A finite element program for the static analysis of branched, thin shells of revolution under axisymmetric loading
A finite element computer program which uses the conical, frustrum element is presented for the Linear elastic, static analysis of variable thickness, branched, thin shells of revolution, composed of straight sections and subject to general, axisymmetric mechanical, 1,oading. The thin she1,1, theory and finite element theory forming the basis of the analysis are described, with particular attention being given to the closing of the she l, 1, at the axis of symmetry, and shell branching. Numerous problems embodying al,1, relevant features of the program are analysed, and their solutions are discussed. A user's manual, for the program is appended, and guidelines for the efficient use of the program are given
Two-fluid dynamics for a Bose-Einstein condensate out of local equilibrium with the non-condensate
We extend our recent work on the two-fluid hydrodynamics of a Bose-condensed
gas by including collisions involving both condensate and non-condensate atoms.
These collisions are essential for establishing a state of local thermodynamic
equilibrium between the condensate and non-condensate. Our theory is more
general than the usual Landau two-fluid theory, to which it reduces in the
appropriate limit, in that it allows one to describe situations in which a
state of complete local equilibrium between the two components has not been
reached. The exchange of atoms between the condensate and non-condensate is

Urban Tourism Research. Developing an Agenda
The study of urban tourism and associated focus on urban tourist precincts is a growing area of interest as practitioners, researchers and policy makers seek to understand the phenomenon of tourism within the urban environment. In Australia research in this area has lacked integration and has not engaged sufficiently with the contextual setting of the urban environment. This paper reports on a study that was undertaken to identify the important areas that should be included in an urban tourism research agenda. This paper has three aims: to review the literature on urban tourism; to outline the process that was undertaken to identify areas for urban tourism research; and to present a conceptual framework that can be used to focus future urban tourism research. © 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Structure determination from powder data : Mogul and CASTEP
When solving the crystal structure of complex molecules from powder data, accurately locating the global minimum can be challenging, particularly where the number of internal degrees of freedom is large. The program Mogul provides a convenient means to access typical torsion angle ranges for fragments related to the molecule of interest. The impact that the application of modal torsion angle constraints has on the structure determination process of two structure solution attempts using DASH is presented. Once solved, accurate refinement of a molecular structure against powder data can also present challenges. Geometry optimisation using density functional theory in CASTEP is shown to be an effective means to locate hydrogen atom positions reliably and return a more accurate description of molecular conformation and intermolecular interactions than global optimisation and Rietveld refinement alone
First and Second Sound Modes of a Bose-Einstein Condensate in a Harmonic Trap
We have calculated the first and second sound modes of a dilute interacting
Bose gas in a spherical trap for temperatures () and for
systems with to particles. The second sound modes (which exist
only below ) generally have a stronger temperature dependence than the
first sound modes. The puzzling temperature variations of the sound modes near
recently observed at JILA in systems with particles match
surprisingly well with those of the first and second sound modes of much larger
systems.Comment: a shorten version, more discussions are given on the nature of the
second sound. A long footnote on the recent work of Zaremba, Griffin, and
Nikuni (cond-mat/9705134) is added, the spectrum of the (\ell=1, n_2=0) mode
is included in fig.
Thermodynamic signatures for the existence of Dirac electrons in ZrTe5
We combine transport, magnetization, and torque magnetometry measurements to
investigate the electronic structure of ZrTe5 and its evolution with
temperature. At fields beyond the quantum limit, we observe a magnetization
reversal from paramagnetic to diamagnetic response, which is characteristic of
a Dirac semi-metal. We also observe a strong non-linearity in the magnetization
that suggests the presence of additional low-lying carriers from other
low-energy bands. Finally, we observe a striking sensitivity of the magnetic
reversal to temperature that is not readily explained by simple band-structure
models, but may be connected to a temperature dependent Lifshitz transition
proposed to exist in this material.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
First Results from SPARO: Evidence for Large-Scale Toroidal Magnetic Fields in the Galactic Center
We have observed the linear polarization of 450 micron continuum emission
from the Galactic center, using a new polarimetric detector system that is
operated on a 2 m telescope at the South Pole. The resulting polarization map
extends ~ 170 pc along the Galactic plane and ~ 30 pc in Galactic latitude, and
thus covers a significant fraction of the central molecular zone. Our map shows
that this region is permeated by large-scale toroidal magnetic fields. We
consider our results together with radio observations that show evidence for
poloidal fields in the Galactic center, and with Faraday rotation observations.
We compare all of these observations with the predictions of a magnetodynamic
model for the Galactic center that was proposed in order to explain the
Galactic Center Radio Lobe as a magnetically driven gas outflow. We conclude

Using White Dish CMB Anisotropy Data to Probe Open and Flat-Lambda CDM Cosmogonies
We use data from the White Dish experiment to set limits on cosmic microwave
background radiation anisotropies in open and spatially-flat-Lambda cold dark
matter cosmogonies. We account for the White Dish calibration uncertainty, and
marginalize over the offset and gradient removed from the data. Our 2-sigma
upper limits are larger than those derived previously. These upper limits are
consistent with those derived from the -DMR data for all models tested.Comment: 17 pages of latex. Uses aasms4.sty. 4 figures included. Submitted to

The Adhesive Capsulitis Corticosteroid and Dilation (ACCorD) randomized controlled trial.
AIMS: Is it feasible to conduct a definitive multicentre trial in community settings of corticosteroid injections (CSI) and hydrodilation (HD) compared to CSI for patients with frozen shoulder? An adequately powered definitive randomized controlled trial (RCT) delivered in primary care will inform clinicians and the public whether hydrodilation is a clinically and cost-effective intervention. In this study, prior to a full RCT, we propose a feasibility trial to evaluate recruitment and retention by patient and clinician willingness of randomization; rates of withdrawal, crossover and attrition; and feasibility of outcome data collection from routine primary and secondary care data. METHODS: In the UK, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) advises that prompt early management of frozen shoulder is initiated in primary care settings with analgesia, physiotherapy, and joint injections; most people can be managed without an operation. Currently, there is variation in the type of joint injection: 1) CSI, thought to reduce the inflammation of the capsule reducing pain; and 2) HD, where a small volume of fluid is injected into the shoulder joint along with the steroid, aiming to stretch the capsule of the shoulder to improve pain, but also allowing greater movement. The creation of musculoskeletal hubs nationwide provides infrastructure for the early and effective management of frozen shoulder. This potentially reduces costs to individuals and the wider NHS perhaps negating the need for a secondary care referral. RESULTS: We will conduct a multicentre RCT comparing CSI and HD in combination with CSI alone. Patients aged 18 years and over with a clinical diagnosis of frozen shoulder will be randomized and blinded to receive either CSI and HD in combination, or CSI alone. Feasibility outcomes include the rate of randomization as a proportion of eligible patients and the ability to use routinely collected data for outcome evaluation. This study has involved patients and the public in the trial design, dissemination methods, and how to include groups who are underserved by research. CONCLUSION: We will disseminate findings among musculoskeletal clinicians via the British Orthopaedic Association, the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, the Royal College of Radiologists, and the Royal College of General Practitioners. To ensure wide reach we will communicate findings through our established network of charities and organizations, in addition to preparing dissemination findings in Bangla and Urdu (commonly spoken languages in northeast London). If a full trial is shown to be feasible, we will seek additional National Institute for Health and Care Research funding for a definitive RCT. This definitive study will inform NICE guidelines for the management of frozen shoulder
