    Computational modelling of aerodynamic disturbances on spacecraft within a concurrent engineering framework

    This research was motivated by the need to perform an accurate aerodynamic analysis of the drag deorbit device concept under development within the Space Research Centre, Cranfield University. Its purpose is to deorbit satellites from low Earth orbit at the end of the useful lives, in order to help reduce the growing problem of space debris. It has been found that existing spacecraft aerodynamic analysis tools do not adequately support concurrent engineering. Furthermore, use of concurrent engineering in the space industry is currently limited to Phase A (preliminary design studies). To remedy this, the Spacecraft Engineering, Design, and Analysis Tools (SEDAT) Concept has been proposed. Inspired by the approach employed by enterprise applications, it proposes that all the computer tools used on a spacecraft project should be incorporated into one system as separate modules, presented via a single client, and connected to a centralised Relational Database Management System. To demonstrate the concept and assess its potential a SEDAT System and accompanying Free Molecular Flow (FMF) spacecraft aerodynamic analysis module have been developed. The FMF Module is explicitly designed to facilitate concurrent engineering and make use of the maximum variety of Gas-Surface Interaction Models (GSIMs) and their associated data. It also incorporates a new Hybrid method of FMF analysis that combines the Ray-Tracing Panel (RTP) and Test-Particle Monte Carlo (TPMC) methods, enabling it to analyse complex geometries that are subject to surface shielding and multiple molecular reflections. Studies have been performed using a Hybrid version of the Schaaf and Chambre GSIM. One of these studies analysed a drag deorbit device design using a range of accommodation coefficients, including the latest empirically based incidence-dependent coefficients. Based on this analysis, recommendations have been made regarding the material selection and structural design of the device

    Hepatotoxicity induced by greater celandine (Chelidonium majus L.): a review of the literature

    The available literature assessing Chelidonium majus L. (CM) hepatotoxicity potential, and its risk to benefit assessment has been reviewed in this paper. Identification of significant scientific literature was performed via the following research databases: Cochrane Central, Google Scholar, EMBASE, Medline, Science Direct, Scopus, Web of Science, using the following keywords: "Chelidonium majus", "greater celandine", "Hepatotoxicity", "Liver" "Injury", "Toxicity" individually investigated and then again in association. CM named also greater celandine, swallow-wort, or bai-qu-cai (Chinese), has been used for a long time in traditional Chinese medicine and phytotherapy. Its extracts have been claimed to display a wide variety of biological activities: antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, spasmolytic, antineoplastic, hepatoprotective, and analgesic. Moreover, herbal medicine suggests this plant have numerous additional effects which have not yet been scientifically evaluated, such as antitussive, diuretic, and eye-regenerative. However, despite its claimed hepatoprotective effects, several hepatotoxicity cases have been reported to be probably or highly probably connected with CM exposure, after their evaluation through liver-targeted causality assessment methods. CM hepatotoxicity has been defined as a distinct form of herb-induced liver injury (HILI), due to an idiosyncratic reaction of the metabolic type. This evidence has to be considered in relationship with the absence of considerable benefits of CM therapy. Therefore, the risk to benefit ratio of the use of herbal products containing greater celandine can actually be considered as negative

    A case study of zeolitization process: 'Tufo Rosso a Scorie Nere' (Vico Volcano, Italy). Inferences for a general model

    This paper focuses on the authigenic mineralization processes acting on 'Tufo Rosso a Scorie Nere' (TRS), i.e. one of the main pyroclastic units of the Vico stratovolcano (Latium, Italy). The pyroclastic deposits appear in general massive and made of 'black vitreous vesiculated juvenile scoriae', immersed in an ashy matrix lithified after zeolitization processes. The main minerals are chabazite and phillipsite, and the zeolitic content is locally variable, reaching 68 % wt. Zeolites grow replacing both amorphous fraction and pre-existing phases, occurring inside both matrix and scoriae. Concerning scoriae, zeolitization moves from the rim to the core of the scoriaceous fragment as a function of (a) temperature of the fluids and (b) permeability (primary or secondary). Composition of parental fresh glass and that of zeolitized rocks is compatible with trachyte chemistry, lightly undersaturated in SiO2, and the alteration processes modified the parental rock chemical features. Zeolites genesis is ascribed to a 'geoautoclave-like system', and zeolites display a Si/Al ratio similar to that of the parental glasses. TRS presents promising mineralogical characteristics as supplementary cementitious material in the production of mixed cements
