Financial Expertise as an Arms Race
We propose a model in which firms involved in trading securities overinvest in financial expertise. Intermediaries or traders in the model meet and bargain over a financial asset. As in the bargaining model in Dang (2008), counterparties endogenously decide whether to acquire information, and improve their bargaining positions, even though the information creates adverse selection. We add to this setting the concept of "financial expertise" as resources invested to lower the cost of later acquiring information about the value of the asset being traded. These investments are made before the parties know about their role in the bargaining game, as proposer or responder, buyer or seller. A prisoner's dilemma arises because investments to lower information acquisition costs improve bargaining outcomes given the other party's information costs, even though the information has no social benefit. These investments lead to breakdowns in trade, or liquidity crises, in response to random but infrequent increases in asset volatilityFinancial services;over-the-counter markets;financial crisis
Magnetic Properties of Pd_(0.996)Mn_(0.004) Films for High Resolution Thermometry
We have previously reported on the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the magnetic susceptibility of thin Pd_(1−x)Mn_x alloy films. Extensive new measurements on sputtered films show that a commercial quality sputtering process produces a film with the same dependence of Curie temperature on x as previously reported for bulk samples of the same material. These measurements and parameters from the Renormalization Group theory for a Heisenberg ferromagnet, yield an estimate for T_c of 1.16 ± 0.01 K when x − 0.004, consistent with previously reported bulk result

Different canonical formulations of Einstein's theory of gravity
We describe the four most famous versions of the classical canonical
formalism in the Einstein theory of gravity: the Arnovitt-Deser-Misner
formalism, the Faddeev-Popov formalism, the tetrad formalism in the usual form,
and the tetrad formalism in the form best suited for constructing the loop
theory of gravity, which is now being developed. We present the canonical
transformations relating these formalisms. The paper is written mainly for
pedagogical purposes.Comment: LaTeX, 18 pages, some misprints in formulas (131)-(134) are correcte
Cooperative Chiral Order in Copolymers of Chiral and Achiral Units
Polyisocyanates can be synthesized with chiral and achiral pendant groups
distributed randomly along the chains. The overall chiral order, measured by
optical activity, is strongly cooperative and depends sensitively on the
concentration of chiral pendant groups. To explain this cooperative chiral
order theoretically, we map the random copolymer onto the one-dimensional
random-field Ising model. We show that the optical activity as a function of
composition is well-described by the predictions of this theory.Comment: 13 pages, including 3 postscript figures, uses REVTeX 3.0 and

Family violence reporting: supporting the vulnerable or re‑enforcing their vulnerability?
Reporting of family violence in the media is often done in ways that either sensationalise or, alternatively, minimise and trivialise the issue. This article reports on the collection and analysis of reports concerning family violence from five Australian newspapers over a 15‑week period. The research found that reporting varied significantly depending on the ethnicity, gender, age, status and/or religious affiliation of those involved. The analysis uses codes of ethics for reporting as a framework to discuss current examples of reporting about family violence cases and issues in Victoria, Australia. The research identifies opportunities for increasing community understanding of family violence and for supporting those affected through effective and ethical reporting
Facets and Typed Relations as Tools for Reasoning Processes in Information Retrieval
Faceted arrangement of entities and typed relations for representing
different associations between the entities are established tools in knowledge
representation. In this paper, a proposal is being discussed combining both
tools to draw inferences along relational paths. This approach may yield new
benefit for information retrieval processes, especially when modeled for
heterogeneous environments in the Semantic Web. Faceted arrangement can be used
as a se-lection tool for the semantic knowledge modeled within the knowledge
repre-sentation. Typed relations between the entities of different facets can
be used as restrictions for selecting them across the facets
A nilpotent IP polynomial multiple recurrence theorem
We generalize the IP-polynomial Szemer\'edi theorem due to Bergelson and
McCutcheon and the nilpotent Szemer\'edi theorem due to Leibman. Important
tools in our proof include a generalization of Leibman's result that polynomial
mappings into a nilpotent group form a group and a multiparameter version of
the nilpotent Hales-Jewett theorem due to Bergelson and Leibman.Comment: v4: switch to TeXlive 2016 and biblate
Particle phenomenology on noncommutative spacetime
We introduce particle phenomenology on the noncommutative spacetime called
the Groenewold-Moyal plane. The length scale of spcetime noncommutativity is
constrained from the CPT violation measurements in system
and difference of . The system
provides an upper bound on the length scale of spacetime noncommutativity of
the order of , corresponding to a lower energy bound
of the order of . The difference of constrains the noncommutativity length scale to be of the order of
, corresponding to a lower energy bound of the order
of .
We also present the phenomenology of the electromagnetic interaction of
electrons and nucleons at the tree level in the noncommutative spacetime. We
show that the distributions of charge and magnetization of nucleons are
affected by spacetime noncommutativity. The analytic properties of
electromagnetic form factors are also changed and it may give rise to
interesting experimental signals.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures. Published versio
