    Collapsibility and Z-Compactifications of CAT(0) Cube Complexes

    We extend the notion of collapsibility to non-compact complexes and prove collapsibility of locally-finite CAT(0) cube complexes. Namely, we construct such a cube complex XX out of nested convex compact subcomplexes {Ci}i=0\{C_i\}_{i=0}^\infty with the properties that X=i=0CiX=\cup_{i=0}^\infty C_i and CiC_i collapses to Ci1C_{i-1} for all i1i\ge 1. We then define bonding maps rir_i between the compacta CiC_i and construct an inverse sequence yielding the inverse limit space lim{Ci,ri}\varprojlim\{C_i,r_i\}. This will provide a new way of Z-compactifying XX. In particular, the process will yield a new Z-boundary, called the cubical boundary

    The prospect of biogas among small-holder dairy goat farmers in the Uluguru mountains, Tanzania

    Biogas can be a clean cooking alternative where biomass is the dominant source of cooking energy and where feedstock for anaerobic digestion is available. By substituting woody biomass for energy, biogas may reduce local deforestation. Tanzania has more than 15.6 million goats. Dairy goats of different breeds are found in the mid- to high altitudes of the country. Population density has made firewood increasingly scarce and there are few energy alternatives in mountainous areas such as in the Uluguru Mountains. In Mgeta ward, Morogoro region, introduction of Norwegian dairy goats in the 1980s has improved livelihoods in the area. In this study, goat manure was assessed as feedstock for biogas and as fertilizer. Field work among small-holder dairy goat farmers in Mgeta was conducted to measure daily manure production, and to provide a basic model for prediction of the quantity of droppings which may be collected by farmers. Biogas and fertilizer potential from goat manure was compared to cow and pig manure. Buswell’s formula was used to calculate approximate methane yield. The results show that goat manure from Mgeta can yield 167 l∙kg Volatile Solids-1 (VS). Compared with other substrates approximate methane yield can be ranked as pig > guatemala grass > cow > goat. The average goat of 25 kg in Mgeta leaves 61 kg Total Solids (TS) droppings per year. It was estimated that 15 goats∙capita-1 would be required to meet the total cooking energy needs of small-holder households in the study location. N:P:K content in goat manure (TS) is 2:1:1, similar to cow and pig manure. Goat droppings had to be macerated to reduce particle size for anaerobic digestion. Biogas from dairy goats could be combined with the year-round irrigated horticulture production in Mgeta. Vegetable gardens in the slope below the digesters could be fertilized by gravitation with the NH4+-rich bioslurry, to save labour and increase yields.Keywords: Biogas, bioslurry, goat, manure, dairy, fertilizer, Buswell, Morogoro, Tanzani

    Hippocampal overshadowing : exploring the underlying mechanisms

    The aim of the current thesis was to evaluate the underlying mechanisms of hippocampal (HPC) overshadowing. One theory to explain this phenomenon predicts that perceptual representation of an event is stored in non-HPC cortical areas. Following multiple distributed exposure to the same or similar event, this representation becomes stable and the cellular activation patterns can be recalled in the absence of HPC input. Through a series of experiments, the hypothesis that the dysgraunlar layer of the retrosplenial cortex (RSD) fulfill these requirements was tested. Using double in-situ hybridization for the mRNA of immediate-early genes Arc and Homer1a, the cellular activation patterns in HPC subregion CA1 and RSD were evaluated. In addition, temporary inactivation of HPC was used to evaluate cellular activation patterns of a HPC-independent memory in RSD. The results presented here support the idea that cellular activation patterns for may be stored – at least in part – in the RSD

    The role of the hippocampus and post-learning hippocampal activity in long-term consolidation of context memory

    x, 85 leaves : ill. ; 29 cmSutherland, Sparks and Lehmann (2010) proposed a new theory of memory consolidation, termed Distributed Reinstatement Theory (DRT), where the hippocampus (HPC) is needed for initial encoding but some types of memories are established in non-HPC systems through post-learning HPC activity. An evaluation of the current methodology of temporary inactivation was conducted experimentally. By permanently implanting two bilateral guide cannulae in the HPC and infusing ropivacaine cellular activity could be reduced by 97%. Rats were trained in a context-fear paradigm. Six learning episodes distributed across three days made the memory resistant to HPC inactivation while three episodes did not. Blocking post-learning HPC activity following three of six training sessions failed to reduce the rat’s memory of the fearful context. These results fail to support DRT and indicate that one or more memory systems outside the HPC can acquire context memory without HPC post-event activity

    Collision geometry scaling of Au+Au pseudorapidity density from sqrt(s_NN) = 19.6 to 200 GeV

    The centrality dependence of the midrapidity charged particle multiplicity in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 19.6 and 200 GeV is presented. Within a simple model, the fraction of hard (scaling with number of binary collisions) to soft (scaling with number of participant pairs) interactions is consistent with a value of x = 0.13 +/- 0.01(stat) +/- 0.05(syst) at both energies. The experimental results at both energies, scaled by inelastic p(pbar)+p collision data, agree within systematic errors. The ratio of the data was found not to depend on centrality over the studied range and yields a simple linear scale factor of R_(200/19.6) = 2.03 +/- 0.02(stat) +/- 0.05(syst).Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PRC-R
