A Pilot Study on the Effectiveness of a Heat-Pain Stimulus to induce Pain, Anxiety, and Fear

While the majority of previous studies assessing pain-related variables in psychopaths used electric shocks, little is known about the effectiveness of alternative pain-inducing methods to increase emotional responses such as fear and anxiety. A small sample of healthy undergraduate men (N = 15) was recruited to assess the effectiveness of a heat stimulus to induce pain in an immediate versus delayed punishment paradigm. Although pain catastrophizing, anxiety, and threat of pain did not increase throughout the experiment, participants experienced a significant increase of fear of pain and pain intensity, indicating that the heat stimulus was effective in inducing pain. Furthermore, subjects were slower in initiating the pain stimulus during the first five trials, but no time difference was found during the 15 remaining trials. No correlation was found between psychopathic traits and pain-related variables, with the exception of inconsistent results within the Fearless Dominance factor. Findings are discussed in terms of improvement for a larger scale study involving psychopathic individuals

La participation d'un enseignant stagiaire à la communauté de pratique enseignante lue au travers d'une théorie de l'action collective : éléments théoriques et premiers résultats.

Atelier 28 : Formation des enseignants en général.Cette étude de cas longitudinale s'appuie sur une relecture du concept de " participation " à une communauté de pratique (Lave & Wenger, 1991) par une théorie de l'apprentissage (Nelson, 2008) et de l'action collective (Wittgenstein, 1996). La participation à la communauté est ici davantage envisagée en termes de jeux de langage et de suivi de règles que de négociation de significations entre les acteurs de la communauté. A partir de cette relecture, il s'agit de décrire la trajectoire de participation d'un enseignant stagiaire à la communauté de pratique enseignante, d'identifier l'activité de formation du/(des) formateur(s) pouvant être rattachée à chaque modalité de participation et de préciser les conséquences de cette participation en termes de formation professionnelle pour l'enseignant stagiaire

Atteintes ventriculaires droites liées aux laminopathies : prévalence et pronostic dans une cohorte de 138 patients

Introduction: Laminopathies are rare genetic diseases, with various clinical manifestations. Cardiac involvement may include conduction disorders, rhythm disorders and cardiomyopathy with left ventricular dysfunction. Right ventricular dysfunction is correlated with a poor prognosis in other cardiopathies. Our aim is to study the prevalence of right ventricular involvement in laminopathies and the influence on the outcome. Methods and Results: We followed a 138 patients cohort who carried LMNA gene mutations. 18 patients (13%) presented right ventricular systolic dysfunction with clinical heart failure, among which 9 (6.5%) had no associated left ventricular dysfunction. Right ventricular involvement was associated with the presence of truncating mutations (44% vs 22%, p = 0.04) and extracardiac manifestations (94.4% vs 72.5%, p=0.04); Follow-up revealed more deaths (44% vs 17%, p <0.001), end-stage heart failure (56% vs 11%, p<0.001), non-sustained ventricular tachycardia (50% vs 18%, p <0.001), sustained ventricular tachycardia (56% vs. 17%, p<0.001), supraventricular tachycardias (94% vs 49%, p <0.001), and sinus dysfunction (33% vs. 7%, p<0.001). Conclusion: Right ventricular dysfunction may occur in laminopathies, even without left ventricular dysfunction, and is associated with a poor prognosis and a high risk of rapid evolution to end-stage heart failure. Conduction disorders and arrhythmias were particularly frequent. Lamin mutation carriers should have a regular evaluation of their right ventricular function.Objectifs : Les laminopathies sont des maladies génétiques rares, regroupant des phénotypes divers. Les atteintes cardiaques connues se caractérisent par des troubles conductifs, des troubles du rythme, et des cardiomyopathies avec dysfonction ventriculaire gauche. Dans la plupart des autres cardiopathies, une atteinte ventriculaire droite est de mauvais pronostic. Nous avons voulu étudier la prévalence d’une atteinte ventriculaire droite dans les laminopathies et son impact sur le pronostic. Méthodes et résultats : Nous avons suivi une cohorte de 138 patients porteurs de mutations dans le gène LMNA. Une dysfonction systolique et une insuffisance cardiaque droite étaient présentes chez 18 patients (13%), dont 9 (6.5%) sans dysfonction gauche associée. Une atteinte ventriculaire droite était associée à la présence de mutations tronquantes (44% vs 22%, p=0,04) et d’une atteinte extracardiaque de la laminopathie (94,4% vs 72,5%, p=0,04), et au cours du suivi à significativement plus de décès (44% vs 17%, p<0,001), d’insuffisance cardiaque terminale (56% vs 11%, p<0,001), de tachycardies ventriculaires non soutenues (50% vs 18%, p<0,001) et soutenues (56% vs 17%, p<0,001), de tachycardies supraventriculaires (94% vs 49%, p<0,001), et de dysfonction sinusale (33% vs 7%, p<0,001). Conclusion : les laminopathies peuvent se compliquer d’une dysfonction ventriculaire droite, y compris sans atteinte ventriculaire gauche associée. Celle-ci est de mauvais pronostic avec un haut risque d’évolution rapide vers une insuffisance cardiaque terminale. Elle se complique fréquemment de troubles du rythme et de conduction. Elle doit être dépistée systématiquement lors du suivi de ces patients

Effects of the nature of the doping salt and of the thermal pre-treatment and sintering temperature on spark plasma sintering of transparent alumina

A slurry of a-Al2O3 was doped with Mg, Zr and La nitrates or chlorides, in various amounts in the range 150-500 wt ppm and then freeze-dried to produce nanosized doped powder (~150 nm). The powder was sintered by SPS to yield transparent polycrystalline alpha alumina. The influence of the nature of the doping element and the starting salt, the thermal treatment before sintering and the sintering emperature on the transparency of the ceramics were investigated. The transparency of the ceramics of nanosized Al2O3 was shown to depend mainly on the way the powder was prepared, the nature of the doping salt also had an effect. Finally, a high real inline transmittance, reaching 48.1% was achieved after optimization

Geometric Modelling and Deformation for Shape Optimization of Ship Hulls and Appendages

International audienceThe precise control of geometric models plays an important role in many domains such as computer-aided geometric design and numerical simulation. For shape optimization in computational fluid dynamics (CFD), the choice of control parameters and the way to deform a shape are critical.In this article, we describe a skeleton-based representation of shapes adapted for CFD simulation and automatic shape optimization. Instead of using the control points of a classic B-spline representation, we control the geometry in terms of architectural parameters. We assure valid shapeswith a strong shape consistency control. Deformations of the geometry are performed by solving optimization problems on the skeleton. Finally, a surface reconstruction method is proposed to evaluate the shape's performances with CFD solvers. We illustrate the approach on two problems: thefoil of an AC45 racing sail boat and the bulbous bow of a fishing trawler. For each case, we obtained a set of shape deformations and then we evaluated and analyzed the performances of the different shapes with CFD computations
