Potential Scattering in Dirac Field Theory
We develop the potential scattering of a spinor within the context of
perturbation field theory. As an application, we reproduce, up to second order
in the potential, the diffusion results for a potential barrier of quantum
mechanics. An immediate consequence is a simple generalization to arbitrary
potential forms, a feature not possible in quantum mechanics.Comment: 7 page
Noncomputability Arising In Dynamical Triangulation Model Of Four-Dimensional Quantum Gravity
Computations in Dynamical Triangulation Models of Four-Dimensional Quantum
Gravity involve weighted averaging over sets of all distinct triangulations of
compact four-dimensional manifolds. In order to be able to perform such
computations one needs an algorithm which for any given and a given compact
four-dimensional manifold constructs all possible triangulations of
with simplices. Our first result is that such algorithm does not
exist. Then we discuss recursion-theoretic limitations of any algorithm
designed to perform approximate calculations of sums over all possible

The fate of spinons in spontaneously dimerised spin-1/2 ladders
We study a weakly coupled, frustrated two-leg spin-1/2 Heisenberg ladder. For
vanishing coupling between the chains, elementary excitations are deconfined,
gapless spin-1/2 objects called spinons. We investigate the fate of spinons for
the case of a weak interchain interaction. We show that despite a drastic
change in ground state, which becomes spontaneously dimerised, spinons survive
as elementary excitations but acquire a spectral gap. We furthermore determine

Quantum Groups, Gravity, and the Generalized Uncertainty Principle
We investigate the relationship between the generalized uncertainty principle
in quantum gravity and the quantum deformation of the Poincar\'e algebra. We
find that a deformed Newton-Wigner position operator and the generators of
spatial translations and rotations of the deformed Poincar\'e algebra obey a
deformed Heisenberg algebra from which the generalized uncertainty principle
follows. The result indicates that in the -deformed Poincar\'e algebra

Convenient Versus Unique Effective Action Formalism in 2D Dilaton-Maxwell Quantum Gravity
The structure of one-loop divergences of two-dimensional dilaton-Maxwell
quantum gravity is investigated in two formalisms: one using a convenient
effective action and the other a unique effective action. The one-loop
divergences (including surface divergences) of the convenient effective action
are calculated in three different covariant gauges: (i) De Witt, (ii)
-degenerate De Witt, and (iii) simplest covariant. The on-shell
effective action is given by surface divergences only (finiteness of the
-matrix), which yet depend upon the gauge condition choice.
Off-shell renormalizability is discussed and classes of renormalizable
dilaton and Maxwell potentials are found which coincide in the cases of
convenient and unique effective actions. A detailed comparison of both
situations, i.e. convenient vs. unique effective action, is given. As an
extension of the procedure, the one-loop effective action in two-dimensional

The T=0 neutron-proton pairing correlations in the superdeformed rotational bands around 60Zn
The superdeformed bands in 58Cu, 59Cu, 60Zn, and 61Zn are analyzed within the
frameworks of the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock as well as Strutinsky-Woods-Saxon total
routhian surface methods with and without the T=1 pairing correlations. It is
shown that a consistent description within these standard approaches cannot be
achieved. A T=0 neutron-proton pairing configuration mixing of
signature-separated bands in 60Zn is suggested as a possible solution to the

Efimov Trimers near the Zero-crossing of a Feshbach Resonance
Near a Feshbach resonance, the two-body scattering length can assume any
value. When it approaches zero, the next-order term given by the effective
range is known to diverge. We consider the question of whether this divergence
(and the vanishing of the scattering length) is accompanied by an anomalous
solution of the three-boson Schr\"odinger equation similar to the one found at
infinite scattering length by Efimov. Within a simple zero-range model, we find
no such solutions, and conclude that higher-order terms do not support Efimov

The Equivalence Principle and the Constants of Nature
We briefly review the various contexts within which one might address the
issue of ``why'' the dimensionless constants of Nature have the particular
values that they are observed to have. Both the general historical trend, in
physics, of replacing a-priori-given, absolute structures by dynamical
entities, and anthropic considerations, suggest that coupling ``constants''
have a dynamical nature. This hints at the existence of observable violations
of the Equivalence Principle at some level, and motivates the need for improved

Dressed States Approach to Quantum Systems
Using the non-perturbative method of {\it dressed} states previously
introduced in JPhysA, we study effects of the environment on a quantum
mechanical system, in the case the environment is modeled by an ensemble of non
interacting harmonic oscillators. This method allows to separate the whole
system into the {\it dressed} mechanical system and the {\it dressed}
environment, in terms of which an exact, non-perturbative approach is possible.
When applied to the Brownian motion, we give explicit non-perturbative formulas
for the classical path of the particle in the weak and strong coupling regimes.
When applied to study atomic behaviours in cavities, the method accounts very

Associations between insulin resistance and three B-vitamins in european adolescents: The HELENA study
Objective: To assess whether adolescents with high body mass index (BMI), or fat mass index (FMI), in combination with insulin resistance (assessed with the Homeostatic Model Assessment [HOMA] index), had also lower blood vitamin B6, folate and vitamin B12 concentrations. Methods and materials: Six hundred and fifteen adolescents from the Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence (HELENA) study, with data on B-vitamins (both intakes and status), and BMI, FMI, HOMA, were selected. Intakes were assessed by two non-consecutive 24-h recalls. B-vitamins biomarkers were measured by chromatography and immunoassay. Analysis of covariance was applied to elucidate the differences in B-vitamins between combinations of groups defined according to the median of the z-scores of markers of body composition and insulin sensitivity. Results: When considering energy intakes and education of the mother in the model, in females, vitamin B6 intakes were higher in the high BMI/ high HOMA group than in the high BMI-low HOMA group. Similarly, vitamin B6 intakes were higher in the high FMI/high HOMA group than in the low FMI/low HOMA group. Plasma vitamin B12 was significantly lower in males in the high FMI/high HOMA group than in the low FMI/low HOMA group, keeping also significant their trends throughout the groups, a fact that can be observed also for females (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Adolescents with combined higher adiposity and higher HOMA insulin sensitivity showed lower vitamin B12 plasma concentrations.
