This study aimed to conduct a literature review of the Food and Nutrition Surveillance (FNS) construction process in Brazil. The research was carried out in the first trimester of 2015, using electronic databases whose reliability level is recognized by the academic community, as well as existing records in the libraries of the School of Public Health of Minas Gerais and in the René Rachou Research Center. The descriptors used were: ‘demographic transition’, ‘epidemiological transition’, ‘nutritional transition’, ‘nutrition surveillance’, ‘food and nutrition surveillance system’, combined with ‘Brazil’, in Portuguese, published from January 1978 to March 2015. Out of the 270 works found, only 52 were selected for detailed analysis: 14 of them addressed the “Legal and historical milestones of food surveillance”; 24 focused on “System of Food and Nutrition Surveillance System”; 23 addressed to “Nutritional Deviations”, and 12 discussed “Demographic, Epidemiological and/or Nutritional Transition”. The present review described the process of construction of FNS, taking into account the attempts of deployment of different information systems in some Brazilian states; the strategies used to disseminate and increase the scope of the proposed systems; the difficulties faced by professionals and managers, accompanied by the current drawbacks and challenges for implementation of food surveillance all over Brazil.

Biological aspects of crosses between Triatoma maculata (Erichson, 1848) and Triatoma pseudomaculata Corrêa & Espínola, 1964 (Hemiptera: Reduviidae)

Due to morphological similarities between Triatoma maculata and T. pseudomaculata, which comprise the "maculate complex", both had been regarded as the same species until 1964. Considering that the studies on triatomine hybridization permit hypotheses formulation concerning origin and divergence of species, enabling a quantitative analysis of taxonomic relationships between species, the present investigation was aimed at broadening further understanding related to the capacity of hybrid production by determining the degree of reproductive isolation between T. maculata and T. pseudomaculata. Our results have demonstrated that T. maculata and T. pseudomaculata showed no differences regarding reproduction patterns and they are able to cross, generating infertile hybrids
