Topical timolol for treatment of persistent granulation tissue in the setting of severe hidradenitis suppurativa
Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a potentially debilitating dermatological disease that negatively impacts patients' quality of life. Severe cases can be further complicated by persistent granulation tissue at the ostia of sinus tracts, which may prove recalcitrant to standard interventions. Herein we report such a case in which a patient experienced significant improvement from severe HS but was left with persistent granulation tissue that complicated his course of recovery. When standard interventions failed, we elected to begin treatment with topical timolol. After three months, the majority of the granulation tissue had regressed and has remained quiescent after 12 months of follow up. The patient has tolerated the treatment well and continues to use topical timolol daily as needed for flares. We believe that topical timolol can provide a practical and painless alternative to current invasive and expensive therapies for persistent granulation tissue associated with severe HS
The Localization of GABA-Like Immunoreactivity in the Optic Lobe Neuropils and Optic Tracts of the Cockroach Leucophaea Maderae
Gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a prominent neurotransmitter found in both vertebrates and invertebrates. The action of GABA has been accepted to be inhibitory in nature, but recent evidence suggests it is both inhibitory and excitatory, depending upon time of day. The amount of GABA measured in the brain of the cockroach Leucophaea maderae was discovered to fluctuate in a circadian pattern similar to the pattern of electrical output measured from the optic nerve in L. maderae. Considering the circadian oscillator for L. maderae has been localized to the optic lobes of the brain, the discovery of GABA-like immunoreactivity in the optic lobes and optic tract could be an important first step in localizing cells that comprise the circadian oscillator(s) that control the temporal pattern of many physiological, biochemical and behavioral activities, such as locomotor activity and metabolism. Through the use of monoclonal antibodies and the enzyme alkaline phosphatase, GABA-like immunoreactivity has been discovered associated with neuropils of the optic lobes (lamina, medulla, lobula) and in the optic tract of the cockroach L. maderae. The localization of GABA-like immunoreactivity in the optic lobes and tract of L. maderae is consistent with findings in other invertebrates, including other species of cockroaches
Development of switchgrass as a viable agricultural commodity for farmers in southern Iowa
The Chariton Valley Biomass project involves transforming switchgrass into a cash energy crop for southern Iowa farmers. The Leopold Center provided funding for communication and education activities connected with the project
Evolutionary analysis of the genomic region of FOXP3 in vertebrates
The Human FOXP3 gene plays a role in immunosuppression, which includes the suppression of the maternal immune system to allow the growth of a semi-foreign fetus inside her uterus. This has lead scientists to hypothesize that FOXP3 gene played a crucial role in the development of viviparous species. FOXP3 is highly conserved across Eutherian mammals, but the degree of conservation in other viviparous species has not been investigated. This study found that FOXP3 orthologs are much less highly conserved in aplacental species and may be more closely related to other members of the FOXP gene family than to the FOXP3 found in mammals. Through the creation of phylogenetic trees, I found that all of the members of the Forkhead Box Protein Family were named correctly, but FOXP3 had the highest degree of substitutions, which may explain its relatively novel function in immunosuppression
Nitrous oxide as a substitute for sulfur hexafluoride in the ANSI/ASHRAE 110 Method of hood performance evaluation
Thesis (S.B.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, 2011.Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (p. 39-40).The ANSI/ASHRAE 110 Method is the standard test for laboratory hood containment performance. Sulfur hexafluoride is specified as the gas most suitable for this test and is most commonly used. Sulfur hexafluoride use has potential negative environmental repercussions as it is a potent greenhouse gas with a global warming potential 22,800 times greater per mass than CO₂. The purpose of this study is to evaluate nitrous oxide, a much less environmentally destructive tracer gas, as a potential substitute in the ANSI/ASHRAE 110 Method. In accordance with ANSI standards, flow visualization, face velocity, and tracer gas tests were performed on numerous laboratory hoods of varying design. A mannequin was positioned in front of the center of the hood, and a MIRAN SapphlRe was used to measure the presence of each tracer gas. Direct comparisons of the concentrations of the two gases were dominated by a few high concentrations. For this reason, concentrations of both gases were log1O-transformed for statistical analyses. Laboratory hood dimensions and properties were found to affect the relationship between the gases. The hood area of opening and sash height were found to significantly (p<0.001) affect logjo(SF₆/ N₂O). Average face velocity also significantly (p<0.025) affected the log ratio. Neither gas was an adequate indicator of the behavior of the other. The linear best fit of the logs of the concentration ratio had a slope of 0.858, a y-intercept of 0.434, and an R² of 35.9% indicating a poor correlation. For N₂O to qualify as a substitute for SF6 there would need to be a strong correlation between gas concentrations that was consistent independently of hood conditions. This condition was not met. Nitrous oxide was found to not be a suitable substitute for sulfur hexafluoride in the ANSI/ASHRAE 110 Method.by Eric J. Guffey.S.B
Rockwell Kent’s Villagers and Village Children The Importance of Provenance in Art
The provenance of the Rockwell Kent paintings, Villagers and Village Children, currently housed at the Noel Wien
Library in Fairbanks, Alaska, is under question. Scott Ferris, a specialist on Kent, visited the Library’s Kent Collection in
1993, and relayed notes on Kent’s works. Ferris believes they may be from the 1930’s, when Kent traveled to Greenland, rather than 1947 (Villagers) and 1962 (Village Children). Jake Wien, an independent curator and author on Kent, believes the dates on the paintings to be correct. By researching these paintings, I will show how the provenance can effect the historical value, as well as the financial value in works of art
Females with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
The American Speech-Language and Hearing Association (ASHA) states that social communication deficits can be present alongside a wide variety of diagnoses and are characterized by the difficulties in the usage of language in social contexts, which can affect language expression and comprehension ( Autism spectrum disorder, n.d.). Research reveals that males are 4 times more likely to receive a diagnosis of ASD compared to females (Fletcher, 2022). The criteria for diagnosis are viewed in terms based on a male\u27s inability to present appropriate social communication and pragmatic skills. This oftentimes leads to missed or inaccurate diagnoses for females. The literature reviewed will provide research on differences between males and females- their social communication deficits, how those deficits are perceived by others, and how this impacts the diagnosis itself. By recognizing the unique characteristic differences between the two genders, females will have more opportunity for an accurate and timely diagnosis, along with treatment options best suitable for them.https://griffinshare.fontbonne.edu/slp-posters-2023/1022/thumbnail.jp
