A comprehensive study of photon interaction features has been made for some alloys containing Pd and Ag content to evaluate its possible use as alternative gamma radiations shielding material. The mass attenuation coefficient (μ/ρ) of the present alloys was measured at various photon energies between 81 keV – 1333 keV utilizing HPGe detector. The measured μ/ρ values were compared to those of theoretical and computational (MCNPX code) results. The results exhibited that the μ/ρ values of the studied alloys are in same line with results of WinXCOM software and MCNPX code results at all energies. Moreover, Pd75/Ag25 alloy sample has the maximum radiation protection efficiency (about 53% at 81 keV) and lowest half value layer, which shows that Pd75/Ag25 has superior gamma radiation shielding performance among the compared other alloys. Estimating the survival benefits gained from providing national cancer genetic services to women with a family history of breast cancer

The aim of this paper is to compare a service offering genetic testing and presymptomatic surveillance to women at increased risk of developing breast cancer with its predecessor of no service at all in terms of survival and quality-adjusted survival (QALYs) by means of a Markov cohort chain simulation model. Genetic assessment and presymptomatic care provided between 0.07-1.61 mean additional life years and 0.05-1.67 mean QALYs over no services. Prophylactic surgery and surveillance extended mean life expectancy by 0.41-1.61 and 0.32-0.99 years, respectively over no services for high-risk women. Model outcomes were sensitive to all the parameters varied in the sensitivity analysis. Providing cancer genetic services increase survival and as long as services do not induce adverse psychological effects they also provide more QALYs. The greatest survival and QALY benefits were found for women with identified mutations. As more cancer genes are identified, the survival and cost-effectiveness of genetic services will improve. Although mastectomy provided most additional life years, when quality of life was accounted for oophorectomy was the optimal strategy. Delayed entry into coordinated genetic services was found to diminish the average survival and QALY gains for a woman utilising these services

Parametric improvement for the ingestion dose module of the European ARGOS and RODOS decision support systems

The European decision support systems ARGOS and RODOS rely on the ECOSYS model for prognoses of ingestion doses. ECOSYS needs an update of various parameter values to provide reliable estimates. This paper reports on some results of a Nordic initiative to derive parameter values that are specific to Nordic conditions, as well as to improve generic parameter values in ECOSYS, taking into account the host of useful measurement data accumulated since ECOSYS was created

Experimental study exploring the interaction of structural and leakage dynamics

Strategies for managing leakage from water distribution systems require the ability to effectively evaluate such real losses through the understanding of the behavior of individual leaks, including their response to changes in pressure regime due to demand or management strategies. This paper presents the results from an innovative experimental investigation aimed at understanding the response of longitudinal slits in pressurized viscoelastic pipes, specifically considering the interaction between the structural and leakage dynamics. For the first time, leakage flow rate, pressure, leak area, and material strain were recorded simultaneously, providing new knowledge of the complex interaction of these factors. The paper shows that strain and area are directly related, hence it is possible to employ strain as a predictor of leak area, calculated using a calibrated viscoelastic model. Using such an approach, the leakage flow rates under a range of quasi-static pressures were accurately predicted and validated. Overall the paper demonstrates that the orifice equation, with a constant coefficient of discharge, is suitable for accurately estimating dynamic leakage flow rates from longitudinal slits, provided that the leak area is suitably incorporated
