Comparison of theoretically predicted lateral-directional aerodynamic characteristics with full-scale wind tunnel data on the ATLIT airplane

    Get PDF
An analytical method is presented for predicting lateral-directional aerodynamic characteristics of light twin engine propeller-driven airplanes. This method is applied to the Advanced Technology Light Twin Engine airplane. The calculated characteristics are correlated against full-scale wind tunnel data. The method predicts the sideslip derivatives fairly well, although angle of attack variations are not well predicted. Spoiler performance was predicted somewhat high but was still reasonable. The rudder derivatives were not well predicted, in particular the effect of angle of attack. The predicted dynamic derivatives could not be correlated due to lack of experimental data

The National Puzzlers\u27 League recently celebrated its centennial with a three-day convention held in New Brunswick, N.J. in July 1983. The following account, reprinted from the March 1937 American Magazine, entertainingly describes an NPL regional meeting a half-century ago. Rufus T. Strohm, editor of the Enigma (the official publication of the League), wrote in April 1937 The article in the March American Magazine about the league and the Krewe is a swell job, and the author Jerome Beatty (pseudonymically J.B. Griswold) has the thanks of all of us for giving so accurate a picture of us and our activities. It is comforting to discover a writer who can discern in us something more than an assortment of nuts

A Java Implementation of a Portable Desktop Manager

Computers equipped with a Graphical User Interface (GUI) and connected to the Internet are common in both the business and educational communities. These computers, using a web browser, easily share programs written in the Java programming language that are able to execute on a variety of heterogeneous machines. While programs written in many languages will not execute unmodified on different computing platforms because of portability restrictions, Java has overcome these limitations and provides a platform independent language. However, every programming language is limited, and no language provides all the features required for every program. Therefore, creation of any portable program must consider not only the language, but also the architecture and operating system constraints of the target machines. A desktop manager program was developed using the Java programming language. This program provides a uniform user interface to manage other programs and executes on multiple computer platforms

Comparison of theoretical predicted longitudinal aerodynamic characteristics with full-scale wind tunnel data on the ATLIT airplane

An analytical method is presented for predicting the lift coefficient, the pitching moment coefficient, and the drag coefficient of light, twin-engine, propeller-driven airplanes. The method was applied to the Advanced Technology Light Twin-Engine airplane. The calculated characteristics were then correlated against full scale wind tunnel data. The analytical method was found to predict the drag and pitching moment fairly well. However, the lift prediction was extremely poor

A study of commuter airplane design optimization

    Get PDF
Problems of commuter airplane configuration design were studied to affect a minimization of direct operating costs. Factors considered were the minimization of fuselage drag, methods of wing design, and the estimated drag of an airplane submerged in a propellor slipstream; all design criteria were studied under a set of fixed performance, mission, and stability constraints. Configuration design data were assembled for application by a computerized design methodology program similar to the NASA-Ames General Aviation Synthesis Program
