Profile of Internet Gamblers: Betting on the Future
The commercial casino industry in 2002 provided more jobs, higher wages, and more tax revenues to states and local communities than ever before. At the same time Internet gambling sites operated by offshore companies have seen explosive growth since the introduction of the World Wide Web in 1995 (Rose, 2003). This research developed profiles of current land based casino patrons who have gambled on the Internet, those who have not but are willing to try, and those who have not and would not in the future consider Internet gambling. Two hundred surveys were collected at two Detroit, Michigan casinos, asking questions varying from demographic information to gambling experience, and the willingness to try new things. The conceptual framework for this project was based on Roger\u27s Diffusion of Innovation Theory, and Forsythe and Bailey\u27s Perceived Time Poverty Model. Income, education, marital status, prior Internet purchasing and online banking experiences have a significant impact on past behaviors and future intentions regarding Internet gambling. Hours of Internet usage had more of an impact on behaviors than the issue of accessibility
A Temporal Expert System for Engineering Design Change Workflow
Workflow management, which is concerned with the coordination and control of business processes using information technology, has grown from its origins in document routing to include the automation of process logic in business process engineering. Workflow also has a strong temporal aspect. Activity sequencing, deadlines, routing conditions,and scheduling all involve the element of time. Temporal expert systems, which use knowledge-based constructs to represent and reason about time, can be used to enhance the capabilities of workflow software. This paper presents a temporal expert system workflow component for tracking engineering design changes. We use Allen\u27s theory of temporal intervals in our model to enhance the decision-making, timing, and routing activities in a workflow application. We test the model using information from a real-world engineering design situation and suggest further research opportunitie
Modifiable predictors of ventricular ectopy in the community
Background Premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) predict heart failure and death. Data regarding modifiable risk factors for PVCs are scarce. Methods and Results We studied 1424 Cardiovascular Health Study participants randomly assigned to 24-hour Holter monitoring. Demographics, comorbidities, habits, and echocardiographic measurements were examined as predictors of PVC frequency and, among 845 participants, change in PVC frequency 5 years later. Participants exhibited a median of 0.6 (interquartile range, 0.1-7.1) PVCs per hour. Of the more directly modifiable characteristics and after multivariable adjustment, every SD increase in systolic blood pressure was associated with 9% more PVCs (95% confidence interval [CI], 2%-17%; P=0.01), regularly performing no or low-intensity exercise compared with more physical activity was associated with ≈15% more PVCs (95% CI, 3-25%; P=0.02), and those with a history of smoking exhibited an average of 18% more PVCs (95% CI, 3-36%; P=0.02) than did never smokers. After 5 years, PVC frequency increased from a median of 0.5 (IQR, 0.1-4.7) to 1.2 (IQR, 0.1-13.8) per hour ( P<0.0001). Directly modifiable predictors of 5-year increase in PVCs, described as the odds per each quintile increase in PVCs, included increased diastolic blood pressure (odds ratio per SD increase, 1.16; 95% CI, 1.02-1.31; P=0.02) and a history of smoking (OR, 1.31; 95% CI, 1.02-1.68; P=0.04). Conclusions Enhancing physical activity, smoking cessation, and aggressive control of blood pressure may represent fruitful strategies to mitigate PVC frequency and PVC-associated adverse outcomes
Alcohol consumption and leukocyte telomere length.
The relationship between alcohol consumption and mortality generally exhibits a U-shaped curve. The longevity observed with moderate alcohol consumption may be explained by other confounding factors, and, if such a relationship is present, the mechanism is not well understood. Indeed, the optimal amount of alcohol consumption for health has yet to be determined. Leukocyte telomere length is an emerging quantifiable marker of biological age and health, and a shorter telomere length is a predictor of increased mortality. Because leukocyte telomere length is a quantifiable and objectively measurable biomarker of aging, we sought to identify the amount of alcohol consumption associated with the longest telomere length and least telomere length attrition. Among over 2,000 participants from two distinct cohort studies, we found no pattern of alcohol consumption that was associated with longer telomere length or less telomere length attrition over time. Binge drinking may reduce telomere length. Using telomere length as a marker of age and health, these data fail to demonstrate any benefits of alcohol consumption, even when consumed in moderation
z~2: An Epoch of Disk Assembly
We explore the evolution of the internal gas kinematics of star-forming
galaxies from the peak of cosmic star-formation at to today.
Measurements of galaxy rotation velocity , which quantify ordered
motions, and gas velocity dispersion , which quantify disordered
motions, are adopted from the DEEP2 and SIGMA surveys. This sample covers a
continuous baseline in redshift from to , spanning 10 Gyrs. At
low redshift, nearly all sufficiently massive star-forming galaxies are
rotationally supported (). By , the percentage of
galaxies with rotational support has declined to 50 at low stellar mass
() and 70 at high stellar mass
(). For , the percentage
drops below 35 for all masses. From to now, galaxies exhibit
remarkably smooth kinematic evolution on average. All galaxies tend towards
rotational support with time, and it is reached earlier in higher mass systems.
This is mostly due to an average decline in by a factor of 3 since a
redshift of 2, which is independent of mass. Over the same time period,
increases by a factor of 1.5 for low mass systems, but does not
evolve for high mass systems. These trends in and with
time are at a fixed stellar mass and should not be interpreted as evolutionary
tracks for galaxy populations. When galaxy populations are linked in time with
abundance matching, not only does decline with time as before, but
strongly increases with time for all galaxy masses. This enhances the
evolution in . These results indicate that is a
period of disk assembly, during which the strong rotational support present in

Sequence Profile of the Parallel β Helix in the Pectate Lyase Superfamily
The parallel β helix structure found in the pectatelyasesuperfamily has been analyzed in detail. A comparative analysis of known structures has revealed a unique sequenceprofile, with a strong positional preference for specific amino acids oriented toward the interior of the parallel β helix. Using the unique sequenceprofile, search patterns have been constructed and applied to the sequence databases to identify a subset of proteins that are likely to fold into the parallel β helix. Of the 19 families identified, 39% are known to be carbohydrate-binding proteins, and 50% belong to a broad category of proteins with sequences containing leucine-rich repeats (LRRs). The most striking result is the sequence match between the search pattern and four contiguous segments of internalin A, a surface protein from the bacterial pathogenListeria monocytogenes.A plausible model of the repetitive LRR sequences of internalin A has been constructed and favorable 3D–1D profile scores have been calculated. Moreover, spectroscopic features characteristic of the parallel β helix topology in the pectate lyases are present in the circular dichroic spectrum of internalin A. Altogether, the data support the hypothesis that sequence search patterns can be used to identify proteins, including a subset of LRR proteins, that are likely to fold into the parallel β helix
