Beyond Offsets: Innovative Approaches to Achieving and Exceeding Our Climate Commitments
Climate change is a defining issue of our time, and colleges and university are leading the way by setting ambitious greenhouse gas reduction targets. Many of us are even striving for carbon neutrality under the President’s Climate Commitment. To meet these targets we take measures to reduce our footprints, or do “less bad”. In this situation, we often reach a point where no more reductions are possible, and to meet our targets we need to consider purchasing offsets or renewable energy credits. But instead of spending money in these abstract ways that leave very little room for student interaction, could we focus on doing “more good” – identifying ways we can improve the environment and the community around us? Could we use the money spent on traditional offset programs to support these projects? And, can we somehow quantify these impacts and include them as part of a holistic “less bad and more good” sustainability strategy? These are the questions this workshop will explore. Two thought leaders in this space will give a short presentation on the ways they are thinking beyond offsets, from calculating and flourishing your handprint in addition to reducing your footprint to onsetting instead of offsetting travel emissions to have real impacts in local communities. Then we will spend the remainder of the workshop brainstorming and discussing how we might apply these concepts to rethink our own approaches to offsetting campus emissions. The goal will be to use this as a seed conversation to begin a larger dialogue
UNEP/SETAC life cycle initiative: background, aims and scope
The conclusions about the development of the content of the LC Initiative are the following: A specific niche for the Life Cycle Initiative has developed, compared with the role of SETAC, the International Society of Industrial Ecology (ISIE) and ISO. The aims of the initiative have step by step been extended, by bringing the initiative at a world level, by including both LCI and LCIA, and by including a program on Life Cycle Management (LCM). In the LCM program due attention is to be given to other tools and approaches than quantitative LCA which are relevant for life-cycle thinking in general, and also to the other two dimensions of sustainability, i.e. the social and economic dimensions. A number of important questions regarding the scope of the initiative and the methodological set-up have been in-depth discussed, thus resulting in a clear basis for the technical content of work to come. Three definition studies will now be implemented which will define the work program for the three programs of the initiative; these studies will be finalised by the end of 200
Antitumor activity of the tea polyphenol epigallocatechin-3-gallate encapsulated in targeted vesicles after intravenous administration
The therapeutic potential of epigallocatechin gallate, a green tea polyphenol with anti-cancer properties, is limited by its inability to specifically reach tumors following intravenous administration. The purpose of this study is to determine whether a tumor-targeted vesicular formulation of epigallocatechin gallate would suppress the growth of A431 epidermoid carcinoma and B16-F10 melanoma in vitro and in vivo. Transferrin-bearing vesicles encapsulating epigallocatechin gallate were intravenously administered to mice bearing subcutaneous A431 and B16-F10 tumors. The intravenous administration of epigallocatechin gallate encapsulated in transferrin-bearing vesicles resulted in tumor suppression for 40% of A431 and B16-F10 tumors. Animal survival was improved by more than 20 days compared to controls. Encapsulation of epigallocatechin gallate in transferrin-bearing vesicles is a promising therapeutic strategy
