charged heavy ion beams needs higher microwave power and higher frequency, as the scaling law predicted. A 45 GHz superconducting ECR ion source FECR (a first fourth generation ECR ion source) is being built at IMP. FECR will be the world's first Nb3Sn superconducting-magnet-based ECR ion source with 6.5 T axial mirror field, 3.5 T sextupole field on the plasma chamber inner wall, and 20 kW at a 45 GHz microwave coupling system. This paper will focus on SECRAL performance studies at 24-28 GHz and technical design of 45 GHz FECR, which demonstrates a technical path for highly charged ion beam production from 24 to 28 GHz SECRAL to 45 GHz FECR

    Automating the extraction of essential genes from literature

    The construction of repositories with curated information about gene essentiality for organisms of interest in Biotechnology is a very relevant task, mainly in the design of cell factories for the enhanced production of added-value products. However, it requires retrieval and extraction of relevant information from literature, leading to high costs regarding manual curation. Text mining tools implementing methods addressing tasks as information retrieval, named entity recognition and event extraction have been developed to automate and reduce the time required to obtain relevant information from literature in many biomedical fields.
