    Priority-based intersection management with kinodynamic constraints

    We consider the problem of coordinating a collection of robots at an intersection area taking into account dynamical constraints due to actuator limitations. We adopt the coordination space approach, which is standard in multiple robot motion planning. Assuming the priorities between robots are assigned in advance and the existence of a collision-free trajectory respecting those priorities, we propose a provably safe trajectory planner satisfying kinodynamic constraints. The algorithm is shown to run in real time and to return safe (collision-free) trajectories. Simulation results on synthetic data illustrate the benefits of the approach.Comment: to be presented at ECC2014; 6 page

    Back-pressure traffic signal control with unknown routing rates

    The control of a network of signalized intersections is considered. Previous works proposed a feedback control belonging to the family of the so-called back-pressure controls that ensures provably maximum stability given pre-specified routing probabilities. However, this optimal back-pressure controller (BP*) requires routing rates and a measure of the number of vehicles queuing at a node for each possible routing decision. It is an idealistic assumption for our application since vehicles (going straight, turning left/right) are all gathered in the same lane apart from the proximity of the intersection and cameras can only give estimations of the aggregated queue length. In this paper, we present a back-pressure traffic signal controller (BP) that does not require routing rates, it requires only aggregated queue lengths estimation (without direction information) and loop detectors at the stop line for each possible direction. A theoretical result on the Lyapunov drift in heavy load conditions under BP control is provided and tends to indicate that BP should have good stability properties. Simulations confirm this and show that BP stabilizes the queuing network in a significant part of the capacity region.Comment: accepted for presentation at IFAC 2014, 6 pages. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1309.648

The approach relies on a novel tool: a priority graph that encodes the relative order of the robots at the intersection. The overall planning approach can be decomposed into two key components as follows. The entry of robots into the intersection is managed by an intersection controller that assigns priorities. Within the intersection area, robots are controlled by a control law that preserves assigned priorities, avoids collisions, and is robust to unexpected decelerations of some robots occurring randomly

    Decentralized model predictive control for smooth coordination of automated vehicles at intersection

    International audienceWe consider the problem of coordinating a set of automated vehicles at an intersection with no traffic light. The priority-based coordination framework is adopted to separate the problem into a priority assignment problem and a vehicle control problem under fixed priorities. This framework ensures good properties like safety (collision-free trajectories, brake-safe control) and liveness (no gridlock). We propose a decentralized Model Predictive Control (MPC) approach where vehicles solve local optimization problems in parallel, ensuring them to cross the intersection smoothly. The proposed decentralized MPC scheme considers the requirements of efficiency, comfort and fuel economy and ensures the smooth behaviors of vehicles. Moreover, it maintains the system-wide safety property of the priority-based framework. Simulations are performed to illustrate the benefits of our approach

    Simulation of epiretinal prostheses - Evaluation of geometrical factors affecting stimulation thresholds

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>An accurate understanding of the electrical interaction between retinal prostheses and retinal tissue is important to design effective devices. Previous studies have used modelling approaches to simulate electric fields generated by epiretinal prostheses in saline and to simulate retinal ganglion cell (RGC) activation using passive or/and active biophysical models of the retina. These models have limited scope for studying an implanted human retinal prosthesis as they often do not account for real geometry and composition of the prosthesis-retina interface. This interface consists of real dimensions and location of stimulation and ground electrodes that are separated by the retinal tissue and surrounded by physiological fluids.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In this study, we combined the prosthesis-retina interface elements into a framework to evaluate the geometrical factors affecting stimulation thresholds for epiretinal prostheses used in clinical human trials, as described by Balthasar <it>et al</it>. in their Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science (IOVS) paper published in 2008 using the Argus I epiretinal implants. Finite element method (FEM) based computations were used to estimate threshold currents based on a threshold criterion employing a passive electric model of the retina.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Threshold currents and impedances were estimated for different electrode-retina distances. The profiles and the values for thresholds and impedances obtained from our simulation framework are within the range of measured values in the only elaborate published clinical trial until now using Argus I epiretinal implants. An estimation of resolution for the electrodes used in these trials was provided. Our results reiterate the importance of close proximity between electrodes and retina for safe and efficient retinal stimulation.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The validation of our simulation framework being relevant for epiretinal prosthesis research is derived from the good agreement of the computed trends and values of the current study with measurements demonstrated in existing clinical trials on humans (Argus I). The proposed simulation framework could be used to generate the relationship between threshold and impedance for any electrode geometry and consequently be an effective tool for design engineers, surgeons and electrophysiologists.</p

    Yearly Incidence of Stroke and Bleeding in Atrial Fibrillation with Concomitant Hyperthyroidism: A National Discharge Database Study

    Background: Hyperthyroidism is associated with atrial fibrillation (AF), and the latter is a major risk factor for stroke. Aim: We aimed to investigate the yearly incidence of stroke and bleeding in AF patients with and without concomitant hyperthyroidism from the French National Hospital Discharge Database. Methods: Admissions with AF between January 2010 and December 2019 were retrospectively identified and retrieved from the French national database. Incidence rates of ischaemic stroke and bleeding were compared in AF patients with and without concomitant hyperthyroidism. The associations of risk factors with ischaemic stroke were assessed by Cox regression. Results: Overall 2,421,087 AF patients, among whom 32,400 had concomitant hyperthyroidism were included in the study. During the follow-up (mean: 2.0 years, standard deviation SD: 2.2 years), the yearly incidence of ischaemic stroke was noted to be 2.6 (95% confidence interval CI: 2.5–2.8) in AF patients with concomitant hyperthyroidism, and 2.3 (95%CI: 2.3–2.4) in non-thyroid AF patients. Hyperthyroidism was noted as an independent risk factor for ischaemic stroke (adjusted hazard ratio aHR: 1.133, 95%CI: 1.080–1.189) overall, particularly within the first year of hyperthyroidism diagnosis (aHR 1.203, 95%CI 1.120–1.291), however, the association became non-significant in subsequent years (aHR 1.047, 95%CI 0.980–1.118). Major bleeding incidence was lower in the hyperthyroid AF group in comparison to the non-thyroid AF group (incidence ratio: 5.1 vs. 5.4%/year, p < 0.001). The predictive value of CHA(2)DS(2)VASc and HAS-BLED scores for ischaemic stroke and bleeding events, respectively, did not differ significantly between AF patients with or without concomitant hyperthyroidism. Conclusions: Hyperthyroidism seems to be an independent risk factor of ischaemic stroke in AF patients, particularly within the first year of hyperthyroidism diagnosis

    Antimicrobial Susceptibility Profile of Several Bacteria Species Identified in the Peritoneal Exudate of Cows Affected by Parietal Fibrinous Peritonitis after Caesarean Section

    peer reviewedAbstract: The aim of this study was to identify the species and antimicrobial susceptibility of bacteria involved in parietal fibrinous peritonitis (PFP).We studied 156 peritoneal fluid samples from cows presenting PFP after caesarean section. Bacteria were cultured in selective media and their antimicrobial susceptibility was tested by disk diffusion assay. Bacteria were isolated in the majority (129/156; 83%) of samples. The majority (82/129; 63%) of positive samples contained one dominant species, while two or more species were cultured in 47/129 (36%) samples. Trueperella pyogenes (T. Pyogenes) (107 strains) was the most identified species, followed by Escherichia coli (E. coli) (38 strains), Proteus mirabilis (P. mirabilis) (6 strains), and Clostridium perfringens (C. perfringens) (6 strains). Several other species were sporadically identified. Antimicrobial susceptibility was tested in 59/185 strains, predominantly E. coli (38 strains) and P. mirabilis (6 strains). Antibiotic resistance, including resistance to molecules of critical importance, was commonly observed; strains were classified as weakly drug resistant (22/59; 37%), multidrug resistant (24/59; 41%), extensively drug resistant (12/59; 20%), or pan-drug resistant (1/59; 2%). In conclusion, extensive antibiotic resistance in the isolated germs might contribute to treatment failure. Ideally, antimicrobial therapy of PFP should be based upon bacterial culture and susceptibility testing
