Effect of mixing on mass transfer characterization in continuous slugs and dispersed droplets in biphasic slug flow microreactors

The mass transfer of slug flow, a widely applied flow pattern in microreactors, is still difficult to predict mainly due to the competing nature between convection and diffusion. This work focused on the influence of the mixing mechanism on the mass transfer performance under gas–liquid and liquid–liquid slug flow, in both continuous slugs and dispersed droplets. Colorimetric study with the resazurin oxidation system was implemented, where the mass transfer resistance was constantly located in the aqueous phase. In the hydrophilic glass microreactor, the convection featured by intensive internal circulation and/or inter-slug leakage flow dominated diffusion, leading to nearly-constant kLa along the channel under given flow rates. However, in the hydrophobic PTFE capillary, the stagnant region constituted a significant share in the aqueous droplet, indicating the prominent role of diffusion against convection therein. As a result, kLa values decreased along the main channel length in fixed operating conditions. Accordingly, prediction models were respectively correlated depending on mixing mechanisms. Moreover, mass transfer contributions from the bubble and droplet formation stages were also investigated. This work is expected to shed light on judicious process design and reliable predictions in microreactor operations

Hydrodynamics and local mass transfer characterization under gas–liquid–liquid slug flow in a rectangular microchannel

Gas-liquid-liquid three-phase slug flow was generated in a glass microreactor with rectangular microchannel, where aqueous slugs were distinguished by relative positions to air bubbles and organic droplets. Oxygen from bubbles reacted with resazurin in slugs, leading to prominent color changes, which was used to quantify mass transfer performance. The development of slug length indicated a film flow through the corner between bubbles and the channel wall, where the aqueous phase was saturated with oxygen transferred from bubble body. This film flow results in the highest equivalent oxygen concentration within the slug led by a bubble and followed by a droplet. The three-phase slug flow subregime with alternate bubble and droplet was found to benefit the overall mass transfer performance most. These results provide insights into a precise manipulation of gas-liquid-liquid slug flow in microreactors and the relevant mass transfer behavior thereof

RecycleGPT: An Autoregressive Language Model with Recyclable Module

Existing large language models have to run K times to generate a sequence of K tokens. In this paper, we present RecycleGPT, a generative language model with fast decoding speed by recycling pre-generated model states without running the whole model in multiple steps. Our approach relies on the observation that adjacent tokens in a sequence usually have strong correlations and the next token in a sequence can be reasonably guessed or inferred based on the preceding ones. Experiments and analysis demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in lowering inference latency, achieving up to 1.4x speedup while preserving high performance.Comment: Technical Repor

Spirulina can increase total-body vitamin A stores of Chinese school-age children as determined by a paired isotope dilution technique

Spirulina is an alga rich in high-quality protein and carotenoids. It is unclear whether spirulina can improve the total-body vitamin A stores of school-age children in China with a high prevalence of vitamin A malnutrition. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of spirulina in improving the total-body vitamin A stores of school-age children in rural areas of China when they consumed spirulina in their daily meals. A total of 228 children (6-11 years) were recruited and randomly divided into three groups supplemented with 4g (containing 4·18µg β-carotene), 2g (containing 2·54µg β-carotene) or 0g spirulina 5d/week for 10 weeks, respectively. Before and after the intervention period, each child was given 0·5mg [2H4]retinyl acetate and [2H8]retinyl acetate, respectively. To assess vitamin A stores, blood samples (3ml) were collected on the third and the twenty-first day after each labelled retinyl acetate dose for a retinol enrichment analysis using a GC mass spectrometer. The concentrations of retinol and β-carotene in serum samples were also determined by using HPLC. After the 10-week intervention, serum β-carotene concentrations of children with 2 or 4g spirulina supplement increased by 0·160 and 0·389µmmol/l, respectively. Total-body vitamin A stores increased significantly, with a median increase of 0·160mmol in children taking 2g spirulina and of 0·279mmol in children taking 4g spirulina. Spirulina is a good dietary source of β-carotene, which may effectively increase the total-body vitamin A stores of Chinese school-age childre

Funding: UK EPSRC grants ”Discovery” EP/P020631/1, ”ABC: Adaptive Brokerage for the Cloud” EP/R010528/1.This article presents an automatic k-means clustering solution targeting the Sunway TaihuLight supercomputer. We first introduce a multilevel parallel partition approach that not only partitions by dataflow and centroid, but also by dimension, which unlocks the potential of the hierarchical parallelism in the heterogeneous many-core processor and the system architecture of the supercomputer. The parallel design is able to process large-scale clustering problems with up to 196,608 dimensions and over 160,000 targeting centroids, while maintaining high performance and high scalability. Furthermore, we propose an automatic hyper-parameter determination process for k-means clustering, by automatically generating and executing the clustering tasks with a set of candidate hyper-parameter, and then determining the optimal hyper-parameter using a proposed evaluation method. The proposed auto-clustering solution can not only achieve high performance and scalability for problems with massive high-dimensional data, but also support clustering without sufficient prior knowledge for the number of targeted clusters, which can potentially increase the scope of k-means algorithm to new application areas.PostprintPeer reviewe
