The Schrodinger-like Equation for a Nonrelativistic Electron in a Photon Field of Arbitrary Intensity

The ordinary Schrodinger equation with minimal coupling for a nonrelativistic electron interacting with a single-mode photon field is not satisfied by the nonrelativistic limit of the exact solutions to the corresponding Dirac equation. A Schrodinger-like equation valid for arbitrary photon intensity is derived from the Dirac equation without the weak-field assumption. The "eigenvalue" in the new equation is an operator in a Cartan subalgebra. An approximation consistent with the nonrelativistic energy level derived from its relativistic value replaces the "eigenvalue" operator by an ordinary number, recovering the ordinary Schrodinger eigenvalue equation used in the formal scattering formalism. The Schrodinger-like equation for the multimode case is also presented.Comment: Tex file, 13 pages, no figur

Global Hilbert Expansion for the Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann System

We study the Hilbert expansion for small Knudsen number ε\varepsilon for the Vlasov-Boltzmann-Poisson system for an electron gas. The zeroth order term takes the form of local Maxwellian: $ F_{0}(t,x,v)=\frac{\rho_{0}(t,x)}{(2\pi \theta_{0}(t,x))^{3/2}} e^{-|v-u_{0}(t,x)|^{2}/2\theta_{0}(t,x)},\text{\ }\theta_{0}(t,x)=K\rho_{0}^{2/3}(t,x).OurmainresultstatesthatiftheHilbertexpansionisvalidat Our main result states that if the Hilbert expansion is valid at t=0forwellpreparedsmallinitialdatawithirrotationalvelocity for well-prepared small initial data with irrotational velocity u_0,thenitisvalidfor, then it is valid for 0\leq t\leq \varepsilon ^{-{1/2}\frac{2k-3}{2k-2}},where where \rho_{0}(t,x)and and u_{0}(t,x)satisfytheEulerPoissonsystemformonatomicgas satisfy the Euler-Poisson system for monatomic gas \gamma=5/3$

de Sitter geodesics: reappraising the notion of motion

The de Sitter spacetime is transitive under a combination of translations and proper conformal transformations. Its usual family of geodesics, however, does not take into account this property. As a consequence, there are points in de Sitter spacetime which cannot be joined to each other by any one of these geodesics. By taking into account the appropriate transitivity properties in the variational principle, a new family of maximizing trajectories is obtained, whose members are able to connect any two points of the de Sitter spacetime. These geodesics introduce a new notion of motion, given by a combination of translations and proper conformal transformations, which may possibly become important at very-high energies, where conformal symmetry plays a significant role.Comment: 9 pages. A Fast DOA Estimation Algorithm Based on Polarization MUSIC

    Get PDF
A fast DOA estimation algorithm developed from MUSIC, which also benefits from the processing of the signals' polarization information, is presented. Besides performance enhancement in precision and resolution, the proposed algorithm can be exerted on various forms of polarization sensitive arrays, without specific requirement on the array's pattern. Depending on the continuity property of the space spectrum, a huge amount of computation incurred in the calculation of 4-D space spectrum is averted. Performance and computation complexity analysis of the proposed algorithm is discussed and the simulation results are presented. Compared with conventional MUSIC, it is indicated that the proposed algorithm has considerable advantage in aspects of precision and resolution, with a low computation complexity proportional to a conventional 2-D MUSIC

Theoretic Limits on the Equation of State Parameter of Quintessence

The value of scalar field coupled to gravity should be less than the Planck scale in the consistent theory of quantum gravity. It provides a theoretic constraint on the equation of state parameter for the quintessence. In some cases our theoretic constraints are more stringent than the constraints from the present experiments.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures; minor corrections and refs adde

Microscopic DC-TDHF study of heavy-ion potentials and fusion cross sections

We study heavy-ion fusion reactions at energies near the Coulomb barrier, in particular with neutron-rich radioactive ion beams. Dynamic microscopic calculations are carried out on a three-dimensional lattice using the Density-Constrained Time-Dependent Hartree-Fock (DC-TDHF) method. New results are presented for the 132^{132}Sn+40^{40}Ca system which are compared to 132^{132}Sn+48^{48}Ca studied earlier. Our theoretical fusion cross-sections agree surprisingly well with recent data measured at HRIBF. We also study the near- and sub-barrier fusion of 24,16^{24,16}O on 12^{12}C which is important to determine the composition and heating of the crust of accreting neutron stars.Comment: Talk given by .
