    The development and validation of an implicit measure based on biospheric values

    Explicit measures of environmental views can be affected by social desirability and cognitive biases. Implicit measures, which should avoid such issues, have previously faced difficulty in establishing balanced and representative stimuli. Recently, measuring environmental views has shifted toward using environmental values, rather than attitudes. Accordingly, this article outlines a novel approach to implicit measures of environmental views using the Implicit Association Task (IAT). Stimuli representing Egoistic and Biospheric value orientations were selected, having positive valence and categorical representation. Across three independent samples (total N = 293), this Environment IAT (a) showed expected positive correlations with explicit measures of environmental values and attitudes, (b) reflected significant differences between environmentalists and non-environmentalists, and (c) was a unique predictor of environmentalist status even after controlling for explicit values and attitudes. Implications of the Environment IAT suggest a new research approach to environmental preferences for predicting behavior, and the automatic formation of attitudes

    Bayesian Methods for Analysis and Adaptive Scheduling of Exoplanet Observations

    We describe work in progress by a collaboration of astronomers and statisticians developing a suite of Bayesian data analysis tools for extrasolar planet (exoplanet) detection, planetary orbit estimation, and adaptive scheduling of observations. Our work addresses analysis of stellar reflex motion data, where a planet is detected by observing the "wobble" of its host star as it responds to the gravitational tug of the orbiting planet. Newtonian mechanics specifies an analytical model for the resulting time series, but it is strongly nonlinear, yielding complex, multimodal likelihood functions; it is even more complex when multiple planets are present. The parameter spaces range in size from few-dimensional to dozens of dimensions, depending on the number of planets in the system, and the type of motion measured (line-of-sight velocity, or position on the sky). Since orbits are periodic, Bayesian generalizations of periodogram methods facilitate the analysis. This relies on the model being linearly separable, enabling partial analytical marginalization, reducing the dimension of the parameter space. Subsequent analysis uses adaptive Markov chain Monte Carlo methods and adaptive importance sampling to perform the integrals required for both inference (planet detection and orbit measurement), and information-maximizing sequential design (for adaptive scheduling of observations).     Old habits die hard:Travel habit formation and decay during an office relocation

    Workers at a pro-environmental charity in the United Kingdom were evaluated 19 months before the organization moved its headquarters to another town, and then evaluated again 1 and 4 weeks after the move. Travel habit (behavioral automaticity) weakened immediately after the move, and this was equal for those who changed travel mode during the relocation and those who did not. In those who changed mode, habit strength for the old mode did not disappear abruptly but rather decayed over the post-move period, whereas habit strength for the new mode grew concurrently. This demonstrates that even when overt behavior changes during a transition event, the underlying behavioral automaticity does not disappear immediately. Rather, there is a period during which habit for the new behavior becomes established and habit for the old behavior decays. Practical implications of these findings are discussed

    High Frequency Concurrent Measurements in Watershed and Impaired Estuary Reveal Coupled DOC and Decoupled Nitrate Dynamics

    Rapid changes in land use, pollution inputs, and climate are altering the quantity, timing and form of materials delivered from watersheds to estuaries. To better characterize these alterations simultaneous measurements of biogeochemical conditions in watersheds and estuaries over a range of times scales are needed. We examined the strength of watershed-estuarine biogeochemical coupling using data of in situ measurements of nitrate, terrestrial dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and chloride collected over a seven-month period in a nitrogen impaired estuary in the northeastern US. The watershed was observed exerting strong control over concentrations of terrestrially derived DOC in the estuary, attributable to relative homogeneity of watershed sources derived from forested land use combined with relatively conservative behavior in estuarine waters. Estuarine nitrate patterns were more complex, suggesting the influence of heterogeneous watershed distribution of non-point and point sources and high reactivity of nitrate in the estuary. Understanding estuarine biogeochemical patterns will be advanced through greater use of simultaneous sub-hourly measurements of inflows, salinity and water quality estuaries and their upstream watersheds

    The endothelial protein C receptor (EPCR) appears to play an important role in Plasmodium falciparum endothelial cell binding in severe malaria (SM). Despite consistent findings of elevated soluble EPCR (sEPCR) in other infectious diseases, field studies to date have provided conflicting data about the role of EPCR in SM. To better define this role, we performed genotyping for the rs867186-G variant, associated with increased sEPCR levels, and measured sEPCR levels in two prospective studies of Ugandan children designed to understand immunologic and genetic factors associated with neurocognitive deficits in SM including 551 SM children, 71 uncomplicated malaria (UM) and 172 healthy community children (CC). The rs867186-GG genotype was more frequent in CC (4.1%) than SM (0.6%, P = 0.002). The rs867186-G variant was associated with increased sEPCR levels and sEPCR was lower in children with SM than CC (P < 0.001). Among SM children, those who had a second SM episode showed a trend toward lower plasma sEPCR both at initial admission and at 6-month follow-up compared to those without repeated SM (P = 0.06 for both). The study findings support a role for sEPCR in severe malaria pathogenesis and emphasize a distinct role of sEPCR in malaria as compared to other infectious diseases

    Epidemiology of ectopic pregnancy at Laquintinie Douala hospital (Cameroon): prevalence survey, clinical profile, therapeutic and transfusion issues

    Background: Pregnancy is a serious pathology of the first trimester of pregnancy and is the leading cause of death. The objective of our work was to determine the hospital prevalence of ectopic pregnancy (EP), to describe the epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic profile given the often-haemorrhagic context at Laquintinie Hospital in Douala.Methods: We carried out a retrospective study over 10 years, from January 1st, 2007 to December 31st, 2016, using the operating theatre registers and the files of patients admitted during this period for ectopic pregnancy in the gynaecology and obstetrics department of the Laquintinie Hospital in Douala.Results: A total of 905 cases of EP for 32,595 deliveries were recorded, for an overall incidence of 2.8%. EP mainly affected the age group of 25 to 35 (60.6%), single people (57.9%) and housewives (46.6%). The risk factors found were similar to those of cervical cancer, namely multiple sexual partners (80.4%), the precocity of sexual intercourse under 18 years (54.1%) and sexually transmitted infections (52.5%). The symptomatic triad (pelvic pain, amenorrhea and metrorrhagia) was found in 46.1% of cases with a respective order of frequency of 96.9%, 77.3% and 63.6% The management was essentially surgical by radical laparotomy (97% of cases). Two of the 07 deaths were due to religious considerations.Conclusions: EP remains a frequent pathology in our environment with a heavy toll of tubal amputations and death
