Comparative cost of ART and conventional treatment within a dental school clinic
PKBACKGROUND: The changing oral health needs in South Africa require that both the teaching and clinical techniques of atraumatic restorative treatment (ART) form a part of the restorative undergraduate curriculum.
OBJECTIVE: This study was undertaken to establish and compare the estimated costing of an amalgam, composite resin and ART restoration within the Board of Health Funders (BHF) recommended scale of benefits at the School of Oral Health Sciences Oral and Dental Hospital, University of the Witwatersrand (SOHS).
METHODS: Fixed and variable costs were calculated by pricing items and equipment used in each procedure. The output values were established according to the recommended scale of benefits (BHF, 1999). This enabled the calculation of contribution margins and net income for each of the three restorations.
RESULTS: The annual capital cost for the ART approach is approximately 50% of the other two options (e.g. per multiple surface restoration ART = R1.58; amalgam and composite resin restorative procedures: R3.12 and R3.10 respectively), despite the fact that ART restorations are rendered in a modern dental setting.
CONCLUSIONS: Our study shows that implementation of the ART approach within the clinic setting of the SOHS can be accomplished without additional cost. Furthermore ART can be performed as an economically viable alternative to conventional treatment procedures within the clinic setting. The study represents a first step towards determining the cost efficiency of implementing ART as a pragmatic and cost-effective restorative option within the SOHS, University of the Witwatersrand
B-Decay CP Asymmetries, Discrete Ambiguities and New Physics
The first measurements of CP violation in the system will likely probe

triangle, these measurements determine the angle set
except for a twofold discrete ambiguity. If one allows for the possibility of
new physics, the presence of this discrete ambiguity can make its discovery
difficult: if only one of the two candidate solutions is consistent with
constraints from other measurements in the and systems, one is not sure
whether new physics is present or not. We review the methods used to resolve
the discrete ambiguity and show that, even in the presence of new physics, they
can usually be used to uncover this new physics. There are some exceptions,
which we describe in detail. We systematically scan the parameter space and
present examples of values of and the new-physics
parameters which correspond to all possibilities. Finally, we show that if one
relaxes the assumption that the bag parameters \BBd and \BK are positive,

Anaerobic Methane Oxidation in a Landfill-Leachate Plume
The alluvial aquifer adjacent to Norman Landfill, OK, provides an excellent natural laboratory for the study of anaerobic processes impacting landfill-leachate contaminated aquifers. We collected groundwaters from a transect of seven multilevel wells ranging in depth from 1.3 to 11 m that were oriented parallel to the flow path. The center of the leachate plume was characterized by (1) high alkalinity and elevated concentrations of total dissolved organic carbon, reduced iron, and methane, and (2) negligible oxygen, nitrate, and sulfate concentrations. Methane concentrations and stable carbon isotope (δ13C) values suggest anaerobic methane oxidation was occurring within the plume and at its margins. Methane δ13C values increased from about -54‰ near the source to >-10‰ downgradient and at the plume margins. The isotopic fractionation associated with this methane oxidation was -13.6±1.0‰. Methane 13C enrichment indicated that 80-90% of the original landfill methane was oxidized over the 210-m transect. Firstorder rate constants ranged from 0.06 to 0.23 per year, and oxidation rates ranged from 18 to 230µM/y. Overall, hydrochemical data suggest that a sulfate reducermethanogen consortium may mediate this methane oxidation. These results demonstrate that natural attenuation through anaerobic methane oxidation can be an important sink for landfill methane in aquifer systems
Data and the city – accessibility and openness. a cybersalon paper on open data
This paper showcases examples of bottom–up open data and smart city applications and identifies lessons for future such efforts. Examples include Changify, a neighbourhood-based platform for residents, businesses, and companies; Open Sensors, which provides APIs to help businesses, startups, and individuals develop applications for the Internet of Things; and Cybersalon’s Hackney Treasures. a location-based mobile app that uses Wikipedia entries geolocated in Hackney borough to map notable local residents. Other experiments with sensors and open data by Cybersalon members include Ilze Black and Nanda Khaorapapong's The Breather, a "breathing" balloon that uses high-end, sophisticated sensors to make air quality visible; and James Moulding's AirPublic, which measures pollution levels. Based on Cybersalon's experience to date, getting data to the people is difficult, circuitous, and slow, requiring an intricate process of leadership, public relations, and perseverance. Although there are myriad tools and initiatives, there is no one solution for the actual transfer of that data
Towards granular hydrodynamics in two-dimensions
We study steady-state properties of inelastic gases in two-dimensions in the
presence of an energy source. We generalize previous hydrodynamic treatments to
situations where high and low density regions coexist. The theoretical
predictions compare well with numerical simulations in the nearly elastic
limit. It is also seen that the system can achieve a nonequilibrium
steady-state with asymmetric velocity distributions, and we discuss the

Detecting synchronization of self-sustained oscillators by external driving with varying frequency
We propose a method for detecting the presence of synchronization of
self-sustained oscillator by external driving with linearly varying frequency.
The method is based on a continuous wavelet transform of the signals of
self-sustained oscillator and external force and allows one to distinguish the
case of true synchronization from the case of spurious synchronization caused
by linear mixing of the signals. We apply the method to driven van der Pol
oscillator and to experimental data of human heart rate variability and

Utilizing the Boston Syncope Observation Management Pathway to Reduce Hospital Admission and Decrease Adverse Outcomes
Introduction: In an age of increasing scrutiny of each hospital admission, emergency department (ED) observation has been identified as a low-cost alternative. Prior studies have shown admission rates for syncope in the United States to be as high as 70%. However, the safety and utility of substituting ED observation unit (EDOU) syncope management has not been well studied. The objective of this study was to evaluate the safety of EDOU for the management of patients presenting to the ED with syncope and its efficacy in reducing hospital admissions.
Methods: This was a prospective before-and-after cohort study of consecutive patients presenting with syncope who were seen in an urban ED and were either admitted to the hospital, discharged, or placed in the EDOU. We first performed an observation study of syncope management and then implemented an ED observation-based management pathway. We identified critical interventions and 30-day outcomes. We compared proportions of admissions and adverse events rates with a chisquared or Fisher’s exact test.
Results: In the “before” phase, 570 patients were enrolled, with 334 (59%) admitted and 27 (5%) placed in the EDOU; 3% of patients discharged from the ED had critical interventions within 30 days and 10% returned. After the management pathway was introduced, 489 patients were enrolled; 34% (p\u3c0.001) of pathway patients were admitted while 20% were placed in the EDOU; 3% (p=0.99) of discharged patients had critical interventions at 30 days and 3% returned (p=0.001).
Conclusion: A focused syncope management pathway effectively reduces hospital admissions and adverse events following discharge and returns to the ED. [West J Emerg Med. 2019;20(2)250–255.
Imaging the Effects of Oxygen Saturation Changes in Voluntary Apnea and Hyperventilation on Susceptibility-Weighted Imaging
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cerebrovascular oxygenation changes during respiratory challenges have clinically important implications for brain function, including cerebral autoregulation and the rate of brain metabolism. SWI is sensitive to venous oxygenation level by exploitation of the magnetic susceptibility of deoxygenated blood. We assessed cerebral venous blood oxygenation changes during simple voluntary breath-holding (apnea) and hyperventilation by use of SWI at 3T.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed SWI scans (3T; acquisition time of 1 minute, 28 seconds; centered on the anterior commissure and the posterior commissure) on 10 healthy male volunteers during baseline breathing as well as during simple voluntary hyperventilation and apnea challenges. The hyperventilation and apnea tasks were separated by a 5-minute resting period. SWI venograms were generated, and the signal changes on SWI before and after the respiratory stress tasks were compared by means of a paired Student t test.
RESULTS: Changes in venous vasculature visibility caused by the respiratory challenges were directly visualized on the SWI venograms. The venogram segmentation results showed that voluntary apnea decreased the mean venous blood voxel number by 1.6% (P < .0001), and hyperventilation increased the mean venous blood voxel number by 2.7% (P < .0001). These results can be explained by blood CO2 changes secondary to the respiratory challenges, which can alter cerebrovascular tone and cerebral blood flow and ultimately affect venous oxygen levels.
CONCLUSIONS: These results highlight the sensitivity of SWI to simple and noninvasive respiratory challenges and its potential utility in assessing cerebral hemodynamics and vasomotor responses
Detection of synchronization from univariate data using wavelet transform
A method is proposed for detecting from univariate data the presence of
synchronization of a self-sustained oscillator by external driving with varying
frequency. The method is based on the analysis of difference between the
oscillator instantaneous phases calculated using continuous wavelet transform
at time moments shifted by a certain constant value relative to each other. We
apply our method to a driven asymmetric van der Pol oscillator, experimental
data from a driven electronic oscillator with delayed feedback and human
heartbeat time series. In the latest case, the analysis of the heart rate
variability data reveals synchronous regimes between the respiration and slow
