Braceros, Mexicans, Americans, and Schools: (Re) imagining Teaching and Learning in Mexican America

    Get PDF
This article examines the stories of Braceros, Mexican contract workers who participated in an international labor agreement between the United States and México between 1942 and 1964. The stories Braceros tell challenge some conventional historiographical notions that they were powerless agents and victims of exploitative labor practices. The stories shed new light regarding the kinds of agency and power Braceros actually displayed in negotiating certain circumstances specific to their work

MODELING AND PROJECTS: HEALTHY EATING, ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS AND PROPOSING A THEME

This work presents a proposal of modeling activities designed and implemented in a seventh-level course (12 years old). The activities include three phases: understanding modeling, modeling itself, and formulating modeling projects. These phases are intended to facilitate the modeling process. The activities are contextualized in themes of interest: healthy eating, awareness of the garbage produced, and the third phase, student proposals of a theme and problem. These proposals emphasize the development of contextualized problems where the mathematics emerge naturally from the themes. The aim of the study was to understand the difficulties and potentialities of implementing the modeling activities and was approached through a qualitative research, collecting data from the students' productions, and an interview with the course teacher. Grounded theory was used to analyze the data, from which categories emerged relating to students’ and teachers’ difficulties and potentialities. Results indicate that, on one hand, the proposal allowed students to visualize the mathematical difficulties and thus, support them; on the other hand, working with contextualized situations allowed the students to participate in the activities and develop communication and complementary skills. These activities allowed students to relate mathematics to real-life situations, visualizing its importance and identifying how it can be used in diverse contexts.

Abstract: This paper examines the effect of marginal income tax rates on labor supply in Mexico using a modified version of Rosen´s (1976) personal income taxation model. The study analyzes how salaried workers of the formal sector react to changes in the marginal income tax rate. Special attention is given to the sample, in order to control the problem of the high level of tax evasion in Mexico in our estimation. We find evidence that hours of work diminish when marginal income tax rates increase

Free Trade and Pollution in the Manufacturing Industry in Mexico : A Verification of the Inverse Kuznets Curve at a State Level

There has been a long debate about the effects that free trade has on pollution. Most empirical analysis on this topic has focused at the national level. The objective of this study is to see if there is a relationship between the pollution generated by the manufacturing industry in each of Mexico’s 32 states and the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). This was done via panel data regression models using information on pollution, income, and degree of trade from each of the states for the years 1993 and 2000. The pollution index level was constructed using the Industrial Pollution Projection System from the World Bank. In general we found a positive relationship between trade liberalization and pollution caused by manufacturing. Furthermore, we found that income and pollution follow the relationship expressed in the Environmental Kuznets Curve.Free Trade, Pollution in manufacturing industry, Environmental Kuznets Curve, State-level data

Abstract: Different variables have been proposed to explain the migration phenomenon; recently, environmental degradation has been increasingly prevalent in the literature as a determinant of migration. According to Jha and Whalley (2003), the environment-migration relationship can be theoretically demonstrated using the traditional Harris-Todaro (1970) model of rural and urban migration, in which the unemployment variable, if interpreted as damage, can be replaced by pollution. Using a cross-section model we present, in this study, evidence for Mexico to support Jha and Whalley, finding a positive relationship between migration and pollution
