Mediation techniques in Couple and Family Therapy: two clinical vignettes

Through the presentation of two clinical vignettes \u2013 one from a couple therapy and another one from a family therapy- therapeutic efficacy of utilizing graphic tasks, like graphic-projective instruments (Anzieu, Chabert, 1997), or free children\u2019s drawings or thematic drawings as well, is discussed. Sometimes, in fact, the creation of metaphors both by patients and therapist helps in representing what is unapproachable at a verbal level - because of anguish surplus at the moment - through an allusive technique. A couple failed three trials of IVF. The holding of the theme of infertility by the therapist allows the couple to mobilize itself towards the external relationships. In a second moment the infertility problems are symbolized by the husband in a very amazing way through a graphic projective instrument (Greco, 2006) in which he traces a sort of \u201cbroken penis\u201d. An insight -although weak- about the meaning of his drawing will lead this man to ask an individual therapeutic work some months later. In a migrant family therapy, the anguishing drawing of the two children about family arrival to Italy allows parents to express their anguish about the recent death of their third son, that obliged them to \u201cfly\u201d away from their country, without any preparation for themselves and for their children

Il figlio adottato e la sua doppia origine

Attraverso la presentazione di due casi clinici \u2013 il primo di una giovane donna adottata nella prima infanzia da una famiglia con adozione nazionale, l\u2019altro di due genitori adottivi chiamati a fare il lutto del distanziamento del figlio adottato ormai giovane adulto \u2013 si sottolinea la persistenza della doppia connessione dell\u2019adottato, da un lato con la famiglia di origine, dall\u2019altro con i nuovi legami adottivi (Brodzinsky, Schechter, Marantz Henig, 1992). Tale doppia connessione permane, anche quando apparentemente uno dei due poli, o entrambi, sembrano \u201cscomparire\u201d dall\u2019esperienza soggettiva e relazionale dell\u2019adottato e della sua famiglia adottiva, per riemergere nel tempo con modalit\ue0 peculiari per ogni soggetto. A livello psichico quindi l\u2019adozione si colloca per tutti i protagonisti in uno spazio >, in cui s\u2019intrecciano in una modalit\ue0 particolare le dimensioni di filiazione psichica, filiazione istituita e filiazione > (Guyotat, 1980; 1995), rispetto alle quali genitori adottivi e figlio venuto da lontano devono fare i conti con un compito di integrazione destinato a durare, con vicende alterne, per tutta la vita

The story of the origins in Italian books for adopted children

The purpose of this qualitative study is to identify the main representations of the process of the international adoption through a comparative analysis of the Italian fairy tales and stories used to talk about their adoption to adopted children, from 4 to 10 years old. The sample of the study includes 50 Italian fairy tales and stories, written since 1995 up to now, that tell the adopted children something about their origin and their adoption. The verbatim of the tales and the stories were analyzed through content analysis, using a computer assisted text analysis program (T-Lab). The main results show the very different images of the various protagonists - adoptive parents, adopted child, birth mother, birth country, \u201cbridge\u201d caregivers (operators of institutes, or houses for children or foster families in the birth country\u2026), social and legal operators both in the birth country and in the adoptive one\u2026 The two moments of the "beginning" of the story and of its "happy ending" result topical, together with the crucial description of the \u201cfirst meeting\u201d and the attribution of responsibility to someone for the child\u2019s abandonment. The representational quality of the narrative productions created by adoptive parents or used with them in the post adoption groups is very important because it is one of the tools that communicate the image of adoption to adopted children. It can vary from a polarized image - all the positive pertains to the adoptive world and all the negative to the world of the origins - or a better integrated image, with positive aspects both in the adoptive and in the birth worlds

Il vissuto del bambino e lo sguardo dei genitori adottivi: la famiglia adottiva come meta famiglia

Figlio adottato e genitori adottivi vivono in uno spazio mentale e relazionale dove la doppia connessione del figlio (Brodzinsky, 1992) - con l\u2019ambiente di arrivo e la famiglia adottiva da un lato, la famiglia e l\u2019ambiente di origine dall\u2019altro- riveste una posizione centrale, anche se diversi da bambino a bambino e da famiglia a famiglia saranno le modalit\ue0 e i tempi di tale riconoscimento. I genitori sono chiamati a rinnovare nel tempo la loro capacit\ue0 di relazione, che richiede di mantenere l\u2019immagine del figlio \u201cdi fronte\u201d, cio\ue8 attribuendogli lo stesso valore e dignit\ue0 che si riserva a se stessi, in quel movimento di danza relazionale, che regola, secondo la suggestiva metafora di Grotevant (Grotevant e al. 2009; 2011), vicinanza e distanza, nelle diverse fasi della vita familiare. Tale paradigma non nega le inevitabili difficolt\ue0 e incomprensioni, oggi poco tollerabili, per il mito contemporaneo delle relazioni familiari come luogo di incontrovertibile vicinanza e immediata reciproca comprensione. Compito centrale per i genitori \ue8 quello di conversare con il figlio della sua origine adottiva, permettendogli nel tempo di compiere il percorso, pi\uf9 o meno tortuoso, che lo porter\ue0 a trovare un punto di equilibrio, prezioso anche se non definitivo, nello scenario meta familiare che l\u2019adozione disegna per tutti i suoi protagonisti
