    Social and Curricular Inclusion in Refugee Education: Critical Approaches to Education Advocacy

    Recognizing refugee students, families, and communities as a source of knowledge and social change, this article offers two case studies of innovative, deliberative, and labor‐intensive practices toward meaningful social inclusion of refugee parents and students in education. The first example focuses on the multiyear effort by the Parent‐Student‐Resident Organization (PSRO) in San Diego, California, an education advocacy group organized and led by local parents to institutionalize social inclusion programs for refugees and other systemically excluded students. The second example analyzes the Refugee Teaching Institute in Merced, California, organized with the Critical Refugee Studies Collective (CRSC), to work with teachers to create a refugee‐centered curriculum. In both case studies, organizers depart from deficit models of refugee education by foregrounding student and parent empowerment and bringing together diverse stakeholders to generate and implement a shared vision for teaching and learning. Through sharing insights glimpsed from participant observation and extended conversations with participants in each case study, this article shifts the reference point in refugee education from that of school authorities to that of refugees themselves.     Diversifying the Academy: Librarians Coaching Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellows through the Scholarly Research Cycle

    Increasing diversity within the scholarly community is a priority for academic libraries. Often the focus is on diversifying our staff, programs, collections, and services. But the library can also have an important role to play in campus diversity initiatives that focus on equity and inclusion among the student body and professorate. This poster will detail a library coaching program developed as part of a local instance of the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship program, a nationwide initiative to increase faculty diversity by supporting students of color to pursue PhDs and careers as professors. The coaching program pairs librarians with undergraduates in their junior and senior years. Library coaches build a research-focused relationship with students geared toward ongoing empowerment and the development of the research and information literacy skills that students need to be successful. The poster will present the key elements of this successful program including background, setting expectations for coaches, librarian training and development, program assessment, and strategies for engagement with campus stakeholders. The poster will also elaborate on how the program can serve as a model for coaching other student cohorts that would benefit from additional librarian support, such as first-generation students, affinity groups, student athletes, library student workers, or honors students. This poster is relevant to those who perform outreach to student groups and programs and/or are involved in diversity initiatives, as well as all who are interested in alternative teaching and learning programming. Attendees will leave with concrete ideas they can apply at their own institutions

    Patient and health care professional views and experiences of computer agent-supported health care

    Objectives To explore patient and health care professional (HCP) views towards the use of multiagent computer systems in their GP practice. Design Qualitative analysis of in-depth interviews and analysis of transcriptions. Setting Urban health centre in Dundee, Scotland. Participants Five representative healthcare professionals and 11 patients. Main outcome measures Emergent themes from interviews revealed participants' attitudes and beliefs, which were coded and indexed. Results Patients and HCPs had similar beliefs, attitudes and views towards the implementation of multi-agent systems (MAS). Both felt modern communication methods were useful to supplement, not supplant, face-to-face consultations between doctors and patients. This was based on the immense trust these patients placed in their doctors in this practice, which extended to trust in their choice of communication technology and security. Rapid access to medical information increased patients' sense of shared partnership and self-efficacy. Patients and HCPs expressed respect for each other's time and were keen to embrace technology that made interactions more efficient, including for the altruistic benefit of others less technically competent. Conclusions Patients and HCPs welcomed the introduction of agent technology to the delivery of health care. Widespread use will depend more on the trust patients place in their own GP than on technological issues

    Compendium-Wide Analysis of Pseudomonas aeruginosa Core and Accessory Genes Reveals Transcriptional Patterns across Strains PAO1 and PA14.

    Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen that causes difficult-to-treat infections. Two well-studied divergent P. aeruginosa strain types, PAO1 and PA14, have significant genomic heterogeneity, including diverse accessory genes present in only some strains. Genome content comparisons find core genes that are conserved across both PAO1 and PA14 strains and accessory genes that are present in only a subset of PAO1 and PA14 strains. Here, we use recently assembled transcriptome compendia of publicly available P. aeruginosa RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) samples to create two smaller compendia consisting of only strain PAO1 or strain PA14 samples with each aligned to their cognate reference genome. We confirmed strain annotations and identified other samples for inclusion by assessing each sample\u27s median expression of PAO1-only or PA14-only accessory genes. We then compared the patterns of core gene expression in each strain. To do so, we developed a method by which we analyzed genes in terms of which genes showed similar expression patterns across strain types. We found that some core genes had consistent correlated expression patterns across both compendia, while others were less stable in an interstrain comparison. For each accessory gene, we also determined core genes with correlated expression patterns. We found that stable core genes had fewer coexpressed neighbors that were accessory genes. Overall, this approach for analyzing expression patterns across strain types can be extended to other groups of genes, like phage genes, or applied for analyzing patterns beyond groups of strains, such as samples with different traits, to reveal a deeper understanding of regulation

    Explaining the uptake of paediatric guidelines in a Kenyan tertiary hospital--mixed methods research.

    BACKGROUND: Evidence-based standards for management of the seriously sick child have existed for decades, yet their translation in clinical practice is a challenge. The context and organization of institutions are known determinants of successful translation, however, research using adequate methodologies to explain the dynamic nature of these determinants in the quality-of-care improvement process is rarely performed. METHODS: We conducted mixed methods research in a tertiary hospital in a low-income country to explore the uptake of locally adapted paediatric guidelines. The quantitative component was an uncontrolled before and after intervention study that included an exploration of the intervention dose-effect relationship. The qualitative component was an ethnographic research based on the theoretical perspective of participatory action research. Interpretive integration was employed to derive meta-inferences that provided a more complete picture of the overall study results that reflect the complexity and the multifaceted ontology of the phenomenon studied. RESULTS: The improvement in health workers' performance in relation to the intensity of the intervention was not linear and was characterized by improved and occasionally declining performance. Possible root causes of this performance variability included challenges in keeping knowledge and clinical skills updated, inadequate commitment of the staff to continued improvement, limited exposure to positive professional role models, poor teamwork, failure to maintain professional integrity and mal-adaptation to institutional pressures. CONCLUSION: Implementation of best-practices is a complex process that is largely unpredictable, attributed to the complexity of contextual factors operating predominantly at professional and organizational levels. There is no simple solution to implementation of best-practices. Tackling root causes of inadequate knowledge translation in this tertiary care setting will require long-term planning, with emphasis on promotion of professional ethics and values and establishing an organizational framework that enhances positive aspects of professionalism. This study has significant implications for the quality of training in medical institutions and the development of hospital leadership

    Integrating the patient and caregiver voice in the context of pediatric, adolescent, and young adult care: A family-centered approach

    Family-centered care (FCC) is defined as an approach to care coordination founded in collaborative partnerships between healthcare providers, patients and their family caregivers. Amid the enthusiasm for FCC in the pediatric setting, opportunities have been identified to operationalize the engagement of pediatric, adolescent and young adult patients and their caregivers into decision making that translates not only to their healthcare, but also to the context in which care is provided, as well as the research informing their care. At a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center, the Children’s Cancer Hospital was instrumental in designing and implementing patient and family engagement councils to inform institutional policies, guidelines, environment of care and research. The councils include: he Family Advisory Council, the Supportive Care Council, the Young Adult Advisory Council, and the Patient Advisory Council for Teens (imPACT). The development and outcomes of these councils is presented as an exemplar for patient and family engagement that translates to tangible healthcare delivery initiatives

    Evaluation in the field of youth development continues to evolve.  Youth development programs vary significantly in their focus, setting and outcomes.  Community-based programs seeking to create or strengthen their evaluation methods and tools may have difficulty identifying what to measure and how to capture anticipated outcomes.  This article focuses on a youth development program combining service learning and peer education, serving urban adolescents ages 14 to 19.  The purposes of this study are: 1) to illustrate a strategy used to clarify and align core activities, anticipated outcomes and evaluation tools, and 2) to provide an overview of the updated data collection instruments created by the program

    Searching for Planets Orbiting Fomalhaut with JWST/NIRCam

    We report observations with the JWST/NIRCam coronagraph of the Fomalhaut system. This nearby A star hosts a complex debris disk system discovered by the IRAS satellite. Observations in F444W and F356W filters using the round 430R mask achieve a contrast ratio of ~ 4 x 10-7 at 1'' and ~ 4 x 10-8 outside of 3''. These observations reach a sensitivity limit <1 MJup across most of the disk region. Consistent with the hypothesis that Fomalhaut b is not a massive planet but is a dust cloud from a planetesimal collision, we do not detect it in either F356W or F444W (the latter band where a Jovian-sized planet should be bright). We have reliably detected 10 sources in and around Fomalhaut and its debris disk, all but one of which are coincident with Keck or HST sources seen in earlier coronagraphic imaging; we show them to be background objects, including the "Great Dust Cloud" identified in MIRI data. However, one of the objects, located at the edge of the inner dust disk seen in the MIRI images, has no obvious counterpart in imaging at earlier epochs and has a relatively red [F356W]-[F444W]>0.7 mag (Vega) color. Whether this object is a background galaxy, brown dwarf, or a Jovian mass planet in the Fomalhaut system will be determined by an approved Cycle 2 follow-up program. Finally, we set upper limits to any scattered light from the outer ring, placing a weak limit on the dust albedo at F356W and F444W.Comment: 24 pages, 17 figure
