The use of earthworm flour for lactic acid biomass production
The potential use of Californian red earthworm flour as a nitrogen source for the production of lactic biomass was assessed. Three fermentation substrates, earthworm flour (EF), earthworm flour + yeast extract (EF + YE) and a commercial substrate MRS (control) were used. The substrates were formulated using 60 g L-1 of glucose as the carbon source and 34 gL-1 of earthworm flour as the nitrogen source. Weissella confusa was used as lactic acid bacterium. Nine batch fermentations were performed at 32°C and 100 rpm for 4 h, and the kinetics of the biomass concentration, lactic acid concentration and substrate consumption were compared. No differences were observed in the biomass concentration of the EF and EF + YE substrates, and final concentrations of 1.36 and 1.47 g L-1 were obtained, respectively. The lactic acid concentration did not differ significantly between EF + YE and the commercial substrate, and values of 4.79 and 4.33 g L-1 were obtained, respectively. These results suggest that earthworm flour can be a low-cost alternative for lactic acid biomass production. Keywords: Earthworm flour, Weissella confusa, lactic acid bacteriaAfrican Journal of Biotechnology Vol. 12(40), pp. 5962-596

Antimicrobial activity against Xanthomonas albilineans and fermentation kinetics of a lactic acid bacterium isolated from the sugar cane crop
Xanthomonas albilineans is a pathogen that causes leaf scald disease
in sugarcane ( Saccharum officinarum L.) This disease causes the
death of seedlings and consequently results in economic losses for
sugarcane growers. The objective of this work was to isolate a lactic
acid bacterium with antimicrobial activity against X. albilineans from
sugarcane crops and to evaluate its antimicrobial activity and its
lactic acid production kinetics, biomass yield, and substrate
consumption in three different fermentation substrates. To isolate the
lactic acid bacterium, samples were collected from different parts of
infected and non-infected sugarcane plants of var. CC85-92. Lactococcus
lactis ssp. lactis was isolated from the leaves of healthy crops, and
showed in vitro antimicrobial activity against the pathogen. Batch
fermentations of this isolate (at 32 °C, agitation of 100 rpm, and
pH 6) were performed using a commercial substrate (MRS), a commercial
substrate supplemented with glucose (MRSG), and a substrate produced
from agricultural crop residues (ACR). The highest antimicrobial
activity was 5.83 mm in the ACR substrate after 6 h of fermentation.
The maximum biomass production of 3.37 g L-1 and the maximum lactic
acid production of 12.1 g L-1 were obtained in the MRSG substrate. The
lactic acid production did not show any significant differences between
the substrates. This lactic acid bacterium showed antimicrobial
activity against X. albilineans and is thus a biological alternative
for the control of leaf scald disease in sugarcane

Chemical characterization of the pulp, peel and seeds of cocona (Solanum sessiliflorum Dunal)
Summary The chemical characterization of the pulp, peel and seeds of cocona (Solanum sessiliflorum Dunal) was determined. In artisanal fruit processing, 26.3% of peel and 9.7% of seeds were obtained. The seeds showed a high potential for the development of value-added products because of their dry matter contents (23.46%) as follows: carbohydrate (69.37% dry basis (d.b.)), nitrogen (3.18 g/100 g of seed d.b.), K (0.023 g/100 g of seed d.b.), Fe (0.0185 g/100 g of seed d.b.) and dietary fiber (21.27 g/100 g of seed d.b.). The carbohydrate, dietary fibre and mineral contents of the pulp, peel and seeds also highlighted the agroindustrial potential of the fruit in that these constituents could be used to develop functional foods, food additives, preparations for functional diets and dietary supplements

Recuadro 2 - Definición de índices de referencia: introducción de expectativas neutrales en el proceso de optimizaciónThe Colombian Constitution and Law 31/1992 (Article 14) give Banco de la República a mandate to manage Colombia’s foreign reserves, in addition to stipulating the criteria on managing these reserves, which are safety, liquidity and return. The purpose of this report is to explain how Colombia’s foreign reserves are managed. As of December 2020, net foreign reserves amounted to USD 59,031.
The report begins with a description of the main concepts associated with foreign reserves and outlines the framework on which their management by the Bank is based. It then describes, in detail, the policy for managing these reserves, as well as the fundamental aspects of its operation. The report ends with a description of the current state of the country’s foreign reserves.

THE FISCAL REVIEWER AND THE EVALUATION OF INTERNAL CONTROL
