Canadian Forestry Operations in the Next Century

    Get PDF
What will future Canadian forestry operations resemble? In what context will workers, technicians and forest engineers work? A recent analysis of the technical, social and economic factors the Canadian forest industry faces can help us predict how operations will have to change to adapt to future demands. In this context, the paper focuses on outlining what forestry operations may be like in the next century

A few aspects of transonychial water loss (TOWL): inter-individual, and intra-individual inter-finger, inter-hand and inter-day variabilities, and the influence of nail plate hydration, filing and varnish

The aim of the study was to measure transonychial water loss (TOWL) in order to identify the extent of inter-individual, intra-individual inter-finger, inter-hand, and inter-day variabilities, and the influence of nail wetting, filing and varnishing on TOWL, with a view to determine parameters for the measurement of TOWL and its possible applications. Fingernail and toenail TOWL was measured using the condenser-chamber AquaFlux (Biox) and a specially designed Nail Adaptor supplied by Biox. A wide range of TOWL values (28–75 g/m2 h for fingernails and 26–48 g/m2 h for toenails) were found, with significant inter-individual variability. Intra-individual variability was lower; however, in the same individual, inter-finger, inter-hand/foot and inter-day variabilities were found, as well as a strong correlation between nail plate thickness and TOWL. Wetting the nails, even briefly, resulted in a significant rise in TOWL, which subsequently took much longer to return to control values. Filing the nail plate surface with a pharmaceutical file caused large increases in TOWL, whose profile (with number of filing strokes) was fairly different among individuals. As expected, nail varnish application reduced TOWL; the different extent of TOWL reduction by different varnishes suggests a potential use of TOWL measurements for product comparisons

The Archéologie du monde grec et systèmes d’information team (CNRS – Paris X – Nanterre) presents a survey of the web resources available for Archaeology in two parts, the first dedicated to developments and use of web products, the second to information retrieval. This article is focused on practices: access to research results transposed from a traditional edition to a web site; hybrid diffusion and original contents specially designed for the Internet; retrieval tools usually used, such as Google, distinguished between “portals” designed and developed by archaeological institutions: these portals allow researchers and students to find selected and qualified information. At the end of the text, we present our web sites: Mélanges électroniques en hommage à René Ginouvès, Bibliographie de l’architecture grecque, «Cahiers des thèmes transversaux», Chronique Internet pour l’archéologie

Modern English viewpoint adverbs ending in -wise are highly productive even though they have appeared quite recently in the language (mid 20th century). They limit the referential domain of the predicative relation on which they bear and act as true linking words insofar as they establish a relationship between two parts of a text. They are derived from the same stem as the -wise suffix which, for a long time, has been used to build manner adverbs, and are used to indicate how the sentence to which they are incident is to be envisaged

Marqueurs de tombes d’enfants à Alexandrie : de nouveaux documents peints

    Get PDF
This paper studies two unedited painted plaques from the collection of the museum of the University of alexandria. One shows a young child playing with domestic animals (a dog, a bird), the other a seated woman with a baby and a little girl. The exact provenance of these alexandrine objects is unknown, but they can be set in the context of a series of markers of child-graves dating from the late third or early second century BC. They depict an architectural setting in ‘illusionnist’form; one can identify a covered area, and then another open-air space, enlivened by vegetation, where the dead person is to be found

    Get PDF
The present work deals with the Greek funerary rites and monuments via the most relevant iconographic and written sources (vases, stelai, paintings, laws, epigrams, literature, etc.) dating back to the Classical and Hellenistic times. The interest here is to abide by the specific mode of functioning of each source so that one source should not be perceived merely as the sparring-partner of another, and so as to be able to fully appreciate whatever they are bound to convey. Even though we are first and foremost dealing with Art History, relying on the sources that are most likely to serve our purpose, the present essay is also strewn with additional archaeological examples purporting to reinforce its central thesis; it is intent also on presenting the reader with as accurate a vision as possible. Based on a comparative system, the present essay takes into account the area of the Greek world comprising Greece proper, including Macedonia, Asia Minor, and, to a lesser extent, Southern Italy. It divides into three main parts. The first part focuses above all on rites from the standpoint of the living people who perform them. The second part deals more specifically with the figure of the deceased as such, as well as with the monument marking his/her burial-place. The third part consists of an analysis of the sources so as to point out their categories of contributions while examining whether they might or might not be subsumed by a specific vision of death.NANTERRE-PARIS10-Bib.
