    Surface bioactivation through the nanostructured layer on titanium modified by facile HPT treatment

    AbstractFacile fabrication of nanostructured surface is of great importance for the use of titanium (Ti) implants in biomedical field. In this study, a low-cost and easy-to-operate method called HPT (hydrothermal &amp; pressure) here has been developed and used to fabricate the expected nanostructured surface on Ti substrates. The effects of experimental parameters on the morphology of Ti surface were investigated and characterized. The results indicated that by altering the hydrothermal pressure, NaOH concentration and treating time, surface nanostructure like nanopetals or nanoflakes could be formed on the surface of Ti substrates. The orthogonal experiments were conducted to demonstrate the optimized operation conditions. A formation mechanism of the nanostructured titanate layer was proposed, revealing that the nanostructured layer could be formed via a special upward and downward co-growth manner. In vitro cell culture showed that the HPT treated Ti substrates, especially the T-10 sample, could greatly enhance the cell-material interactions, i.e. the cell proliferation and differentiation, focal protein adhesion, and osteogenic factor expression. The HPT method paves a new way to modify the surface of Ti implants with better bioactivity and promising prospect for future biomedical applications.</jats:p

    Experimental investigation of immiscible water-alternating-gas injection in ultra-high water-cut stage reservoir

    Water-alternating-gas (WAG) injection is recommended as a means of improving gas mobility control. This paper describes a series of coreflood tests conducted to investigate the potential for continuous gas injection and WAG injection in ultra-high water-cut saline reservoirs. The mechanisms of immiscible water-alternating-nitrogen injection on residual oil distribution are analyzed, and pore-scale analysis is conducted. The effect of injection parameters on residual oil distribution and recovery efficiency is also evaluated. Coreflood results show that tertiary oil recovery efficiency is significantly higher using WAG injection than continuous gas injection during the ultra-high water-cut period. Pore-scale visualization illustrates the movement of gas through the waterflooded channels into the pore space previously occupied by water and residual oil, which then becomes trapped. Injected gas breaks the force balance of microscopic residual oil and reduces residual oil saturation. This mobilizes the displaced/collected residual oil into large waterfilled pores and blocks several water channels. WAG flooding can decrease free-gas saturation and increase trapped-gas saturation significantly, resulting in decreased relative permeabilities of gas and water. The experimental results indicate that appropriate WAG design parameters could enhance recovery by 15.62% when the injected pore volume of water and gas in the cycle is 0.3 PV at a gas/water injection ratio of 2:1.     Identification and phylogenetic analysis in Pterorhinus chinensis (Aves, Passeriformes, Leiothrichidae) based on complete mitogenome

    The Black-throated Laughingthrush (Pterorhinus chinensis) is a bird belonging to the order Passeriformes and the family Leiothrichidae, and is found in Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam. Pterorhinus chinensis was once classified as belonging to the genus Garrulax. However, recent research has reclassified it in the genus Pterorhinus. In this study, we sequenced and characterized the complete mitogenome of P. chinensis. The complete mitochondrial genome of P. chinensis is 17,827 bp in length. It consists of 13 PCGs, 22 tRNAs, two rRNAs, and two control regions. All genes are coded on the H-strand, except for one PCG (nad6) and eight tRNAs. All PCGs are initiated with ATG and stopped by five types of stop codons. Our comparative analyses show irregular gene rearrangement between trnT and trnP genes with another similar control region emerging between trnE and trnF genes compared with the ancestral mitochondrial gene order, called “duplicate CR gene order”. The phylogenetic position of P. chinensis and phylogenetic relationships among members of Leiothrichidae are assessed based on complete mitogenomes. Phylogenetic relationships based on Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood methods showed that Garrulax and (Pterorhinus + Ianthocincla) formed a clade. Leiothrix and Liocichla also formed a clade. Our study provides support for the transfer of P. chinensis from Garrulax to Pterorhinus. Our results provide mitochondrial genome data to further understand the mitochondrial genome characteristics and taxonomic status of Leiothrichidae

    Semantic-Enhanced Differentiable Search Index Inspired by Learning Strategies

    Recently, a new paradigm called Differentiable Search Index (DSI) has been proposed for document retrieval, wherein a sequence-to-sequence model is learned to directly map queries to relevant document identifiers. The key idea behind DSI is to fully parameterize traditional ``index-retrieve'' pipelines within a single neural model, by encoding all documents in the corpus into the model parameters. In essence, DSI needs to resolve two major questions: (1) how to assign an identifier to each document, and (2) how to learn the associations between a document and its identifier. In this work, we propose a Semantic-Enhanced DSI model (SE-DSI) motivated by Learning Strategies in the area of Cognitive Psychology. Our approach advances original DSI in two ways: (1) For the document identifier, we take inspiration from Elaboration Strategies in human learning. Specifically, we assign each document an Elaborative Description based on the query generation technique, which is more meaningful than a string of integers in the original DSI; and (2) For the associations between a document and its identifier, we take inspiration from Rehearsal Strategies in human learning. Specifically, we select fine-grained semantic features from a document as Rehearsal Contents to improve document memorization.     Multiple solvers for implicit temperature calculation of heat conduction with the MPS method

    In this study, an implicit algorithm and different solvers are applied to the Moving Particle Semi-Implicit (MPS) method for temperature calculation. The original MPS method uses an explicit method for temperature calculation and is limited by time increment due to diffusion number. In this paper, the heat conduction of plates with Dirichlet boundary condition and Neumann boundary condition is studied. The accuracy of explicit and implicit calculation of plate heat transfer cases are compared. In addition, different solvers are compared. Consequently, it is shown thatthe error of the implicit algorithm is not much different from the original one. And CG is still the better solver,CGS is also a superior solver. The implicit algorithm increases the size of a single time stepby a maximum of 50 times (original diffusion number is 0.2), while the calculation time of a single time step does not increase Substantially, so it has a significant effect on the acceleration of calculation

    The Silk Road agenda of the Pan-Eurasian Experiment (PEEX) program

    The Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road (B&R) aims at facilitating the twenty-first Century economic development of China. However, climate change, air quality and related feedbacks are affecting the successful development of the environment and societies in the B&R geographical domain. The most urgent risks related to the atmospheric system, to the land system and to hydrospheric and cryospheric processes are changing climate - air quality interactions, air pollution, changing monsoon dynamics, land degradation, and the melting of Tibetan Plateau glaciers. A framework is needed in which a science and technology-based approach has the critical mass and expertise to identify the main steps toward solutions and is capable to implement this roadmap. The Pan-Eurasian Experiment (PEEX) program, initiated in 2012, aims to resolve science, technology and sustainability questions in the Northern Eurasian region. PEEX is now identifying its science agenda for the B&R region. One fundamental element of the PEEX research agenda is the availability of comprehensive ground-based observations together with Earth observation data. PEEX complements the recently launched international scientific program called Digital Belt and Road (DBAR). PEEX has expertise to coordinate the ground-based observations and initiate new flagship stations, while DBAR provides a big data platform on Earth observation from China and countries along the Belt and Road region. The DBAR and PEEX have joint interests and synergy expertise on monitoring on ecological environment, urbanization, cultural heritages, coastal zones, and arctic cold regions supporting the sustainable development of the Belt and Road region. In this paper we identify the research themes of the PEEX related Silk Road agenda relevant to China and give an overview of the methodological requirements and present the infrastructure requirements needed to carry out large scale research program.Peer reviewe
