Weakly coupled quantum spin singlets in BaCrO
Using single crystal inelastic neutron scattering with and without
application of an external magnetic field and powder neutron diffraction, we
have characterized magnetic interactions in BaCrO. Even without
field, we found that there exist three singlet-to-triplet excitation modes in
scattering plane. Our complete analysis shows that the three modes
are due to spatially anisotropic interdimer interactions that are induced by
local distortions of the tetrahedron of oxygens surrounding the Jahn-Teller
active Cr. The strong intradimer coupling of meV
and weak interdimer interactions ( meV) makes
BaCrO a good model system for weakly-coupled quantum spin
dimers
Tree Amplitudes and Two-loop Counterterms in D=11 Supergravity
We compute the tree level 4-particle bosonic scattering amplitudes in D=11
supergravity. By construction, they are part of a linearized supersymmetry-,
coordinate- and 3-form gauge-invariant. While this on-shell invariant is
nonlocal, suitable SUSY-preserving differentiations turn it into a local one
with correct dimension to provide a natural lowest (two-loop) order counterterm
candidate. Its existence shows explicitly that no symmetries protect this
ultimate supergravity from the nonrenormalizability of its lower-dimensional
counterparts.Comment: 14 page
Supersymmetry Constraints on Type IIB Supergravity
Supersymmetry is used to derive conditions on higher derivative terms in the
effective action of type IIB supergravity. Using these conditions, we are able
to prove earlier conjectures that certain modular invariant interactions of
order alpha' **3 relative to the Einstein-Hilbert term are proportional to
eigenfunctions of the Laplace operator on the fundamental domain of SL(2,Z). We
also discuss how these arguments generalize to terms of higher order in alpha',

A possible explanation for the inconsistency between the Giotto grain mass distribution and ground-based observations
Giotto measured the in situ Halley dust grain mass distribution with 2 instruments, Particle Impact Analyzer and Dust Impact Detection System (DIDSY), as well as the total intercepted mass from the deceleration of the spacecraft (Giotto Radio-Science Experiment, GRE). Ground based observations made shortly before encounter have fluxes much higher than would be predicted from Giotto data. It is concluded that Giotto DIDSY and GRE data represent observations of dust originating from a narrow track along the nucleus. They are consistent with ground based data, if assumptions are made about the level of activity along this track. The actual size distribution that should be used for modeling of the whole coma should not include the large mass excess actually observed by Giotto. Extrapolation of the small grain data should be used, since for these grains the velocity dispersion is low and temporal changes at the nucleus would not affect the shape of the mass distribution
Domain wall entropy of the bimodal two-dimensional Ising spin glass
We report calculations of the domain wall entropy for the bimodal
two-dimensional Ising spin glass in the critical ground state. The L * L system
sizes are large with L up to 256. We find that it is possible to fit the
variance of the domain wall entropy to a power function of L. However, the
quality of the data distributions are unsatisfactory with large L > 96.
Consequently, it is not possible to reliably determine the fractal dimension of

Luminescent mercury selenide (HgSe) quantum dots have been synthesised by a phosphine-free method using oleic acid as a capping agent. The modification of experimental conditions such as temperature resulted in particles of various sizes (15–100 nm) and morphologies not previously seen in HgSe, with emission tuneable between 1000 nm and 1350 nm
Checking the transverse Ward-Takahashi relation at one loop order in 4-dimensions
Some time ago Takahashi derived so called {\it transverse} relations relating
Green's functions of different orders to complement the well-known
Ward-Green-Takahashi identities of gauge theories by considering wedge rather
than inner products. These transverse relations have the potential to determine
the full fermion-boson vertex in terms of the renormalization functions of the
fermion propagator. He & Yu have given an indicative proof at one-loop level in
4-dimensions. However, their construct involves the 4th rank Levi-Civita tensor
defined only unambiguously in 4-dimensions exactly where the loop integrals
diverge. Consequently, here we explicitly check the proposed transverse
Ward-Takahashi relation holds at one loop order in -dimensions, with

Parking and the visual perception of space
Using measured data we demonstrate that there is an amazing correspondence
among the statistical properties of spacings between parked cars and the
distances between birds perching on a power line. We show that this observation
is easily explained by the fact that birds and human use the same mechanism of
distance estimation. We give a simple mathematical model of this phenomenon and
prove its validity using measured data
Disability citizenship and independence through mobile technology? A study exploring adoption and use of a mobile technology platform

Abstract: This article explores the use of a mobile technology platform as experienced by people with disability, their significant other and service providers. An interpretive qualitative study design was adopted involving observations and interviews. The data were analysed using the combined lenses of the social approach to disability and the PHAATE model which represents the factors for consideration in service design for assistive technology. The findings suggest that the adoption of the technology by those in the study could be characterised by a typology of users. The implications of the typology are discussed together with the influencing factors that affected social participation and disability citizenship
