    Magnetic and thermodynamic properties of Sr_{2}LaFe_{3}O_{9}

    Using a Dirac-Heisenberg Hamiltonian with biquadratic exchange interactions, we study the effect of iron disproportionation on the magnetic ordering, and describe the first-order magnetic transition occurring in the perovskite Sr_{2}LaFe_{3}O_{9}. Upon fitting the experimental data, we give an estimate of the exchange integrals for the antiferromagntic and ferromagnetic interactions, in agreement with previous works on kindered compounds. Spin-wave theory yields a magnon spectrum with a gapless antiferromagnetic mode together with two gapped ferromagnetic ones.Comment: 8 pages of RevTex, 5 figures (available upon request), submitted to J.     A system for rapid measurement and direct customization of head related impulse responses

    Head-Related Impulse Responses (HRIRs) measurement systems are quite complex and present long acquisition times for an accurate sampling of the full 3D space. Therefore HRIRs customization has become an important research topic. In HRIRs customization some parameters (generally anthropometric measurements) are obtained from new listeners and ad-hoc HRIRs can be retrieved from them. Another way to get new listeners parameters is to measure a subset of the full 3D space HRIRs and extrapolate them in order to obtain a full 3D database. This partial acquisition system, of course, should be rapid and accurate. In this paper we present a system which allows for rapid acquisition and equalization of HRIRs for a subset of the 3D grid. Then a technique to carry out HRIR customization based on the measured HRIRs will be described

    Temperature dependent d-d excitations in manganites probed by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

    We report the observation of temperature dependent electronic excitations in various manganites utilizing resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Mn K-edge. Excitations were observed between 1.5 and 16 eV with temperature dependence found as high as 10 eV. The change in spectral weight between 1.5 and 5 eV was found to be related to the magnetic order and independent of the conductivity. On the basis of LDA+U and Wannier function calculations, this dependence is associated with intersite d-d excitations. Finally, the connection between the RIXS cross-section and the loss function is addressed.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

    X-ray anomalous scattering investigations on the charge order in α′\alpha^\prime-NaV2_2O5_5

    Anomalous x-ray diffraction studies show that the charge ordering in α′\alpha^\prime-NaV2_2O5_5 is of zig-zag type in all vanadium ladders. We have found that there are two models of the stacking of layers along \emph{c-}direction, each of them consisting of 2 degenerated patterns, and that the experimental data is well reproduced if the 2 patterns appears simultaneously. We believe that the low temperature structure contains stacking faults separating regions corresponding to the four possible patterns.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev.     ARMA models with time-dependent coefficients: estimators and applications

    This paper describes a framework for time-dependent modelling of nonstationary signais, based upon autoregressive or ARMA models with time-varying coefficients . Previous works by the author are summarized here : starting front ideas proposed by Rao, Mendel and then Liporace, it is assumed that the coefficients of the model are expressed as linear combinations of known time functions . A class of estimators is described in this text, comprising autoregressive models, moving average models, and also lattice filters, parametrized through reflection coefficients or through Log Area Ratios .     Electron quantum optics : partitioning electrons one by one

    We have realized a quantum optics like Hanbury Brown and Twiss (HBT) experiment by partitioning, on an electronic beam-splitter, single elementary electronic excitations produced one by one by an on-demand emitter. We show that the measurement of the output currents correlations in the HBT geometry provides a direct counting, at the single charge level, of the elementary excitations (electron/hole pairs) generated by the emitter at each cycle. We observe the antibunching of low energy excitations emitted by the source with thermal excitations of the Fermi sea already present in the input leads of the splitter, which suppresses their contribution to the partition noise. This effect is used to probe the energy distribution of the emitted wave-packets.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Magnetic and electronic Co states in layered cobaltate GdBaCo2O5.5-x

    We have performed non-resonant x-ray diffraction, resonant soft and hard x-ray magnetic diffraction, soft x-ray absorption and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements to clarify the electronic and magnetic states of the Co3+ ions in GdBaCo2O5.5. Our data are consistent with a 3+ Py Co HS state at the pyramidal sites and a 3+ Oc Co LS state at the octahedral sites. The structural distortion, with a doubling of the a axis (2ap x 2ap x 2ap cell), shows alternating elongations and contractions of the pyramids and indicates that the metal-insulator transition is associated with orbital order in the t2g orbitals of the 3+ Py Co HS state. This distortion corresponds to an alternating ordering of xz and yz orbitals along the a and c axes for the 3+ Py Co . The orbital ordering and pyramidal distortion lead to deformation of the octahedra, but the 3+ Oc Co LS state does not allow an orbital order to occur for the 3+ Oc Co ions. The soft x-ray magnetic diffraction results indicate that the magnetic moments are aligned in the ab plane but are not parallel to the crystallographic a or b axes. The orbital order and the doubling of the magnetic unit cell along the c axis support a non-collinear magnetic structure. The x-ray magnetic circular dichroism data indicate that there is a large orbital magnetic contribution to the total ordered Co moment
