Taphonomic phenomenon of ancient hair from Glacial Beringia:perspectives for palaeoecological reconstructions

An accumulation of mammoth hair, discovered in the Bol'shaya Chukochya River valley (northeast Yakutia, Russia), was found to contain remains of terrestrial and aquatic organisms, including plants, insects, crustaceans, birds and mammals. Radiocarbon dating indicated that this post-mortem taphocoenosis represented multiple time periods. The mammoth hair was dated to older than 45 ka BP, the plants were dated to 12 750 +/- 50 a BP (which corresponds to a shift in the environmental conditions and landscapes during the formation of thermokarst in northeastern Russia) and the bird feathers were dated to 4115 +/- 40 a BP. A scenario of the formation of this fossil assemblage is proposed, covering the MIS 3-1 time range. The hair also yielded various Arctic branchiopod crustaceans, which inhabit shallow temporary water bodies and therefore are important for reconstruction of palaeoenvironments. The cladoceran subgenus Daphnia (Ctenodaphnia), currently absent from the Asian part of Beringia, is reported from this region for the first time. The study demonstrates that the discovered permafrostpreserved hair is a unique repository of Ice Age organisms.</p

The review presents the results of diagnostic imaging techniques for evaluation of distractional regenerate bone starting from classical polypositional radiography to modern imaging modalities such as magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography. There are described the modifications of the known techniques for evaluation of regeneration bone with quantitative and qualitative analysis, the opinions of different authors about possibilities and problems of imaging practices. There are presented the problems and goals for more effective evaluation of new bone at different stages of limb lengthening with the focus on a wider application of modern imaging modalities at medical institutions. The review is based on dissertation work of K. A. Diachkov «Diagnostic imaging for detection of the rules of distractional regenerate bone formation and bone quality during limb lengthening». Literature review was performed using database of PubMed, Medline, Embase 12 Russian journals on traumatology and orthopaedics, diagnostic imaging 2007–2016. All articles on evaluation of distractional bone regeneration were reviewed.

Analogue peptides for the immunotherapy of human acute myeloid leukemia

Accepted manuscript. The final publication is available at: http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs00262-015-1762-9The use of peptide vaccines, enhanced by adjuvants, has shown some efficacy in clinical trials. However, responses are often short-lived and rarely induce notable memory responses. The reason is that self-antigens have already been presented to the immune system as the tumor develops, leading to tolerance or some degree of host tumor cell destruction. To try to break tolerance against self-antigens, one of the methods employed has been to modify peptides at the anchor residues to enhance their ability to bind major histocompatibility complex molecules, extending their exposure to the T-cell receptor. These modified or analogue peptides have been investigated as stimulators of the immune system in patients with different cancers with variable but sometimes notable success. In this review we describe the background and recent developments in the use of analogue peptides for the immunotherapy of acute myeloid leukemia describing knowledge useful for the application of analogue peptide treatments for other malignancies

Food addiction and weight in students with high academic performance

Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyse the relationships between food addiction (FA), anthropometric characteristics and academic performance. Design: The average age (sd) of the participants was 17·5 (sd 2·7) years (64·1 % female). Each study participant indicated their sex, height, weight and academic performance and completed the Yale Food Addiction Scale. Setting: Syktyvkar, Kirov, Tyumen, Yekaterinburg, Russia; Aizawl, India. Participants: The study involved 3426 people. Results: FA was found in 8·7 % of participants from Russia and 14·6 % from India. In schoolchildren but not in university students, high academic performance was associated with a higher incidence rate of FA detection (OR = 1·16, 95 % CI 1·07, 1·26) and a lower BMI (OR = 0·72, 95 % CI 0·56, 0·94). Conclusions: These data showed an increased incidence rate of FA detection in adolescents with high academic performance. © The Author(s) 2021
