    Wilson Loop-Loop Correlators in AdS/QCD

    We calculate the expectation value of one circular Wilson loop and the correlator of two concentric circular Wilson loops in AdS/QCD using the modified AdS_5-metric given in Ref.[1].     On Fields with Finite Information Density

    The existence of a natural ultraviolet cutoff at the Planck scale is widely expected. In a previous Letter, it has been proposed to model this cutoff as an information density bound by utilizing suitably generalized methods from the mathematical theory of communication.     Quantum disorder in the two-dimensional pyrochlore Heisenberg antiferromagnet

    We present the results of an exact diagonalization study of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a two-dimensional version of the pyrochlore lattice, also known as the square lattice with crossings or the checkerboard lattice. Examining the low energy spectra for systems of up to 24 spins, we find that all clusters studied have non-degenerate ground states with total spin zero, and big energy gaps to states with higher total spin. We also find a large number of non-magnetic excitations at energies within this spin gap. Spin-spin and spin-Peierls correlation functions appear to be short-ranged, and we suggest that the ground state is a spin liquid.Comment: 7 pages, 11 figures, RevTeX minor changes made, Figure 6 correcte

    Spinning Pulsating String Solitons in AdS_5 x S^5

    We point out the existence of some simple string solitons in AdS_5 x S^5, which at the same time are spinning in AdS_5 and pulsating in S^5, or vice-versa. This introduces an additional arbitrary constant into the scaling relations between energy and spin or R-charge. The arbitrary constant is not an angular momentum, but can be related to the amplitude of the pulsation. We discuss the solutions in detail and consider the scaling relations.     Superconducting fluctuations in the Luther-Emery liquid

    The single-particle superconducting Green's functions of a Luther-Emery liquid is computed by bosonization techniques. Using a formulation introduced by Poilblanc and Scalapino [Phys. Rev. B v. 66, art. 052513 (2002)], an asymptotic expression of the superconducting gap is deduced in the long wavelength and small frequency limit. Due to superconducting phase fluctuations, the gap exhibits as a function of size L a (1/L)^{1/2K_\rho} power-law decay as well as an interesting singularity at the spectral gap energy.     Non BPS noncommutative vortices

    We construct exact vortex solutions to the equations of motion of the Abelian Higgs model defined in non commutative space, analyzing in detail the properties of these solutions beyond the BPS point. We show that our solutions behave as smooth deformations of vortices in ordinary space time except for parity symmetry breaking effects induced by the non commutative parameter Ξ\theta.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figure

    Open String Fluctuations in AdS with and without Torsion

    The equations of motion and boundary conditions for the fluctuations around a classical open string, in a curved space-time with torsion, are considered in compact and world-sheet covariant form. The rigidly rotating open strings in Anti de Sitter space with and without torsion are investigated in detail. By carefully analyzing the tangential fluctuations at the boundary, we show explicitly that the physical fluctuations (which at the boundary are combinations of normal and tangential fluctuations) are finite, even though the world-sheet is singular there. The divergent 2-curvature thus seems less dangerous than expected, in these cases. The general formalism can be straightforwardly used also to study the (bosonic part of the) fluctuations around the closed strings, recently considered in connection with the AdS/CFT duality, on AdS_5 \times S^5 and AdS_3 \times S^3 \times T^4.Comment: 19 pages, Late

    Disorder Effects in Two-Dimensional d-wave Superconductors

    Influence of weak nonmagnetic impurities on the single-particle density of states ρ(ω)\rho(\omega) of two-dimensional electron systems with a conical spectrum is studied. We use a nonperturbative approach, based on replica trick with subsequent mapping of the effective action onto a one-dimensional model of interacting fermions, the latter being treated by Abelian and non-Abelian bosonization methods. It is shown that, in a d-wave superconductor, the density of states, averaged over randomness, follows a nontrivial power-law behavior near the Fermi energy: ρ(ω)âˆŒâˆŁÏ‰âˆŁÎ±\rho(\omega) \sim |\omega|^{\alpha}. The exponent α>0\alpha>0 is calculated for several types of disorder. We demonstrate that the property ρ(0)=0\rho(0) = 0 is a direct consequence of a {\it continuous} symmetry of the effective fermionic model, whose breakdown is forbidden in two dimensions. As a counter example, we consider another model with a conical spectrum - a two-dimensional orbital antiferromagnet, where static disorder leads to a finite ρ(0)\rho(0) due to breakdown of a {\it discrete} (particle-hole) symmetry.Comment: 24 pages, 3 figures upon request, RevTe

    Transmogrifying Fuzzy Vortices

    We show that the construction of vortex solitons of the noncommutative Abelian-Higgs model can be extended to a critically coupled gauged linear sigma model with Fayet-Illiopolous D-terms. Like its commutative counterpart, this fuzzy linear sigma model has a rich spectrum of BPS solutions. We offer an explicit construction of the degree−k-k static semilocal vortex and study in some detail the infinite coupling limit in which it descends to a degree−k-k \C\Pk^{N} instanton. This relation between the fuzzy vortex and noncommutative lump is used to suggest an interpretation of the noncommutative sigma model soliton as tilted D-strings stretched between an NS5-brane and a stack of D3-branes in type IIB superstring theory.Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures, LaTeX(JHEP3
