    Phonon spectral function for an interacting electron-phonon system

    Using exact diagonalzation techniques, we study a model of interacting electrons and phonons. The spectral width of the phonons is found to be reduced as the Coulomb interaction U is increased. For a system with two modes per site, we find a transfer of coupling strength from the upper to the lower mode. This transfer is reduced as U is increased. These results give a qualitative explanation of differences between Raman and photoemission estimates of the electron-phonon coupling constants for A3C60 (A= K, Rb).Comment: 4 pages, RevTeX, 2 eps figur

    Electron self-energy in A3C60 (A=K, Rb): Effects of t1u plasmon in GW approximation

    The electron self-energy of the t1u states in A3C60 (A=K, Rb) is calculated using the so-called GW approximation. The calculation is performed within a model which considers the t1u charge carrier plasmon at 0.5 eV and takes into account scattering of the electrons within the t1u band.     Role of surface states in STM spectroscopy of (111) metal surfaces with Kondo adsorbates

    A nearly-free-electron (NFE) model to describe STM spectroscopy of (111) metal surfaces with Kondo impurities is presented. Surface states are found to play an important role giving a larger contribution to the conductance in the case of Cu(111) and Au(111) than Ag(111) surfaces. This difference arises from the farther extension of the Ag(111) surface state into the substrate. The different line shapes observed when Co is adsorbed on different substrates can be explained from the position of the surface band onset relative to the Fermi energy. The lateral dependence of the line shape amplitude is found to be bulk-like for R|| < 4 Amstrongs and surface-like at larger distances, in agreement with experimental data.Comment: 4 pages, 3 eps figure

    Metal-insulator transitions: Influence of lattice structure, Jahn-Teller effect, and Hund's rule coupling

    We study the influence of the lattice structure, the Jahn-Teller effect and the Hund's rule coupling on a metal-insulator transition in AnC60 (A= K, Rb). The difference in lattice structure favors A3C60 (fcc) being a metal and A4C60 (bct) being an insulator, and the coupling to Hg Jahn-Teller phonons favors A4C60 being nonmagnetic. The coupling to Hg (Ag) phonons decreases (increases) the value Uc of the Coulomb integral at which the metal-insulator transition occurs.     Nonlocal density functionals and the linear response of the homogeneous electron gas

    The known and usable truly nonlocal functionals for exchange-correlation energy of the inhomogeneous electron gas are the ADA (average density approximation) and the WDA (weighted density approximation). ADA, by design, yields the correct linear response function of the uniform electron gas. WDA is constructed so that it is exact in the limit of one-electron systems. We derive an expression for the linear response of the uniform gas in the WDA, and calculate it for several flavors of WDA. We then compare the results with the Monte-Carlo data on the exchange-correlation local field correction, and identify the weak points of conventional WDA in the homogeneous limit. We suggest how the WDA can be modified to improve the response function. The resulting approximation is a good one in both opposite limits, and should be useful for practical nonlocal density functional calculations.Comment: 4 pages, two eps figures embedde

    Screening, Coulomb pseudopotential, and superconductivity in alkali-doped Fullerenes

    We study the static screening in a Hubbard-like model using quantum Monte Carlo. We find that the random phase approximation is surprisingly accurate almost up to the Mott transition. We argue that in alkali-doped Fullerenes the Coulomb pseudopotential μ∗\mu^\ast is not very much reduced by retardation effects. Therefore efficient screening is important in reducing μ∗\mu^{\ast} sufficiently to allow for an electron-phonon driven superconductivity.     The influence of anaerobic muscle activity, maturation and season on the flesh quality of farmed turbot

    In order to test seasonal, rearing, maturing and anaerobic muscle activity effect on the flesh quality of turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) a total of 80 farmed turbot from three different strains from reared under natural or continuous light were killed by a percussive blow to the head in November (winter, Icelandic strain), March (spring, Portuguese strain) and June (summer, domesticated strain (France turbot)). To test the effect of anaerobic muscle activity, 10 fish were on each occasion pre rigor filleted, where one fillet was used as a control, while the other fillet was electrically stimulated using a squared 5 Hz, 10 V pulsed DC for 3 min. All pre rigor fillets were measured for pH, weighed, wrapped in aluminum foil and stored in polystyrene boxes with ice. After 7 days of storage the fillets were measured instrumentally for pH, drip loss, colour (CIE L* a* b*) and texture properties such as hardness and shear force, while fillet shrinkage and colour (RBG) were evaluated with computer imaging on photographs from a standard lightbox. Results showed that softness of the flesh was mainly influenced by factors associated with growth, such as season, photoperiod and maturation. Anaerobic muscle activity simulated with electrical stimulation caused an increase in drip loss (<1%) and loss of shear force (<4%), but had no effect on hardness or fillet shrinkage. Computer imaging revealed that muscle contractions related to the electrical stimulus forced out blood from the fillet causing less reddishness for the entire storage period. We conclude that a pH drop upon slaughter associated with anaerobic muscle activity has a minor effect on the flesh quality in the short run, while seasonal/alternatively genetic effects are predominant

    The transition from the adiabatic to the sudden limit in core level photoemission: A model study of a localized system

    We consider core electron photoemission in a localized system, where there is a charge transfer excitation. The system is modelled by three electron levels, one core level and two outer levels. The model has a Coulomb interaction between these levels and the continuum states into which the core electron is emitted. The model is simple enough to allow an exact numerical solution, and with a separable potential an analytic solution. We calculate the ratio r(omega) between the weights of the satellite and the main peak as a function of the photon energy omega. The transition from the adiabatic to the sudden limit takes place for quite small photoelectron kinetic energies. For such small energies, the variation of the dipole matrix element is substantial and described by the energy scale Ed. Without the coupling to the photoelectron, the corresponding ratio r0(omega) is determined by Ed and the satellite excitation energy dE. When the interaction potential with the continuum states is introduced, a new energy scale Es=1/(2Rs^2) enters, where Rs is a length scale of the interaction potential. At threshold there is typically a (weak) constructive interference between intrinsic and extrinsic contributions, and the ratio r(omega)/r0(omega) is larger than its limiting value for large omega. The interference becomes small or weakly destructive for photoelectron energies of the order Es. For larger energies r(omega)/r0(omega) therefore typically has a weak undershoot. If this undershoot is neglected, r(omega)/r0(omega) reaches its limiting value on the energy scale Es.Comment: 18 pages, latex2e, 13 eps figure

    Iron status in 6-y-old children: associations with growth and earlier iron status

DESIGN: In a cross-sectional study, children's body size measurements were recorded and blood samples taken near their sixth birthday. SUBJECTS: A sample of 188 children, randomly selected in two previous studies, was contacted, and 139(74%) agreed to participate. RESULTS: No children had iron deficiency anaemia, one was iron-deficient (serum ferritin (SF) or =15 microg/l (258+/-31%; n=49) (P=0.001). MCV at 2 y predicted weight gain from 2 to 6 y (B+/-s.e.=1.721+/-0.581; P=0.005; adj. R2=0.153) (n=44); also, children with SF or =15 microg/l (n=35) gained 9.6+/-2.8 kg (P=0.007), furthermore a difference was seen in proportional weight gain from 2 to 6 y between children with depleted iron stores at 2 y and not, or 156+/-13 vs 169+/-18% (P=0.038). CONCLUSION: The results suggest that low iron status at 1 and 2 y might lead to slower growth up to 6 y of age. Low iron status at 1 and 2 y and/or slower growth from 1 and 2 y up to 6 y might contribute to worse iron status at 6 y, while faster growth in early childhood is related to lower iron status

    Anti-ferromagnetism, spin-phonon interaction and the local-density approximation in high-TC_C superconductors

    Results from different sets of band calculations for undoped and doped HgBa2_2CuO4_4 show that small changes in localization can lead to very different ground states. The normal LDA results are compared with 'modified' LDA results, in which different linearization energies make the O-p band more localized. The ground states in the normal calculations are far from the anti-ferromagnetic ones, while nearly AFM states are found in the modified calculations. The proximity of an AFM state in the doped system leads to increased λsf\lambda_{sf}, and the modified band structure has favorable conditions for spin-phonon coupling and superconductivity mediated by spin fluctuations.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figs., Accepted in J.
