    Quantifying Model Complexity via Functional Decomposition for Better Post-Hoc Interpretability

    Post-hoc model-agnostic interpretation methods such as partial dependence plots can be employed to interpret complex machine learning models. While these interpretation methods can be applied regardless of model complexity, they can produce misleading and verbose results if the model is too complex, especially w.r.t. feature interactions. To quantify the complexity of arbitrary machine learning models, we propose model-agnostic complexity measures based on functional decomposition: number of features used, interaction strength and main effect complexity. We show that post-hoc interpretation of models that minimize the three measures is more reliable and compact. Furthermore, we demonstrate the application of these measures in a multi-objective optimization approach which simultaneously minimizes loss and complexity

    Advanced European Re-Entry System Based on Inflatable Heat Shields EFESTO project overview: system and mission design and technology roadmap

    European Union H2020 EFESTO project is coordinated by DEIMOS Space with the end goals of improving the European TRL of Inflatable Heat Shields for re-entry vehicles from 3 to 4/5 and pave the way to In-Orbit Demonstration that can further raise the TRL to 6. This paper presents the project objectives and provides a general overview of the latest advancements, promoting the relevance of the EFESTO know-how in the frame of a European re-entry technology roadmap. The system, aerodynamic and mission design of two Hypersonic Inflatable Aerodynamic Decelerator use case scenarios, the AVUM VEGA stage recovery and a high-mass Mars exploration EDL mission, have been selected for deriving requirements and constraints to be injected in the EFESTO ground testing phase. The focus of this phase was on the aerothermal verification of the Flexible-Thermal Protection System in the DLR Arcjet facility and the analysis of the mechanical properties of the Inflatable Structure exploiting a manufactured 1:2 demonstrator, both representing key aspects of this peculiar and innovative technology

    Computing the first eigenpair of the p-Laplacian via inverse iteration of sublinear supersolutions

    We introduce an iterative method for computing the first eigenpair (λp,ep)(\lambda_{p},e_{p}) for the pp-Laplacian operator with homogeneous Dirichlet data as the limit of (μq,uq)(\mu_{q,}u_{q}) as q→p−q\rightarrow p^{-}, where uqu_{q} is the positive solution of the sublinear Lane-Emden equation −Δpuq=μquqq−1-\Delta_{p}u_{q}=\mu_{q}u_{q}^{q-1} with same boundary data. The method is shown to work for any smooth, bounded domain. Solutions to the Lane-Emden problem are obtained through inverse iteration of a super-solution which is derived from the solution to the torsional creep problem. Convergence of uqu_{q} to epe_{p} is in the C1C^{1}-norm and the rate of convergence of μq\mu_{q} to λp\lambda_{p} is at least O(p−q)O(p-q).     Optimized 3D co-registration of ultra-low-field and high-field magnetic resonance images

    The prototypes of ultra-low-field (ULF) MRI scanners developed in recent years represent new, innovative, cost-effective and safer systems, which are suitable to be integrated in multi-modal (Magnetoencephalography and MRI) devices. Integrated ULF-MRI and MEG scanners could represent an ideal solution to obtain functional (MEG) and anatomical (ULF MRI) information in the same environment, without errors that may limit source reconstruction accuracy. However, the low resolution and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of ULF images, as well as their limited coverage, do not generally allow for the construction of an accurate individual volume conductor model suitable for MEG localization. Thus, for practical usage, a high-field (HF) MRI image is also acquired, and the HF-MRI images are co-registered to the ULF-MRI ones. We address here this issue through an optimized pipeline (SWIM-Sliding WIndow grouping supporting Mutual information). The co-registration is performed by an affine transformation, the parameters of which are estimated using Normalized Mutual Information as the cost function, and Adaptive Simulated Annealing as the minimization algorithm. The sub-voxel resolution of the ULF images is handled by a sliding-window approach applying multiple grouping strategies to down-sample HF MRI to the ULF-MRI resolution. The pipeline has been tested on phantom and real data from different ULF-MRI devices, and comparison with well-known toolboxes for fMRI analysis has been performed. Our pipeline always outperformed the fMRI toolboxes (FSL and SPM). The HF-ULF MRI co-registration obtained by means of our pipeline could lead to an effective integration of ULF MRI with MEG, with the aim of improving localization accuracy, but also to help exploit ULF MRI in tumor imaging

    Vaginal Colonization with Staphylococcus aureus in Healthy Women: A Review of Four Studies

    Four studies assessed the frequency of vaginal Staphylococcus aureus colonization in healthy women and associated risk factors. An association was found between S. aureus vaginal colonization and colonization at the labia minora and the anterior nares. Significant risk factors associated with an increased risk of vaginal S. aureus in at least one study were a history of genital herpes simplex infection, insertion of tampons without an applicator, and the use of Rely (Procter & Gamble) tampons. The use of systemic antibiotics within 2 weeks of the vaginal culture decreased the risk of recovery of S. aureus. The overall frequency of vaginal S. aureus in the 808 women in the four studies was 9.2%

    Kupffer Cells Hasten Resolution of Liver Immunopathology in Mouse Models of Viral Hepatitis

    Kupffer cells (KCs) are widely considered important contributors to liver injury during viral hepatitis due to their pro-inflammatory activity. Herein we utilized hepatitis B virus (HBV)-replication competent transgenic mice and wild-type mice infected with a hepatotropic adenovirus to demonstrate that KCs do not directly induce hepatocellular injury nor do they affect the pathogenic potential of virus-specific CD8 T cells. Instead, KCs limit the severity of liver immunopathology. Mechanistically, our results are most compatible with the hypothesis that KCs contain liver immunopathology by removing apoptotic hepatocytes in a manner largely dependent on scavenger receptors. Apoptotic hepatocytes not readily removed by KCs become secondarily necrotic and release high-mobility group box 1 (HMGB-1) protein, promoting organ infiltration by inflammatory cells, particularly neutrophils. Overall, these results indicate that KCs resolve rather than worsen liver immunopathology

    In this paper, we consider a new coupled PDE model for image restoration. Both the image and the edge variables are incorporated by coupling them into two different PDEs. It is shown that the initial-boundary value problem has global in time dissipative solutions (in a sense going back to P.-L. Lions), and several properties of these solutions are established. This is a rough draft, and the final version of the paper will contain a modelling part and numerical experiments
