    Geometric phases for wave packets in a uniform magnetic field

    A wave packet of a charged particle always make cyclic circular motion in a uniform magnetic field, just like a classical particle. The nonadiabatic geometric phase for an arbitrary wave packet can be expressed in terms of the mean value of a number operator. For a large class of wave packets, the geometric phase is proportional to the magnetic flux encircled by the orbit of the wave packet.     Federated Learning Attacks and Defenses: A Survey

    In terms of artificial intelligence, there are several security and privacy deficiencies in the traditional centralized training methods of machine learning models by a server. To address this limitation, federated learning (FL) has been proposed and is known for breaking down ``data silos" and protecting the privacy of users. However, FL has not yet gained popularity in the industry, mainly due to its security, privacy, and high cost of communication. For the purpose of advancing the research in this field, building a robust FL system, and realizing the wide application of FL, this paper sorts out the possible attacks and corresponding defenses of the current FL system systematically. Firstly, this paper briefly introduces the basic workflow of FL and related knowledge of attacks and defenses. It reviews a great deal of research about privacy theft and malicious attacks that have been studied in recent years. Most importantly, in view of the current three classification criteria, namely the three stages of machine learning, the three different roles in federated learning, and the CIA (Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability) guidelines on privacy protection, we divide attack approaches into two categories according to the training stage and the prediction stage in machine learning. Furthermore, we also identify the CIA property violated for each attack method and potential attack role. Various defense mechanisms are then analyzed separately from the level of privacy and security. Finally, we summarize the possible challenges in the application of FL from the aspect of attacks and defenses and discuss the future development direction of FL systems.     Geometric phases for neutral and charged particles in a time-dependent magnetic field

    It is well known that any cyclic solution of a spin 1/2 neutral particle moving in an arbitrary magnetic field has a nonadiabatic geometric phase proportional to the solid angle subtended by the trace of the spin. For neutral particles with higher spin, this is true for cyclic solutions with special initial conditions. For more general cyclic solutions, however, this does not hold. As an example, we consider the most general solutions of such particles moving in a rotating magnetic field. If the parameters of the system are appropriately chosen, all solutions are cyclic. The nonadiabatic geometric phase and the solid angle are both calculated explicitly. It turns out that the nonadiabatic geometric phase contains an extra term in addition to the one proportional to the solid angle. The extra term vanishes automatically for spin 1/2. For higher spin, however, it depends on the initial condition. We also consider the valence electron of an alkaline atom. For cyclic solutions with special initial conditions in an arbitrary strong magnetic field, we prove that the nonadiabatic geometric phase is a linear combination of the two solid angles subtended by the traces of the orbit and spin angular momenta. For more general cyclic solutions in a strong rotating magnetic field, the nonadiabatic geometric phase also contains extra terms in addition to the linear combination.Comment: revtex, 18 pages, no figur

    Time evolution, cyclic solutions and geometric phases for general spin in an arbitrarily varying magnetic field

    A neutral particle with general spin and magnetic moment moving in an arbitrarily varying magnetic field is studied. The time evolution operator for the Schr\"odinger equation can be obtained if one can find a unit vector that satisfies the equation obeyed by the mean of the spin operator. There exist at least 2s+12s+1 cyclic solutions in any time interval. Some particular time interval may exist in which all solutions are cyclic. The nonadiabatic geometric phase for cyclic solutions generally contains extra terms in addition to the familiar one that is proportional to the solid angle subtended by the closed trace of the spin vector.Comment: revtex4, 8 pages, no figur

    Clonidine Improved Laboratory-Measured Decision-Making Performance in Abstinent Heroin Addicts

    BACKGROUND: Impulsivity refers to a wide spectrum of actions characterized by quick and nonplanned reactions to external and internal stimuli, without taking into account the possible negative consequences for the individual or others, and decision-making is one of the biologically dissociated impulsive behaviors. Changes in impulsivity may be associated with norepinephrine. Various populations of drug addicts all performed impulsive decision making, which is a key risk factor in drug dependence and relapse. The present study investigated the effects of clonidine, which decreased norepinephrine release through presynaptic alpha-2 receptor activation, on the impaired decision-making performance in abstinent heroin addicts. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Decision-making performance was assessed using the original version of Iowa Gambling Task (IGT). Both heroin addicts and normal controls were randomly assigned to three groups receiving clonidine, 0, 75 µg or 150 µg orally under double blind conditions. Psychiatric symptoms, including anxiety, depression and impulsivity, were rated on standardized scales. Heroin addicts reported higher scores on the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale and exhibited impaired decision-making on the IGT. A single high-dose of clonidine improved the decision-making performance in heroin addicts. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Our results suggest clonidine may have a potential therapeutic role in heroin addicts by improving the impaired impulsive decision-making. The current findings have important implications for behavioral and pharmacological interventions targeting decision-making in heroin addiction

    Study of the Effect of Drying and Wetting Cycles and Water Content on the Shear Characteristics of Tailing Sands

    The mechanical characteristics of tailing sands have an important impact on the safety and stability of the tailing dams. Fully understanding the effect of drying and wetting cycles (DWC) and water content on the characteristics of tailing sands is urgently needed. In this study, direct shear tests were first carried out to analyze the effect of DWC and water content on the macroscopic mechanical characteristics of tailing sands. Then, the mesoscopic mechanical behavior of tailing sands with different water contents under the action of DWC was studied by using PFC2D particle flow software. The results showed that the effect of DWC on the shear properties of tailing sands is more pronounced than water content. The cohesive force and the internal friction angle increase first and then decrease with the increasing water content. With the increasing number of DWC, the cohesive force and the internal friction angle all decreased to varying degrees. The results of the mesoscopic mechanical analysis indicated that after experiencing the DWC, the force chain of the sample gradually thickens to form a coarse force chain network area, and the number of cracks inside the sample is significantly larger than that of the sample that has not experienced the DWC. The results of this study are of great significance for understanding the macroscopic and mesoscopic shear failure mechanism of tailing sands under the effects of DWCs and water content

    Ring structure amino acids affect the suppressor activity of melon aphid-borne yellows virus P0 protein

    AbstractMelon aphid-borne yellows virus (MABYV) is a newly identified polerovirus occurring in China. Here, we demonstrate that the MABYV encoded P0 (P0MA) protein is a strong suppressor of post-transcriptional gene silencing (PTGS) with activity comparable to tobacco etch virus (TEV) HC-Pro. In addition we have shown that the LP F-box motif present at the N-terminus of P0MA is required for suppressor activity. Detailed mutational analyses on P0MA revealed that changing the conserved Trp 212 with non-ring structured amino acids altered silencing suppressor functions. Ala substitutions at positions 12 and 211 for Phe had no effect on P0 suppression-activity, whereas Arg and Glu substitutions had greatly decreased suppressor activity. Furthermore, substitutions targeting Phe at position 30 also resulted in reduced P0 suppression-activity. Altogether, these results suggest that ring structured Trp/Phe residues in P0 have important roles in suppressor activity
