The anyon model: an example inspired by string theory

We investigate the enlarged class of open finite strings in (2+1)D(2+1)D space-time. The new dynamical system related to this class is constructed and quantized here. As the result, the energy spectrum of the model is defined by a simple formula S=αnE+cn{\sf S} = \alpha_n{\sf E} + c_n; the spin S{\sf S} is an arbitrary number here but the constants αn\alpha_n and cnc_n are eigenvalues for certain spectral problems in fermionic Fock space Hψ{\bf H}_\psi constructed for the free 2D fermionic field.Comment: 19 pages; to be published in Int. The scalar complex potential and the Aharonov-Bohm effect

The Aharonov-Bohm effect is traditionally attributed to the effect of the electromagnetic 4-potential AA, even in regions where both the electric field E\mathbf{E} and the magnetic field B\mathbf{B} are zero. The AB effect reveals that multiple-valued functions play a crucial role in the description of an electromagnetic field. We argue that the quantity measured by AB experiments is a difference in values of a multiple-valued complex function, which we call a complex potential or {pre-potential. We show that any electromagnetic field can be described by this pre-potential, and give an explicit expression for the electromagnetic field tensor through this potential. The pre-potential is a modification of the two scalar potential functions.Comment: 10 pages 2 figure

Cooperative Chiral Order in Copolymers of Chiral and Achiral Units

Polyisocyanates can be synthesized with chiral and achiral pendant groups distributed randomly along the chains. The overall chiral order, measured by optical activity, is strongly cooperative and depends sensitively on the concentration of chiral pendant groups. To explain this cooperative chiral order theoretically, we map the random copolymer onto the one-dimensional random-field Ising model. We show that the optical activity as a function of composition is well-described by the predictions of this theory.Comment: 13 pages, including 3 postscript figures, uses REVTeX 3.0 and epsf.st

Nonlinear equations for p-adic open, closed, and open-closed strings

We investigate the structure of solutions of boundary value problems for a one-dimensional nonlinear system of pseudodifferential equations describing the dynamics (rolling) of p-adic open, closed, and open-closed strings for a scalar tachyon field using the method of successive approximations. For an open-closed string, we prove that the method converges for odd values of p of the form p=4n+1 under the condition that the solution for the closed string is known. For p=2, we discuss the questions of the existence and the nonexistence of solutions of boundary value problems and indicate the possibility of discontinuous solutions appearing.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figure

Infinite planar string: cusps, braids and soliton exitations

We investigate infinite strings in (2+1)D(2+1)D space-time, which may be considered as excitations of straight lines on the spatial plane. We also propose the hamiltonian description of such objects that differs from the standard hamiltonian description of the string. The hamiltonian variables are separated into two independent groups: the "internal" and "external" variables. The first ones are invariant under space-time transformations and are connected with the second form of the world-sheet. The "external" variables define the embedding of the world-sheet into space-time. The constructed phase space is nontrivial because the finite number of constraints entangles the variables from these groups. First group of the variables constitute the coefficients for the pair of first-order spectral problems; the solution of these problems is necessary for the reconstruction of the string world-sheet. We consider the excitations, which correspond to "N- soliton" solution of the spectral problem, and demonstrate that the reconstructed string has cuspidal points. World lines of such points form braids of various topologies.Comment: 16 pages, 4 figure

Spinor fields without Lorentz frames in curved spacetime using complexified quaternions

Using complexified quaternions, a formalism without Lorentz frames, and therefore also without vierbeins, for dealing with tensor and spinor fields in curved spacetime is presented. A local U(1) gauge symmetry, which, it is speculated, might be related to electromagnetism, emerges naturally.Comment: 14 pages; v2: minor corrections; v3: note added concerning unified treatment of local Lorentz transformations and local U(1) gauge transformations; v4: published in J. Entropy-based measure of structural order in water

We analyze the nature of the structural order established in liquid TIP4P water in the framework provided by the multi-particle correlation expansion of the statistical entropy. Different regimes are mapped onto the phase diagram of the model upon resolving the pair entropy into its translational and orientational components. These parameters are used to quantify the relative amounts of positional and angular order in a given thermodynamic state, thus allowing a structurally unbiased definition of low-density and high-density water. As a result, the structurally anomalous region within which both types of order are simultaneously disrupted by an increase of pressure at constant temperature is clearly identified through extensive molecular-dynamics simulations.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, to appear in Phys. High-resolution spectropolarimetric observations of hot subdwarfs

We report on high-resolution spectropolarimetric observations of the hot subdwarf stars HD 76431 and Feige 66, using the ESPaDOnS echelle spectropolarimeter at CFHT. We compute cross-correlation Stokes I and V line profiles to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio. We then average all available cross-correlation profiles of each star to further decrease the noise level. Although both targets were previously reported to host kilo-gauss magnetic fields, we do not derive any evidence of large-scale photospheric fields from our sets of observations, in spite of tight error bars on the longitudinal field of the order of 60 gauss for HD 76431 and 200 gauss for Feige 66. A new analysis of FORS1 observations of HD 76431, which provided the basis for the original claim of field detection, confirms the absence of any detectable Zeeman signature, with an error bar of about 100 gauss on the longitudinal magnetic field.Comment: Proceedings of the fifth meeting on hot subdwarf stars and related object

Nucleon electromagnetic form factors from lattice QCD using a nearly physical pion mass

    Get PDF
We present lattice QCD calculations of nucleon electromagnetic form factors using pion masses mπm_\pi = 149, 202, and 254 MeV and an action with clover-improved Wilson quarks coupled to smeared gauge fields, as used by the Budapest-Marseille-Wuppertal collaboration. Particular attention is given to removal of the effects of excited state contamination by calculation at three source-sink separations and use of the summation and generalized pencil-of-function methods. The combination of calculation at the nearly physical mass mπm_\pi = 149 MeV in a large spatial volume (mπLsm_\pi L_s = 4.2) and removal of excited state effects yields agreement with experiment for the electric and magnetic form factors GE(Q2)G_E(Q^2) and GM(Q2)G_M(Q^2) up to Q2Q^2 = 0.5 GeV2^2.Comment: v2: published version; 30 pages, 25 figures, 6 table
