Illuminating the World Cup effect : night lights evidence from South Africa
This paper evaluates the economic impact of the $14 billion preparatory investments for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. We use satellite data on night light luminosity at municipality and electoral district level as a proxy for economic development, applying synthetic control methods for estimation. For the average World Cup municipality, we find significantly positive, short-run effects before the tournament, corresponding to a reduction of unemployment by 1.3 percentage points. At the electoral district level, we reveal distinct effect heterogeneity, where especially investments in transport infrastructure are shown to have long-lasting, positive effects, particularly in more rural areas
Organizing for Digital Innovation and Transformation: Bridging Between Organizational Resilience and Innovation Management
Increased digitalization offers today’s organizations novel opportunities to enhance value propositions for customers, but also poses significant challenges for traditional businesses. To navigate through the difficult process of digital transformation in this turbulent environment, organizations need to integrate successful innovation management practices and build organizational resilience. In this paper, we propose a conceptual framework that bridges between these two constructs: We describe innovation management as the continuous activity of anticipating and responding to ongoing trends in an organization’s environment through innovation, whereas we understand organizational resilience as the capability to adapt or transform an organization’s business. By analyzing two illustrative cases, we find indications that a successful digital transformation is not possible without one or the other. Furthermore, we contribute key factors for building organizational resilience and showcase two examples of how to leverage organizational resilience by transforming business models through digital innovation and, thus, avoiding the innovator’s dilemma

Studies of irradiated AMS H35 CMOS detectors for the ATLAS tracker upgrade
Silicon detectors based on the HV-CMOS technology are being investigated as
possible candidate for the outer layers of the ATLAS pixel detector for the
High Luminosity LHC. In this framework the H35Demo ASIC has been produced in
the 350 nm AMS technology (H35). The H35Demo chip has a large area () and includes four different pixel matrices and
three test structures. In this paper the radiation hardness properties, in
particular the evolution of the depletion region with fluence is studied using
edge-TCT on test structures. Measurements on the test structures from chips
with different substrate resistivity are shown for non irradiated and
irradiated devices up to a cumulative fluence of
Resolving Photon Numbers Using Ultra-High-Resolution Timing of a Single Low-Jitter Superconducting Nanowire Detector
Photon-number-resolving (PNR) detectors are a key enabling technology in
photonic quantum information processing. Here, we demonstrate the PNR capacity
of conventional superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors by performing
ultra-high-resolution time-tagging of the detector-generated electrical pulses.
This method provides a viable approach for PNR with high detection efficiency
and a high operational repetition rate. We present the implementation of such a
PNR detector in the telecom C-band and its characterization by measuring the
photon-number statistics of coherent light with tunable intensity.
Additionally, we demonstrate the capabilities of the detection method by
measuring photon-number correlations of non-classical states.Comment: 6 pages, 8 figure
