An HDTV encoder for PALplus transmissions, supplemented with a digital residual signal
This paper discusses the design of a video encoder which will enable PALplus compatible HDTV transmission, by embedding a digital residual component within the standard analogue PALplus television signal. The design strategy includes a 2-D diagonal prefilter, together with a QMF band-splitting filter pair, from which the residual is initially derived. The performance of these filters is reviewed, especially in respect of the errors introduced by aliasing and crosstalk distortion. A number of different digital modulation techniques are then examined for the transmission of the residual signal and a qualitative appraisal of their effectiveness presente

A novel modulation strategy for integrating digital sub-channels within a PAL/PAL plus signal
This paper presents an original methodology which facilitates the modulation of digital signals within the active video portion of a conventional analogue PAL/PALplus television signal. The resultant crosstalk distortion errors which ensue are analysed and a model postulated that enables optimization of a number of important system parameters. It is also shown that applying this model enables a balancing of subjective quality with data-rat

A PALplus-Compatible HDTV Encoder System
The paper presents a new implementation for realising PALplus signals from high-definition television (HDTV) transmissions. A proposed encoder design is introduced, which decomposes the HDTV input into two separate channels, the first of which subsamples the input signal to produce the standard resolution TV signal, and the second derives a digitally compressed residual component. The problems of non-uniform line structure due to the decimation of an interlaced signal are addressed, as are the visible distortions caused by aliasing and cross-talk effects, with appropriate solutions presented. Finally the important issues of colour enhancement and the composition of the compatible signal are briefly discusse
Zooming of states and parameters using a lumping approach including back-translation
Background Systems biology models tend to become large since biological systems often consist of complex networks of interacting components, and since the models usually are developed to reflect various mechanistic assumptions of those networks. Nevertheless, not all aspects of the model are equally interesting in a given setting, and normally there are parts that can be reduced without affecting the relevant model performance. There are many methods for model reduction, but few or none of them allow for a restoration of the details of the original model after the simplified model has been simulated. Results We present a reduction method that allows for such a back-translation from the reduced to the original model. The method is based on lumping of states, and includes a general and formal algorithm for both determining appropriate lumps, and for calculating the analytical back-translation formulas. The lumping makes use of efficient methods from graph-theory and epsilon-decomposition and is derived and exemplified on two published models for fluorescence emission in photosynthesis. The bigger of these models is reduced from 26 to 6 states, with a negligible deviation from the reduced model simulations, both when comparing simulations in the states of the reduced model and when comparing back-translated simulations in the states of the original model. The method is developed in a linear setting, but we exemplify how the same concepts and approaches can be applied to non-linear problems. Importantly, the method automatically provides a reduced model with back-translations. Also, the method is implemented as a part of the systems biology toolbox for matlab, and the matlab scripts for the examples in this paper are available in the supplementary material. Conclusions Our novel lumping methodology allows for both automatic reduction of states using lumping, and for analytical retrieval of the original states and parameters without performing a new simulation. The two models can thus be considered as two degrees of zooming of the same model. This is a conceptually new development of model reduction approaches, which we think will stimulate much further research and will prove to be very useful in future modelling projects.Original Publication:Mikael Sunnaker, Henning Schmidt, Mats Jirstrand and Gunnar Cedersund, Zooming of states and parameters using a lumping approach including back-translation, 2010, BMC SYSTEMS BIOLOGY, (4), 28.http://dx.doi.org/10.1186/1752-0509-4-28Licensee: BioMed Centralhttp://www.biomedcentral.com
The role of investment banking for the German economy: Final report for Deutsche Bank AG, Frankfurt/Main
The aim of this study is to assess the contributions of investment banking to the economy with a particular focus on the German economy. To this end we analyse both the economic benefits and the costs stemming from investment banking. The study focuses on investment banks as this part of banking is particularly relevant for financing companies as well as the development and use of specific products to support the needs of private and professional clients. The assessment of benefits and costs of investment banking has been conducted from a European perspective. Nevertheless there is a focus on the German economy to allow a more detailed analysis of certain aspects as for example the use of derivatives by German companies, the success of M&As in Germany or the effect of securitization on loan supply and GDP in Germany. For comparison purposes other European countries and also the U.S. have been taken into account. The last financial crisis has shown the negative impacts of banks on the financial system and the whole economy. In a study on the contribution of investment banks to systemic risk we quantify the negative side of the investment banking business. In the last part of the study we assess how the effects of regulatory changes on investment banking. All important changes in banking and capital market regulation are taken into account such as Basel III, additional capital requirements for systemically important financial institutions, regulation of OTC derivatives and specific taxes. --
