The years 1939 to 1945 offer a privileged vantage point to observe the local elites, as several layers of local representatives were nominated in succession in the wake of the political changes that occurred between 1940 and 1944. The period that ended between 1940 and 1944 sheds light on the elites of the interwar period, while the years 1944-45 provide an insight into the dynamics in place during the 4th and most of the 5th Republic. Focusing on the period ranging from 1939 to 1945, this paper examines the origins of local representatives (town councillors) in Mediterranean dĂ©partements, in an attempt to highlight this regionâs specificities
The « bauxiteurs », so are named the operators running quarries and bauxite mines, located for the most part in the south of France, especially in the Var area. Lacking homogeneity despite their relatively low number, those operators â controlled by large international companies â waited for the Front Populaire to organise themselves in a union. This article looks at the debates that occurred within this union. During the 1940-1944 period, this organisation goes through a rocky time as bauxite â a highly strategic product â is central to a power struggle between German interests and the French. Looming in the background throughout the period, is the pivotal influence of Alais, Forges and Camargues (AFC) â Pechiney â which control the aluminium market in France et which will openly assert its dominance on bauxite at the end of the war. The union of âbauxiteursâ, which appeared at a time requiring a relative solidarity among its members, disappears de facto during the Occupation, while the future of the production is decided, actually, elsewhere
Jean Norton Cruâs work has been much written about since the late twenties. It still is at the heart of contemporary controversies that regard war accounts and the use of literature as a historic source as well as the representations of war. These polemics were triggered by the 1929 publication of a major book entitled Witnesses in which this puritan protestant â who teaches literature in the United States â scrutinizes very meticulously the books, written in French, that have been published since the war and whose topic is war. His criticism aims at restoring what, for him, is the truth of the war; a truth that has been masked by literature and that must be revealed in order to dissuade men from fighting again
The French Resistance was a remarkable phenomenon in the twentieth century: not only did it turn a defeated people into a victorious one, but it also solved the ânational identity crisisâ of the 1930s. The discourses and historiography of the Resistance contributed to building this heroic representation, in particular in the immediate post-War period and during the 1960s when this was the dominant perspective. However, in the 1970s, a new representation gradually emerged and became common place at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s, questioning the attitudes of France and of the French in general, and even throwing suspicion onto the Resistance
Introduction
Contribution of image analysis to the description of enzymatic degradation kinetics for particulate food material
International audienceThe objective of the present work was to relate the physical evolution quantified by image analysis to the chemical transformation of beet pulp particles during enzymatic degradation. Beet pulps were degraded into a torus reactor equipped for visualisation. Pectinolytic and cellulolytic enzymes were used separately or in combination. Two global image analysis techniques were tested to characterise the size distribution of overlapping particles. Granulometric curves were extracted by mathematical morphology and a regularisation dimension was assessed by fractal analysis. Both techniques proved efficient to follow particle size evolution during degradation. When using cellulolytic enzymes alone, no chemical or physical evolution was observed. When using pectinolytic enzymes, a chemical modification occurred without any physical evolution. Particles physically disappeared when both enzymes were used. The chemical and physical evolutions of particles during degradation were interpreted taking into account the current model of molecular arrangement of primary cell walls
CorteXlab: A Cognitive Radio Testbed for Reproducible Experiments
International audienceThe efficiency and potential gain of cognitive radio and more generally opportunistic cooperative communications have been already demonstrated from a theoretical point of view and supported by various simulation results. Beyond these promising results, several questions remain open from a practical point of view. Addressing these issues is not straightforward because deploying complex heterogeneous systems for cooperative scenarios is tedious, time consuming and hardly reproducible. We propose to make a step in this direction by offering a new ex-perimental facility, called CorteXlab, that allows complex multi-node cognitive radio scenarios deployment from anywhere in the world. Our objective is neither to design new software defined radio (SDR) nodes nor to propose a new software framework, but rather to provide a comprehensive access to a large set of high performance SDR nodes. The CorteXlab facility offers a 167 m 2 electromagnetically (EM) shielded room and integrates a set of 24 universal software radio peripherals (USRPs) from National Instruments, 18 PicoSDR nodes from Nutaq and 42 IoT-Lab wireless sensor nodes from Hikob. CorteXlab is built upon the foundations of the SensLAB testbed and also exploits the free and open-source toolkit GNU Radio. Automation in scenario deployment, experiment start, stop and results collection is performed by an experiment controller, called Minus. CorteXlab is in its final stages of development and is already capable of running specific test scenarios. In this contribution, we show that CorteXlab is able to easily cope with the usual issues faced by other testbeds providing a reproducible experiment environment for CR experimentation
