Observation of wave-packet propagation in the ion cyclotron range of frequencies in a tokamak plasma
Experimental observation of wave-packet propagation in the ion cyclotron range of frequencies in a tokamak plasma is reported. Studies were carried out in the Caltech Research Tokamak [Phys. Fluids 23, 614 (1980)] in a pure hydrogen plasma and in a regime where fast-wave damping was sufficiently small to permit multiple toroidal transits of the wave packet. Waves were launched by exciting a small loop antenna with a short burst of radio-frequency current and were detected with shielded magnetic probes. Probe scans revealed a large increase in wave-packet amplitude at smaller minor radii, and the packet velocity was found to be independent of radial position. Measurement of the packet transit time yielded direct information about the wave group velocity. Packet velocity was investigated as a function of the fundamental excitation frequency, plasma density, and toroidal magnetic field. Results are compared with the predictions of a cold plasma model that includes a vacuum layer at the edge
Experiences with a preliminary NICE/SPAR structural analysis system
Development of a new structural analysis system based on the original SPAR finite element code and the NICE system is described. The system is denoted NICE/SPAR. NICE was designed at Lockheed Palo Alto Research Laboratory and contains data management utilities, a command language interpreter, and a command language definition for integrating engineering computational modules. SPAR is a system of programs used for finite element structural analysis developed for NASA by Engineering Information Systems, Inc. It includes many complementary structural analysis and utility functions which communicate through a common database. The work on NICE/SPAR was motivated by requirements for a highly modular and flexible structural analysis system to use as a tool in carrying out research in computational methods and exploring new computer hardware. Analysis examples are presented which demonstrate the benefits gained from a combination of the NICE command language with the SPAR computational modules
Comment on "Spectroscopic Evidence for Multiple Order Parameter Components in the Heavy Fermion Superconductor CeCoIn"
Recently, Rourke et al. reported point-contact spectroscopy results on the
heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn [1]. They obtained conductance spectra
on the c-axis surfaces of CeCoIn single crystals. Their major claims are
two-fold: CeCoIn has i) d-wave pairing symmetry and ii) two coexisting
order parameter components. In this Comment, we show that these claims are not

Point-contact spectroscopy in heavy-fermion superconductors
We develop a minimal model to calculate point-contact spectra between a
metallic tip and a superconducting heavy-fermion system. We apply our tunneling
model to the heavy fermion CeCoIn5, both in the normal and superconducting
state. In point-contact and scanning tunneling spectroscopy many heavy-fermion
materials, like CeCoIn5, exhibit an asymmetric differential conductance, dI/dV,
combined with a strongly suppressed Andreev reflection signal in the
superconducting state. We argue that both features may be explained in terms of
a multichannel tunneling model in the presence of localized states near the
interface. We find that it is not sufficient to tunnel into two itinerant bands
of light and heavy electrons to explain the Fano line shape of the differential
conductance. Localized states in the bulk or near the interface are an
essential component for quantum interference to occur when an electron tunnels
from the metallic tip of the point contact into the heavy-fermion system.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures. Accepted for publication in Physical Review
c-Axis longitudinal magnetoresistance of the electron-doped superconductor Pr1.85Ce0.15CuO4
We report c-axis resistivity and longitudinal magnetoresistance measurements
of superconducting Pr1.85Ce0.15CuO4 single crystals. In the temperature range
13K<T<32K, a negative magnetoresistance is observed at fields just above Hc2.
Our studies suggest that this negative magnetoresistance is caused by
superconducting fluctuations. At lower temperatures (T<13K), a different
magnetoresistance behavior and a resistivity upturn are observed, whose origin

Preferential mobilization and egress of Type 1 and Type 3 innate lymphocytes in response to exercise and hypoxia
The study examined the effect of exercise and hypoxia on the mobilization and egress of innate lymphocytes (ILCs) and adaptive T cell populations in the blood. The ILCs have emerged as a critical population of cells in immune regulation at mucosal surfaces in animals and humans. Eleven healthy male subjects performed (i) 45 min of exercise at 50% VO2 peak on a cycle ergometer under normoxia and (ii) hypoxia, or (iii) while resting in hypoxia. Blood samples were obtained pre-exercise, immediately post-exercise and 60 min post-exercise and were analyzed by flow cytometry to examine the type 1 and type 3 ILCs and CD4+ and CD8+ naive and memory cell populations. There was a significant increase in the number of type 1 (NK cells) and type 3 ILC22 cells in the blood in response to exercise under normal oxygen conditions followed by a significant egress of these cells following the cessation of exercise. Exercise performed under hypoxic conditions abrogated the mobilization response of NK cells and ILC22 cells. Type 3 LTi cells were mobilized into the blood only under hypoxic rest conditions. No significant changes were observed when we analysed total CD4+ and CD8+T cell populations or the naive and memory subsets.
