    This report contains information on the biological sampling for the market sampling program: which species are sampled, how they were caught, when and where the samples are taken (date and position), how many fish have been measured, how many fish have been aged, etc. The report gives an overview of all the biological sampling activities in 2002 by RIVO on the landings of the commercial important species of herring, mackerel, horse mackerel, blue whiting, greater argentine, sole, plaice, turbot, brill, dab, lemon sole, cod, whiting, Norway lobster and four different species of rays from all ICES areas. This biological sampling took place on landings by both the Dutch fleet as well as foreign fleets landing in the Netherlands. In addition this report contains information on the biological samples collected during research vessel surveys and discard trips both on commercial and non-commercial species

    The conductivity and band structure of some synthetic semiconductors based on M(dmit)2 (M = Ni, Pd, Pt)

    The conductivity of the following six new low-dimensional compounds is reported: (Me4N)(Ni(dmit)2), (Et4N)(Ni(dmit)2), (Pr4N)(Ni(dmit)2), (Bu4N)(Ni(dmit)2), (Bu4N)(Pt(dmit)2) and (Et4N)0.5(Pd(dmit)2). Semiconducting behaviour is found for all the compounds investigated, with activation energies between 0.1 and 0.5 eV. The crystal structures have been established by X-ray diffraction. Using these, the band structure has been determined. It is shown that the compounds investigated are semiconductors each having a correlation gap resulting from an effective electron-electron repulsion of 1.0 eV

    Determining Pain Detection and Tolerance Thresholds Using an Integrated, Multi-Modal Pain Task Battery

    Human pain models are useful in the assessing the analgesic effect of drugs, providing information about a drug's pharmacology and identify potentially suitable therapeutic populations. The need to use a comprehensive battery of pain models is highlighted by studies whereby only a single pain model, thought to relate to the clinical situation, demonstrates lack of efficacy. No single experimental model can mimic the complex nature of clinical pain. The integrated, multi-modal pain task battery presented here encompasses the electrical stimulation task, pressure stimulation task, cold pressor task, the UVB inflammatory model which includes a thermal task and a paradigm for inhibitory conditioned pain modulation. These human pain models have been tested for predicative validity and reliability both in their own right and in combination, and can be used repeatedly, quickly, in short succession, with minimum burden for the subject and with a modest quantity of equipment. This allows a drug to be fully characterized and profiled for analgesic effect which is especially useful for drugs with a novel or untested mechanism of action.     A cross-sectional study in healthy elderly subjects aimed at development of an algorithm to increase identification of Alzheimer pathology for the purpose of clinical trial participation

    In the current study, we aimed to develop an algorithm based on biomarkers obtained through nonor minimally invasive procedures to identify healthy elderly subjects who have an increased risk of abnormal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) amyloid beta42 (Aβ) levels consistent with the presence of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathology. The use of the algorithm may help to identify subjects with preclinical AD who are eligible for potential participation in trials with disease modifying compounds being developed for AD.
