Supersymmetric quantum mechanics and the Korteweg-de Vries hierarchy
The connection between supersymmetric quantum mechanics and the Korteweg- de
Vries (KdV) equation is discussed, with particular emphasis on the KdV
conservation laws. It is shown that supersymmetric quantum mechanics aids in
the derivation of the conservation laws, and gives some insight into the Miura
transformation that converts the KdV equation into the modified KdV equation.
The construction of the -function by means of supersymmetric quantum

Summary of the electromagnetic compatibility evaluation of the proposed satellite power system
The effects of the proposed solar power satellite (SPS) operations on electronic equipment and systems by fundamental, harmonic, and intermodulation component emissions from the orbital station; and the fundamental, harmonic, and structural intermodulation emissions from the rectenna site were evaluated. The coupling and affects interactions affecting a wide spectrum of electronic equipment are considered. The primary EMC tasking areas are each discussed separately
Laser velocimeter for simultaneous two-dimensional velocity measurements
Laser velocimeter provides simultaneous orthogonal measurements in manner which minimizes many problems attending prior systems, and allows spatial traversing of flowfield in order to obtain velocity profiles. Velocimeter permits rapid interrogation of unsteady flows where area of interest is of the order of one meter in extent and flow does not vary appreciably over time of about one second
Developing site-specific guidelines for orchard soils based on bioaccessibility – Can it be done?
Horticultural land within the periurban fringe of NZ towns and cities increasingly is being developed for residential subdivision. Recent surveys have shown that concentrations of As, Cd, Cu, Pb, and ΣDDT (sum of DDT and its degradation products DDE and DDD) in such soils can exceed criteria protective of human health.¹ Soil ingestion is a key exposure pathway for non-volatile contaminants in soil. Currently in NZ, site-specific risk assessments and the derivation of soil guidelines protective of human health assume that all of the contaminant present in the soil is available for uptake and absorption by the human gastrointestinal tract. This assumption can overestimate health risks and has implications for the remediation of contaminated sites.² In comparison, the bioavailability of contaminants is considered when estimating exposure via dermal absorption and by ingestion of home-grown produce.³ Dermal absorption factors and plant uptake factors are included in the calculations for estimating exposures via these routes
Arabidopsis TAO1 is a TIR-NB-LRR protein that contributes to disease resistance induced by the Pseudomonas syringae effector AvrB
The type III effector protein encoded by avirulence gene B (AvrB) is delivered into plant cells by pathogenic strains of Pseudomonas syringae. There, it localizes to the plasma membrane and triggers immunity mediated by the Arabidopsis coiled-coil (CC)-nucleotide binding (NB)-leucine-rich repeat (LRR) disease resistance protein RPM1. The sequence unrelated type III effector avirulence protein encoded by avirulence gene Rpm1 (AvrRpm1) also activates RPM1. AvrB contributes to virulence after delivery from P. syringae in leaves of susceptible soybean plants, and AvrRpm1 does the same in Arabidopsis rpm1 plants. Conditional overexpression of AvrB in rpm1 plants results in leaf chlorosis. In a genetic screen for mutants that lack AvrB-dependent chlorosis in an rpm1 background, we isolated TAO1 (target of AvrB operation), which encodes a Toll-IL-1 receptor (TIR)-NB-LRR disease resistance protein. In rpm1 plants, TAO1 function results in the expression of the pathogenesis-related protein 1 (PR-1) gene, suggestive of a defense response. In RPM1 plants, TAO1 contributes to disease resistance in response to Pto (P. syringae pathovars tomato) DC3000(avrB), but not against Pto DC3000(avrRpm1). The tao1–5 mutant allele, a stop mutation in the LRR domain of TAO1, posttranscriptionally suppresses RPM1 accumulation. These data provide evidence of genetically separable disease resistance responses to AvrB and AvrRpm1 in Arabidopsis. AvrB activates both RPM1, a CC-NB-LRR protein, and TAO1, a TIR-NB-LRR protein. These NB-LRR proteins then act additively to generate a full disease resistance response to P. syringae expressing this type III effector
Summary of the 13th IACHEC Meeting
We summarize the outcome of the 13th meeting of the International
Astronomical Consortium for High Energy Calibration (IACHEC), held at Tenuta
dei Ciclamini (Avigliano Umbro, Italy) in April 2018. Fifty-one scientists
directly involved in the calibration of operational and future high-energy
missions gathered during 3.5 days to discuss the current status of the X-ray
payload inter-calibration and possible approaches to improve it. This summary
consists of reports from the various working groups with topics ranging from
the identification and characterization of standard calibration sources,
multi-observatory cross-calibration campaigns, appropriate and new statistical
techniques, calibration of instruments and characterization of background, and
communication and preservation of knowledge and results for the benefit of the
